Advice needed

Hi all, Stumbled across this site while doing some research and I must say I’m impressed and I figured I would ask for some advice. I’ve been playing for about 6 months now and I’ve deiced to buy myself a half decent set of clubs. Problem is I’ve narrowed it down to a final 3 sets and I can’t decide which way to go. I’ve tested them all out and they all feel so damn nice.
I don’t have a handicap, but from what me and my playing buddies can figure it would be around the 20 mark; give or take. I hit the ball ok, I’m still taking lessons though. I would really just like a nice set of irons that I can grow with. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Callaway X20. Price on the high side but you will never go wrong with Callaway. Also you will get a better resale value as well, compared to the Nike. This I think is very important as 2 – 3 years down the road, we will be itching to change our equipment as we all believe that we have our improved to the next level…...

X20 irons are great and sooo forgiving. then you need to think about a driver, fairway woods and/or hybrids, wedges and a putter which if you are like me (similar handicap) could well be different brands. Go and try out as many different brands as you can without getting too confused then buy the whole set from the US via internet. There are plenty of threads here to tell you who is reputable. You may need to split it into 2 deliveries of less than $1000 so as to avoid GST coming in but need to balance this against the delivery charges.

I was faced with the same dilemma when i was choosing between callaway x16 and nike slingshots. I eventually went with callaway x16 and found them to be exceptional. However the nike slingshots and for that matter the big bertha irons are easier to hit, probably cos of their wider sole. Anyways feedback is x18 are much improved over x16 and x20 even moreso they are the ducks nuts.

I have X20’s and love them…..but regardless of how many people recommend them there is no substitute for trying a few brands yourself and being honestly critical with yourself while doing it. Try all the different types of shots that you think you would use etc, and while you are doing that ignore what everyone else says about them….you will be playing with them and paying for them so you need to be comfortable with them. Importantly, do not relate them to some Pro player who happens to use them…they are a damned sight better than you are at the moment and they can probably play with anything anyway. Sorry if that sounds patronising, it’s not meant that way but it’s pretty common to see it happen.

When I was previously looking for new irons someone on here reckoned that if you couldn’t hit Callaway X-? you couldn’t hit anything! I bought X-18’s and they were great, but have admittedly since sold them.

Thanks for all the replies guys, they were helpful. I ended up going the X-20’s in 5-SW, with a 3 & 4 X hybrid and the 3 and 5 X woods. I’m thinking I might replace the wedges with some of the X forged in the future but pretty happy for now! Thanks again.

Just go and buy a gap to match the set and get a X forged lob wedge. Dont replace what you got.

Lots of X20 iron fans here, including myself. But a word of caution, get the lie angles checked if you were not fitted. The X20’s seem to be about 3 degrees more upright than previous models
