$1000 to spend - what do you buy?

Time for a little hypothetical. Let say you've been playing golf for a couple of years, and in a moment of inspired drunken gambling you pull the quaddie at the Dapto greyhounds, and $1000 jumps into your kick. For a mini-second you think of spending it on the missus, or the kids, but then you slap yourself in the side of the head and proclaim "I need a new set of weapons". You are a 10 marker who doesn't mind buying gear off ebay. How do you get the most bang for your buck - what can you get for $1000 these days. 3 woods, 10 irons and a putter? (Footnote - my first real set of clubs were a set of Prosimmon Staffs -9 forged muscle back irons and three beautiful persimmon woods - cost me $1170 new in 1984 - I still have every one of them)

That would depend on which brand you decided to go with. However, you would more than likely not get all of the above for under $1000 (as most half decent 10 iron sets go for around that price). My advice would be to buy second generation (last season) clubs, as they go much cheaper, but are still very good quality. For example, I just purchased a brand new Nike Titanium 350cc driver for $280, which was more than likely around three times that much when it was first released.
Kind regards, Ben (Ducky).

Ducky, you are learning. Itemise what you would buy, and why. Jack

Glad you asked. This is all of what I am trying to purchase lately: - Nike Titanium 350cc Driver, Stiff Shaft, 9.5° - Nike Forged Blades Irons (3-PW), Rifle 6.0 Shafts - Nike Forged Wedges, Wedge Shafts, 53°, 56°, 60° I did not want to spend a fortune on buying new golfing equipment. I had searched for several weeks for some good quality products at reasonable prices, but didn't have much luck. I decided instead on a well reviewed and popular brand, that brand obviously being Nike. Another one of my nit-picky dislikes about much of the golfing equipment that is released now, is the amount of information that is carved/printed on the product. If I buy a product, I will already know it's features. Thus, I don't need to be constantly reminded of it's size, technology, brand, and model. This was another plus for the Nike equipment, as it doesn't get much more simplified than a number and a Nike swoosh logo. Kind regards, Ben (Ducky).

Jack,
Driver - TM 360 - $180 If you were keen you could get a 5 series rather than the 360. JJ

I'm picking up a set of clones for $799 as a birthday present
from my wife. It's about time the 20 year old clubs had a
rest.

Hmmm Mau's on the right track with Adams
Adams 410cc Driver $200 Aust Ebay Total = $990
Personally I've done better on those prices above
recently.

This hypothetical golfer sounds a bit like me 4 months ago.
i'd stick with the Adams GT363 10° $150 Space for an extra wedge or the 5 wood if necessary. Not quite under the budget though. Exchange rate between AU and US is $1US = $1.4AU, and seemingly on the move the wrong way for us aussies.

sounds like you're in a bit of a pickle.

Here you go:
Driver: SMT Shinnecock 360cc

Just wanted to clarify some of the initial statement Jack. Did you hypothetically box the old chestnuts of 1,2,7 and 8 ?
Clubs:
$250 left to punt up again on the weekend !

Mizuno Black Ox wegdes 52°, 56° and 60° and a
Cobra 400SZ in 10.5° with the HM Tour shaft would be my
choices. Might just scrape it in using ebay and with a bit of
judicious haggling.

I would put the money into consolidated revenue. Why waste a grand on new golf clubs when you dont need 'em - thats a female trait. :-)
For further information, send me a PM? |

How similar is the Maxfli Ezy drive to the TM Rescue? I may be wrong but didn't TM takeover maxfli, so am assuming they could be almost the same club, but with a different badge.
|
|
Budge - I've hit both and they feel like exactly the same club - there is a better sound with the TM!
|
|
really???
|
|
Isnt that the idea of a lower centre of gravity???? :?
|
|
yeah, for sure... but with the way the wind condition is currently at my club, this club is only good for me downwind, coz I'm pretty sure I'll be able to top my 3 iron further into the wind than it is for me to hit a full blooded RM3...
in all seriousness, I seem to have picked up too much height now
with the club...
|
|
Yep. that's the plan...
|
|
I can get the Mizuno wedges for $220 each new and the Cobra
driver for about $300 or less from Ebay, so that is less than
$1000.
