$1000 to spend - what do you buy?

Time for a little hypothetical.

Let say you've been playing golf for a couple of years, and in a moment of inspired drunken gambling you pull the quaddie at the Dapto greyhounds, and $1000 jumps into your kick.

For a mini-second you think of spending it on the missus, or the kids, but then you slap yourself in the side of the head and proclaim "I need a new set of weapons". You are a 10 marker who doesn't mind buying gear off ebay.

How do you get the most bang for your buck - what can you get for $1000 these days. 3 woods, 10 irons and a putter?

(Footnote - my first real set of clubs were a set of Prosimmon Staffs -9 forged muscle back irons and three beautiful persimmon woods - cost me $1170 new in 1984 - I still have every one of them)

3 woods, 10 irons and a putter?

That would depend on which brand you decided to go with. However, you would more than likely not get all of the above for under $1000 (as most half decent 10 iron sets go for around that price).

My advice would be to buy second generation (last season) clubs, as they go much cheaper, but are still very good quality. For example, I just purchased a brand new Nike Titanium 350cc driver for $280, which was more than likely around three times that much when it was first released.

Kind regards,

Ben (Ducky).

Ducky, you are learning.

Itemise what you would buy, and why.

Jack

Glad you asked. This is all of what I am trying to purchase lately:

- Nike Titanium 350cc Driver, Stiff Shaft, 9.5°

- Nike Forged Blades Irons (3-PW), Rifle 6.0 Shafts

- Nike Forged Wedges, Wedge Shafts, 53°, 56°, 60°

I did not want to spend a fortune on buying new golfing equipment. I had searched for several weeks for some good quality products at reasonable prices, but didn't have much luck. I decided instead on a well reviewed and popular brand, that brand obviously being Nike.

Another one of my nit-picky dislikes about much of the golfing equipment that is released now, is the amount of information that is carved/printed on the product. If I buy a product, I will already know it's features. Thus, I don't need to be constantly reminded of it's size, technology, brand, and model. This was another plus for the Nike equipment, as it doesn't get much more simplified than a number and a Nike swoosh logo.

Kind regards,

Ben (Ducky).

Jack,

Driver - TM 360 - $180
3 wood - TM 200 - $150
Eye 2's - best iron ever made - $400
Pair of Cleveland 588's - $200
Putter - Ping Anser - $70

If you were keen you could get a 5 series rather than the 360.

Taylor Made R360XD (120usd?)

Maxli Ezy Drive 19 (99aud)
Adams Peformance Irons 3-Pw (129USD?)
Adams Tom Watson GW/SW/LW (70-80USD?)
Ram Zebra (93aud)

Titleist 975f (75usd)
Adams Peformance Irons 3-Pw (129USD?)
Cleve Wedge (50usd)
Cleve Wedge (50usd)
Ping Putter (50usd)

I'm picking up a set of clones for $799 as a birthday present from my wife. It's about time the 20 year old clubs had a rest.
If I was buying brand names, the set would cost about $3700 new. She loves me lots, but not that much!
I'll let you know how they go.

Hmmm Mau's on the right track with Adams

Adams 410cc Driver $200 Aust Ebay
Maxfli Ezy Drive 16 $80ish Aust Ebay
Maxli Ezy Drive 19 $80ish Aust Ebay
Adams Peformance Irons 3-Pw $240 Aust Ebay
Adams Tom Watson GW/SW/LW $160(max)Aust Ebay
Ping putter $70 Aust Ebay(only item 2nd hand)
TopFlite carry bag $90 Aust Ebay
Srixon AD333 x 2 doz Aust Ebay $70

This hypothetical golfer sounds a bit like me 4 months ago.

i'd stick with the Adams GT363 10° $150
Adams tight lies 15° 3 wood $75
dont use the 5 wood anymore, especially if I had hybrids in the bag.
Hogan CFT h irons 3,4 hybrids and 5-E approx. $600
Feel golf 52,60 wedges $100 (actually probably more now, got my 2 for around $75)
Sniper 2 ball putter $100

Space for an extra wedge or the 5 wood if necessary. Not quite under the budget though.

Exchange rate between AU and US is $1US = $1.4AU, and seemingly on the move the wrong way for us aussies.

sounds like you're in a bit of a pickle.
you should send it my way. id love to spend it for you laugh.gif laugh.gif

Here you go:

Driver: SMT Shinnecock 360cc
Woods: Mizuno MP-001 3 wood
Irons: Mizuno MP-30, 3-PW
Wedges: Cleveland 900 Gunmetal, 52°, 56°, 60°
Putter: Whatever suits you.

Just wanted to clarify some of the initial statement Jack.
You must have got the Dapto Quaddie off track as I don't think there would be that much cashola on track. Or did they give you a cheque ?

Did you hypothetically box the old chestnuts of 1,2,7 and 8 ?

Clubs:
Wilson Whale - brand new $99
Set of old Mizuno blades $400
Wilson 3 wood with red firestick shaft - brand new $80
One of those maxfli ezy drives $99
Any old Ping Anser $60

$250 left to punt up again on the weekend !
(eg. Bulldogs - Brisbane Lions NRL-AFL double $6.75)

Mizuno Black Ox wegdes 52°, 56° and 60° and a Cobra 400SZ in 10.5° with the HM Tour shaft would be my choices. Might just scrape it in using ebay and with a bit of judicious haggling.
Either that or a set of Nike Pro Combos. A 5 h/c friend just got a set recently and they really suit my eye at address. They are also sellling pretty cheap for a premium brand.

keep an eye on ebay by some clubs from usa sell them in aus , eg. some adams fairway woods , some cheap irons etc flog em of for a profit always someone out there who'll buy new stuff, wait until you've doublred your $ and then bhave some fun...

I'd buy $1000 worth of lessons!

wow...are we talking abt 1000pounds?????? 8O

mizunos, nikes, etc etc...
no way can u get all these under a 1000aud (new or even semi-new!)...

either that or I've been keeping an eye out on WAY WAY overpriced junk!!! laugh.gif

Saw these on eBay.com.au

10° Wilson Fireball Driver 450cc $135 (New)

Adams Tight Lies GT 15° $169 (New)

Tommy Armour 845 Hybrid I-Woods 18° & 21° $135 (New)

I would put the money into consolidated revenue. Why waste a grand on new golf clubs when you dont need 'em - thats a female trait. :-)

For further information, send me a PM?

How similar is the Maxfli Ezy drive to the TM Rescue? I may be wrong but didn't TM takeover maxfli, so am assuming they could be almost the same club, but with a different badge.

Budge

- I've hit both and they feel like exactly the same club - there is a better sound with the TM!

there is a better sound with the TM!

really???
I've never been impressed with the sound of the RM, but then again, I've also never had the opp to test it against the other hybrids out there...

I will say this tho...I'm very worried abt the height I seem to be getting with this RM3 of mine... it's flying higher than my irons off the tee... :?

Isnt that the idea of a lower centre of gravity???? :?

yeah, for sure...

but with the way the wind condition is currently at my club, this club is only good for me downwind, coz I'm pretty sure I'll be able to top my 3 iron further into the wind than it is for me to hit a full blooded RM3...

in all seriousness, I seem to have picked up too much height now with the club...
it wasn't really as high as it is atm when I first got it... :

Yep. that's the plan...

I can get the Mizuno wedges for $220 each new and the Cobra driver for about $300 or less from Ebay, so that is less than $1000.
The alternative was the Nike Pro Combos that my friend bought 6 weeks ago from Drummonds Ossie Park for $1000 with a bag! I didn't think that I would like them but after hitting them they really are a nice club.
