Was playing in a comp round with another player we were both at the green I was just on the putting surface 3mts away my fellow competitor was on the putting surface and about 8 mts from the hole ,and he incited that I play first as I was off the green , but I was under the impression that it was the player furtherest from the hole plays first , regardless of ball position.
He said that is only in match play

I believe it was you that needs to go first. In judging nearness to the hole, the green takes precedent :-) (P.s. only 11 posts to go! XD)

I can’t quote the rule number, but the player furthest from the hole is the first to play, this is quite plain and easy to read, the surface has nothing to do with it, neither does the type of competition.

yep, even if one bloke is in the bunker, I have actually had this happen a few times. You can often be closer to the hole than the guy on the green and be in a bunker.

Of course common sense will often prevail, and the guy on the more “complicated” surface will be told to play first because it will take longer to play the hole out if he doesn’t….

TMM, read Rule 10 – Order of Play.

In stroke during play of the hole the player further from the hole plays first, but there is no penalty for playing out of order (10-2)

In match play during play of the hole the player further away plays first,if a player plays out of order there is no penalty but the opponent may recall the stroke, ie tell the player to cancel the stroke and play in the correct order. (10-1)

You guys have scared him off. No answer to your questions & I notice that for someone that was complaining about the 20 posts rule before you can sell , there is not much action on that front either.

There is now pom, looks like he’s emptying his garage! Some good stuff too, might have to go back in for a second look.
