Using a broomstick putter

Hi guys,

Has anyone had problems with the putter and gone to a broomstick or tried one? How have you found it?

My opinion is, going to a broomstick indicates you have a serious problem with you game. Try Rebel Sports.

Force it

I haven’t used anything but a broomstick mallet for more than a couple of rounds since I started playing again a few years ago. It’s not broken, so why change it? I’d struggle to derive any benefit from doing so.

Changing equipment should be a last resort, though.

A few years ago I used a broomstick because I was putting really poorly, used it for a few months and then when I returned to my normal putter it felt like coming home and really comfortable. I think that changing putters can be really useful sometimes when your confidence is low.

If you’re female, over 60 or don’t mind being constantly heckled then this is a good option.

its not golf in my view…how anyone cant hold a normal putter is beyond me

Why isn’t it golf? It’s a putter… it putts…

But for how long, there has been talk that they may be banned by R&A for next lot of rule changes.

'As in Life
So in Golf'

I can’t see why they would. They’ve been around since forever… why on earth would they be banned now? If they’re so much better than a short putter, why isn’t Nick O’Hern winning everything? How could they ban them – for a right hanger, ban the left hand shaft/body anchor? Easy – putt with the right hand on top. Ban shafts over a certain length… what will really tall people do?

I’m convinced that they don’t offer any advantage over short putters, apart from feel. Despite not using much but a broomstick mallet when I play, I’ve tested both long and short mallet putters and reckon that apart from feeling more comfortable with the action and weight of a long shafted putter, there’s no difference. If there was, everyone would use them – especially touring pro’s who are exposed to as much equipment as they want.

I like a short extra stiff shaft in my driver because I can control it – but people using standard length regular flex shafts who drive 50m shorter than I do aren’t trying to ban equipment that suits my swing. Why are putters any different?
