what is your handicap?

how far do you hit your driver?

is cost an issue for you?

mate i don’t mind the optima ts’s. about $40 a dozen (at the proshop). or you could try out a heap of AA recycled balls. i’m lucky that i have a supplier near me who sells mint pro v’s for $2 a ball!

I agree with Dwayne. The first question is how good a golfer are you.

What do you play off?

i dont really have a handicap yet.. but its around 20..
about 185m off tee..
no cost isnt an issue because i want to get good balls for a good price..

Go to Rebel and get a Vision sampler pack you get to try the whole range and see if you like them and if they perform how you want.

At 185 off the tee your not really putting enough force behind the ball to get any spin to be honest, assuming using your drive as a guide you would be hitting a full sand wedge around the 60-70m mark.

Right now, I would stick to a cheapish 3 peice like the Top Flite Gamer, which I use in practice rounds, until you are driving 250+ and have your swing speed up high enough to get some spin with your shorter irons. They go for around 30-35 a box, great value really for a 3 peice.

It’s very hard to find the combo you like, most balls that spin a lot wear quickly because they are very soft.

In the mean time, work on your swing and ball striking. It’s a great feeling to see it rip back with a flushed wedge, but backspin is not the be all and end all of golf.

I have tried quite a few balls lately, all soft 2 pieces including Callaway Warbird, Titleist DT solo, Precept Laddie varieties, and a few others.

I found the Precept to actually have the best trajectory for me. Soft enough feel off the face. Not a huge spinner obviously, but i think that would be ideal for you, and the price is great.

Hey Sarg,

I will have to start sending you a cheque! hahahha

I am a high handicapper and have been going through the same exercise as you, so will put in my 2 cents worth for what has worked for me. Off the tee my best distance is about 210 – 220m and on full short iron and wedge shots tend to shred soft balls. If 3 piece balls appeal to you then ones that I found have worked for me are
Srixon trispeed. The really soft feel takes a bit to get used to, but distance is great, shots into the green and putts predictable. Not a drop and stop unless a full shot. Designed for slower swing speeds and do not cut up. about $40.00 / dozen.

Agree with sarg, go get a sample pack of vision balls. I tried the Xpert2 and loved it, great feel (and sound) when you flush one, great distance, also predictable on approach shots and probably the best ball I’ve used for putting.
I thing for its price, exceptional value for money.

I prefere the free ones that I find in hazards.

I just think the UV is a good ball especially at my level which JR sounds like his at…. well around 20 is better than me but we’ll soon have the same clubs so that about the only thing in common plus driving distance i get about 180 on the roll.

Plus australian company who supports these forums well at the very least a reason to try a sample pack :-)

Seriously…Having an Aussie bloke having a crack is awesome. The best thing is that your feedback halps Boz and Co make the next ball even better. The more the ball is played and the more that we all feedback info to him, the better the ball we get.

Boz has invested a lot of coin into this market, and as a group, we can help him make a crust, and improve our game as we go.

Have a go at the Vision UV…Yes, it’s yellow, but it might just save you a couple of shots when you find it so easily!!!

I was up visiting the in laws about an hour away from our house, and the girls decided to go shopping, long stury short, i went with them and went to Rebel for a look and ended up walking out with a X-pert2 6 pack and a free bag worth of goodies…..

Have a go at these balls mate, as Megawatty says great feel and awesome to putt with.

Thanks! :-)

Bridgestone make some great balls give the e5+ and e6+ a go, they are very durable… if cost is a factor they have the older model e5 on sale at “on course” for $25 a dozen… bargain.

Topflite d2s are a good alround ball. Callaway HX-hot very good alround ball too.

Dan

if your a mid handicapper that wants extra yardage but a ball that stops ok…the Callaway hx hot is a great great ball…did I say great

It was rated the number 1 ball for overall performance by british magazine Todays golfer (unlike stupid golf digest hot list) they actually rate gear properly

its stops ok and goes a mile doesnt feel like a rock either

For what its worth if you play the Cally Hots try the HX Hot “Bite”, as long as the regular Hot but better at stopping.
One draw back is the cover, any “spin milled” etc wedges will rip ‘em up after a couple of holes

I have always used Prov1x or HX Tour balls. I play off 11 ATM and iv liked these balls. 2day i got a few Wilson soft nx2 or something. They were only cheap (a 1 for 1 ball, unlike provs that are 2 for 1). The ball was good. Great off clubs and nice off putter and wedges. Very suprising to find a cheap ball that worked well.

hmmmm…. balls.
