New Irons / Fitting?

Hey

I have just gotten back into golf after a couple of years break. I am definitely a beginner and playing around 2 – 3 times per week. I am beginning lessons as of next week however I find my current clubs (Wilson Powersoles) to be uncomfortable and a little unforgiving.

I have been looking at purchasing a set of irons from the US and having them shipped over. My aim is to slowly build a set for my bag, ie irons, then slowly driver and fairway woods. I have noticed the Taylor made R7 Draw irons are quite cheap now. However as these models are obsolete I am finding it difficult to find a retailer who has a demo set I can try. Even more importantly the golfsmith website does not allow custom fitting of this particular club. I am 6ft tall and after going through the golfsmith online fitting guide it says I need 1.5 inches off the shaft length and a lie adjustment. I am unsure if it is possible to have the lie angle adjusted all that much by a fitter after I have purchased a set of standard clubs.

I will be talking to my teacher bout this on monday, but I thought I would get some opinions from this site. How should I go about buying clubs online as well as recieving club fitting? does this mean I will be limited to buying clubs which are “the latest” and thus more expensive?

Obviously my swing is going to change over the coming months making it harder for me to choose a set which will be most suitable…..

Firstly. 1.5” short for a 6’ tall person is a lot off the length unless you have some gorilla, knuckle dragging, long arms thing going. Are you sure this is correct?
Any pro/fitter worth his salt will be able to adjust your loft & lies once you have the irons. No issue there.
I would suggest buying a set of irons that you have at least seen/hit in the flesh unless you already know your specs. You don’t need to hit the whole set, a six iron should do it.

I am over 6ft tall (6’2”) and I use standard clubs. I guess you have long arms for -1.5”.

I say get a fitted set if it bothers you. Either that, or wait until your swing settles (and your wallet fattens) and then get the right setup. If the Wilsons are that bad, get an interim set that (hopefully) will have a decent enough resale value so you can offload them in 12 months or so and spend some dollars on a fully fitted set.

Disclaimer: I generally talk out of my ass.

Forget about online fitting for your first fitting, go to a good clubfitter and get the specs off them. As the others have mentioned 6’ and -1.5” sounds extreme, I’m 6’ and my sticks are +1” (short arms).

And you will have a hard time getting obsolete clubs fitted at purchase, you’ll have to buy the clubs then get them adjusted meaning if you buy online then it will cost you more to get them fitted. If you buy local then they might alter them for nothing or for a reduced cost.

Gte standard length irons then go see a pro for a lesson. They can alter length / lie easily after purchase.
