Advice on set make up

Hi All
I’m after some advice on completing my set. I play off 19 and this is what I using:
R7 draw driver – 200-220m
R7 5 wood – 180-200m
Burner 3 Hybrid -180m
R7 draw irons 4 – 165m
5 – 155m
6 – 145m
7 – 135m
8 – 125m
9 – 110m
PW – 95m
SW – 50m
Precept 60* LW – 20m
My short game isn’t too bad (inside 50m). I wondering if I’m better off getting a 3 wood or another wedge to go between the PW and SW.Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Depends on the course you play I would think, although I am no expert.

If you put a gap wedge say 50/52 degrees assuming you PW is 47/48 and SW is 54/56 or so you have the short game covered and can take full swings for everything from 100 down to 50m but if you play on a course with lengthy par 4’s or long par 3’s you may consider sticking you what you got and adding a 3 wood.

Also depends on your driver accuracy and whether a 3 wood is more accurate than your driver.

who needs driver when a 3 wood will do???

agree with sidman. depends on alot of different things. whatever u think you would use more is what i would buy. on my course i need 4 wedges as it is short and all but 1 of my approach shots are under 100m but on a long course where you might be over 100m away on all pars u really wouldnt need another wedge.

R7 draw driver – 200-220m
R7 5 wood – 180-200m

I’d get a wedge….there is no room for a 3 wood in the distance figures you posted, unless you want a 3 wood for accuracy off a tee.

We have a couple of long par 4’s but the 3’s are average. Driver accuracy is probably 60-70%. I probably should have said that I have only had these clubs for 4 mths. I initially didn’t get the 3 wood because I rarely used my old one, only when confidence was down with the driver. I hit my old driver 190-200, 3 wood 180-190 and 5 wood 170-180. So really not sure if it’s worth the money for a 3w to slot in around 190-210?

Given that I would say forget the 3 wood and invest in 4 wedges that are the same make i.e. a full set of clevelands, vokeys, Bridgestones (my personal fave!) or mizunos or TM (to match your set) and if you miss a green you can select the right one to put you next to the pin and get up and down.

a quality 3 wood will set you back between 150 to 300 hundred as would 2 or 3 matching wedges.

also off 19 how is your putting? would adding a confident putter to the bag help?

who needs driver when a 3 wood will do???

Puttings not bad, ave. about 30, use an old Greg Norman signature. My biggest problem is accuracy from 130-180, very rarely hit the green, I suppose that’s why the short game isn’t too bad, I get plenty of practice.

Yea your biggest gaps are in your shortest irons (PW to SW is 45m). I would invest in a gap wedge instead. I would also get the lofts checked on your SW and 60deg as at the moment I generate similar distances from D1-PW but my SW goes 70m and my 60deg goes 60m. Of course it could just be individual differences, but at a full swing I would want more than 20m off a LW (as you can simply pitch it that far).

I don’t really give the 60 a full swing ‘cause I’m too inconsistent with it. I use it for little flop shots around the green (hence the 20m). Maybe I should pracice with it a bit more!
The TM website says PW 44
and SW 54, my LW has 60 marked on it.
The R7 GW is 49*.

Yea I thought that might be the case. Now that I know that, I would bridge the gap between the PW and SW as 10degrees is a big difference, especially when you get to the nitty gritty of the short game. Sounds to me like a GW is your best bet. Plus chances are being off 19 (and I am in the same boat) that you won’t hit that many greens with a 3w so hitting a 5w and then chipping tends to have similar results in terms of how you score (thats in my experience and once again individual differences play a big role).

I was just about to say check the website as the PW would be about 45.

Either get the 49 AW or possibly look at 3 specialty wedges as suggested above.

id piss the SW off and go PW (should be about 45 – 47), 53 wedge, and a 58* wedge. Thats what i have and it allows me to have drv, 3wd, 5wd, 3 – PW, 53, 58, putter. I think that by having too many wedges, it can make some higher HCers too confused on what to hit. JMHO

I was in a similar position several months back & decided to invest in a good gap wedge I hit P.W 110 & S.W. 80 so that was a fair gap, the gap wedge goes a consistant 95m so it works in well. I have also found that I now prefer to chip with the gap wedge Rather than the P.W.

A bad day on the golf course is better than no golf at all. :(

Are you comfotable hitting the 5 off the deck?

Dan

i agree with chris on the too many wedges thing. If you have that many clubs that hit under 90m you get ancy around the green. If its close enough to throw it there then its close enough to take part swings with a wedge. I used to play with a 52 – 56 – 60 wedge combo but just never really used the 52 cause i would punch it in 95-110 with a PW on a windy day or just belt a 56 on a still day. Then i could carry 3 woods.
Something else to consider is that the burner 3 hybrid is a liar. It’s 17deg, and like all burner model clubs has a long, light shaft. So If that fits in the place of a 3 iron i’d be surprised. I reckon burner 4 hybrid aswell is a definite option as theyre great clubs and easy to hit. And it will definitely go further than your 4 iron.

I disagree, with not having too many wedges. I believe that having another wedge gives you another option for a full swing distance. It will take a half swing out of the equation if you are stuck between wedges. I also believe that a punch shot is a hard shot for a high handicapper to play and trying to belt a ball will lead to even less consistency. When chipping you will find that you will tend to use a single club that you are the most confident with (that is my experience) but when taking a full swing or pitch I definitely appreciate have an extra wedge. Hybrids are another good idea and worth looking into.

Hi Dan
5W is my favourite at the moment, average about 190 off the deck with the odd crack around 200.

Thanks for all the input everyone, decided to go with the GW picked up an R7 to match the set from Edwin Watts for US$49 plus postage. Drummonds and Golfworld told me I wouldn’t be able to get one and if I did it would be a fake.

Mr C. went to the range today to practice that full swing with the lobby, skulled the first couple until I worked out the best ball placement, then started hitting em sweet.

I own 5 wedges, this gives me choice, I can leave a wedge, or my 4 iron, one of my fairway woods depending on the course I am playing.

I haven’t had my 4 iron in my bag since I got the wedges. I use a hybrid that fills that spot when I want it too.

All I am saying is don’t limit yourself to 14 clubs, you can always leave one or two in the boot….
