Titleist golf ball advice

I recently won the Saturday comp at my home club and received a voucher for the pro shop. I currently use the Optima TS golf ball as I do prefer the softer feel.

I’ve recently been told that these are very old technology (that’s probably why they’re cheap) and my club’s pro shop sells Titleist golf balls, so, I wish to spend my voucher on a box of new balls.

My question is, which Titleist ball should I buy? Given that my handicap is 23 (and falling), I prefer the softer feel, and I’ve been told the 3 piece is better than the 2 piece. I’ve had a look at the Titleist website and like the idea of the NXT Tour, what do you think?

Just trust it!

Hi P,

You won the comp and you want to change ball?

Don’t believe everything you are told about what is new
and what isn’t.

Normal NXT would be the right ball to start with as it will be
straighter, or I would try the new DT Carry or Pinnacle Platinum
Feel.

Cheers,
Boz.

PS Always remember one thing, consistancy leads to better
scores. Find a ball that works for your current game and
try and stick to it.

The harder I practice the luckier I get. Gary Player.

Time to change!

Congrats on the win Piesfan,
I have been using a 3 piece ball for ages, (Pro Vs) but recently changed to the NXT extreme which I’ve found to be more acuarte and longer off the tee and better match my swing speed, they still have a soft feel but are not quite as nippy on aproach shots and chip shots as a 3 piece ball.
Next time I win a voucher I’m also going to try the NXT tour. They look like a good compromise between distance, control and wear.

Go the Blues!

I love having somewhere to talk about this shit!

Thanks for the advice Robbo, and the blues reference. Let’s see how you guys go against Geelong this week. (But we can’t beat you guys? Go figure!)

Just trust it!

Well done on your win, I am quite familar with the Titleist range and the advice you have been given by your pro is correct ie the Optima TS is old technology – typically guys that have played this ball for years really enjoy the Nxt Tour, however there are a couple of things you should consider -

1. if your driver distance is less than 180m you should look at one of the DT balls either DT Carry if you need more launch or DT Roll if launch is not a problem – these balls are both suited to slower swing speed players but are both soft around the greens

2. NXT Extreme will spin less than NXT Tour which provides the benefits of longer distance and straighter flight but you will sacrifice a little around the greens – if you need to hit it straight to score better this ball is for you, if you need some extra spin around the green to improve your scoring go with the NXT Tour

Cheers
Dwayne

Dwayne,

The Optima TS has been updated 4/5 times I believe to date.

There is a brand new version on the market right now TS Plus+
which has current 2 piece technology.

The ex MD of PGF used to run our golf club production,
Des Turner and he had a few stories to tell in regards to
misleading stories being spread at times by other companies
in relation to the Optima balls.

Time to change!

I was using Noodles but whilst doing the Fantom trial Boz inspired me to try a few other balls and found an old xmas present dozen of Optima TS in the garage. Since I started using them I have shaved 4 strokes off my handicap in a few weeks. I get 230m off the tee, without too much slice and I comfortably hold the greens with all my irons. My putting is still crap but that has nothing to do with the ball. I can get about 45 holes per ball and since it is going straight I haven’t lost any.
Now you have me worried and I need help, are the Optima TS balls finished ? I looked at ebay and found nothing other than practice balls.
What advantages other than supply do the TS Plus+ and the NXT extreme have ?

ps Back since the communists at the AFL nobbled free enterprise and knee-capped the mighty blues I have been saying we will recover and get back-to-back premierships for 2010-11.

Mouldy,

I’m too biased to help on this one, maybe Dwayne can fill in the info.

from what you have described either NXT extreme or Tour would be good for you as I said earlier extreme a little longer, straighter and less spin than Tour which will give you more spin around the greens, not sure what the new TS+ offers or the Fantom’s, my advice test a few out you know enough about your game to know what you are looking for – interested to hear about your findings

Alright I will say it!! Have a look at the Boz’s , Vision Range. Sounds like the UV or Artic White would be for you.
Those Fantoms ( see the thread) are also a real option!

Yes I have heard that story also, proof is in the pudding I guess the consumer tries and then buys what works best for them

Dwayne,

I’m not sure if you referring to me, however, I did try a couple of golf balls over the weekend. I used a new Optima TS+, and a Titleist NXT Tour ball.

I found that there was not much difference between the old and the new Optima. It felt the same, and even after speaking to the guy in the shop, who did say that even though Optima have brought out the new Optima , it is still a two piece, with a “target ” mark on the ball, to promote it’s new brand.

I also purchased a three-pack of the Titleist NXT Tour, just in case I lost one (I didn’t). I was a little reluctant to change balls in the past, but, I now think I will. The technology in these balls are newer, and, I actually hit some shots with back-spin, I don’t recall ever doing that, ever! I reckon I was longer off the tee and the control with my chip shots was still there. But I was especially surprised with the way it stuck on the greens.

So, there you have it. I’m positive now that I will spend my voucher on a new box of Titleist NXT Tours. Thanks to all for their advice.

I wouldn’t recommend the DT Carry for anything other than practice rounds. I bought a box to try as I have a pretty low ball flight and hated them, they do carry a lot more but they are absolutely impossible to stop on a green with a wedge shot in, you literally have to hit to the front of the green and watch it roll up otherwise you are off the back.

Personally I have just switched to Pro V’s (refinished) and they are awesome, although more suited to low handicappers. Ton’s of spin though and great distance.

Piesfan

good feedback, consumer trial is always the best feedback for golf ball manufacturers
