This will be my first Melbourne winter playing golf (and if the last couple of days are any indication, it’s going to be a pretty chilly one), so I’m wondering what suggestions people have for winter wear—I really don’t like swinging a club when I’m wearing a sweater, but I like freezing even less. How do you keep warm on the course?
I know my handicap... it's my driving, my long irons, my short game and my putting. |

Hip flask of rum and a good thermal vest under the shirt with a light weight woolen jumper. Warm as toast inside and out. Isn’t it winter in Melbourne all the time.
The key to success is to learn to do something right, then do it right every time. Oh I wish..... |

On the winter mornings I start off using a golf glove on each hand. A beanie that isn’t big and cumbersome. I prefer a nice warm undershirt and a thin non restrictive jumper to a big warm jumper. Kneehigh footy socks and long pants. Thats the best way in my opinion to be warm on the course and not effect the swing.

Polar fleece wind breaker jacket is the go, its pretty thin so you can still swing. Add to that a thermal underwear long sleeve top and you should be right. Plus get a woolen gloves thing to put on your buggy. Put your hands in it while you wheel your buggy.

No wonder Mr. C is nearly on 1500 posts lol As for winter woolies, I’m going to get some sort of sleeveless windbreaker for this weekend

get some Under Armour or a Skins outfit, the heat variety, they do make different garments for retaining heat and regulating body temps. In sydney I play with cycling arm warmers, a short sleeve polo shirt and sometimes a vest. When I warm up the arm warmers come off. They are basically lycra “socks” for your arms with elastic cuffs. Does anyone feel they lose distance and carry int he cold. Heavy air = more resistance I guess and perhaps your body would be less flexi if cold….
who needs driver when a 3 wood will do??? |

I have a mate that swears by Skins and I was kind of looking in that direction, but they are pretty pricey. Footy socks sounds like a good idea—I hate having cold toes. niceshot: I’ve never seen a glove-type thing that attaches to a buggy before. Where can I get a look at one?

... by living in North Qld. When I used to live in the emerald city on those cold winter days at Royal Long Reef I’d use me wet weather gear to stop the wind blowing straight through me. Comfortable ‘cause designed for golfers. T-shirt and sleeveless vest underneath. In Melbourne, double up the t-shirt!

Try Canberra, minus six, frozen fairways, ice covered greens up to the fifteenth on some days, thick socks, long pants, wool vest over a t-shirt and a lightweight rain jacket with removal sleeves, maybe a beenie but I have never used one, just my cap. Oh yeah, carry your bag, that always helps too. ;-) All I am saying is don’t get too carried away, there’s nothing worse than getting to the sixth and you are cooking because the sun is out and all of a sudden it’s way to hot. You can take off outer layers, but you have trouble removing long underwear etc….

No need to rub it in. :)
I understand that’s where Skins, etc are better than straight thermals – they’re designed to help regulate body temperature, not just keep you warm. (Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.) A couple of guys at my cricket club wear long sleeve Skins playing cricket during the summer and reckon they don’t get too hot. After reading what people have written here and doing a bit of research online, I think that’s the way I’ll go… I think staying warm will outweigh the initial expense.

if you are considering skins, go tot eh next level and check out the new Adidas Power web for golf…. our olympians will be wearing power web clothing its got rubber stick on patches that act like an exomuscular thing… tuck in your tummy give you good posture etc as well as being like skins… ther was a review on golfwrx.com of the long shirt… similar price range and surely good to cut 5 off the h/cap… hahahaha

I was recently looking for an undershirt to wear under a polo, tried on a “skin” but at $100 it wasn’t worth it. Went to a couple of other shops and bought a cotton long sleeve cotton tee. 2 for $30 Bought it 2 sizes smaller than I would normally wear. wanted it really firm and ensure the cuffs didn’t hang too low. I hate a loose fitting sleeve around my wrist when I am swinging. Tried it last weekend at a 6am tee off and it worked perfectly
