Saw an advertisment for a set of clubs, saw that it said 4iron-AW?
probably a yank abomination like “fairway metal….” (last time I looked my irons weren’t made out of iron) most likely means approach wedge.

so is it possible to use it as a sand wedge?
A-Wedge is a gap wedge between PW and SW – u will find it a bit strong lofted to use like a regular SW
an A wedge is usually a gap wedge (around 52 degrees) usually with a low bounce between the pitching wedge (around 48 deg) and sand wedge (56 deg), as apposed a lob (60 deg) which is the other side of the sand wedge I say usually because there seems to be a little more variation in what people think of when you talk about a gap or alternate wedge you can get A wedges with the bounce required to make them a viable sand wedge option

like I said, an approach wedge. or it could be the one before the “b” wedge, that comes before the “c” wedge that comes before….well you get the idea. some consistency would be nice, arrogant b’stards these club manufacturers…

I hate it when my wedge is a “C”

attack it is as i know
Srixon i-701 Tour irons are HERE!!!!! |

In the callaway X-20’s the AW is 50deg and between the PW 45 and SW 55. I use it more than any club other than my driver and putter.
Now that’s even more corny than I imagined….I thought I was being a smartass with my approach comment….

Yea from memory they are called attack wedges.

Whats all this wedge talk? When I started playing it was a pitching wedge and sand wedge…simple! Tell me, what deg would the average pw and sw be? I keep an old low profile PW in my bag as it gets such great height it gets me out of trouble, which I am often in. Are all standard wedges the same? Why would I need an AW or LW? Do I have to go shopping again?

I carry a PW (48deg) 52deg, 56deg, 60deg and 64deg wedges in my bag most days. Sometimes I leave one out, depends on the course. Either th 52 or 56…

wish I saw this topic earlier…..an A-Wedge is a wedge for A-Holes. Sort of lost its glow being this far down the replies list :)

LOL no, it still glows for me! Does anyone know how to acurately measure the loft of a wedge? I’d like to know how my old wedge (bought new in about 1983) compares to my recent purchase…

You need a loft machine to check the loft. See a pro, they should have one.

The gap/attack/approach wedge i am thinking of is 49 deg.

Auxiliary/Approach/Attack / or just A Wedge :)
