I have progressed in ball striking beyond where I thought I would be. I gave the game away for about 8 years untill 2002 (played once in that time) I was always off about 15-17 I have worked my way down to 11 using the same set of irons (wilson Pi5’s (padrig Haringtons clubs) for about the last 4 years basically they are forged size with minimal off set ..but they are just cast head I want an iron with a bit more forgivness but a forged head, i trialed some srixon 506 and they were pretty good and had no problem playing to close my handicap with them has anyone recently gone to forged clubs? some models

Went to Titleist 755’s about 9 months ago after using H.G.s for 6 years and can’t believe the difference, excellent off the club face and consistent distance(for me anyhow).
I can move the ball both ways..... I just don't know when..... |

I just got the latest Golfsmith catalogue.

You may have trouble getting Snake eyes out here as they will not ship that brand to Aus due to their distribution rights in Australia through Golfgear Australia (qld based) Golfsmith brand should be OK. These however should be available through a good clubmaker and therefore you should be able to get some demos made up- best way to go me thinks.

Its a bugger SEs are not available in parts form outside of the US direct. Easy to bring over but then a major pain if there are warranty issues.

I’ve got KZG Evolutions. Forged, and with a progression from cavity in the long irons to blades in the short irons. Great irons, not cheap.

thanks guys I still want something thats still reasonably forgiving has anyone used srixon 701’s…they look good

A high quality cast head vs a high quality forged club? Will it improve your game? The simple answer is no it will not. Why go to a forged blade if you hit your cast irons good? Any top quality iron will feel like gold if you middle it. A forged iron will not make you play better, nor will it improve your handicap. The only thing it will do is diminish your bank balance, possibly raise a few eyes and that is about it. Clubs help but it is the person using them that is what counts.

If its what you want mind you, it will more than likely give you that extra bit of confidence when standing over the ball. That extra confidence could be the key to making you a better player/dropping that hc.

I disagree with you Mr.Consistency. It is great to have a driver, set or irons in your hands as clubs can help certian people but will they make you better just because they look good to one’s eyes? The only way to get confidence in golf is to put scores on the board if you seek to lower your handicap. Too many golfers think that it is their golf clubs causing them problems or preventing them from achieving what they seek out of the game. I will most likely cause a storm here but there are far too many golfers or your average weekend hacker that are taken for a ride with golf clubs, getting fitted and the list goes on. My suggestion is to use what you have and work around with them more importantly.

Guess everyone has there own opinion on this one. Consider expensive putters, there was a thread recently that asked why people bother with them and one of the conclusions was the confidence they inspired. I think alot of the ability that golfers have is somewhat hard to get at because of how they perceive their own game. E.g. How hard is it to hit a ball 100m with a certain degree of accuracy. Chances are if you got out your SW you would land the vast majority in a tight cluster (relative to skill level I guess), but put a water hazard 60m out and try, and it becomes that much harder because of the risk it creates and this leads to a subsequent loss in confidence in the shot. Having clubs that inspire confidence (that, “I can make this shot” attitude – which I got when I bought my set of irons and wedges) make it that much easier IMO.

I see both opinions and both have valid points I guess also if you go to a forged head (will consider forged CB’s though) That you need to strike it well to play well…it forces you to play and practice also… Its almost like challenging yourself….I wont sell my wilson p15’s if anyone has seen them they are the same characteristics as a forged head, just not forged and I hit them very well so theres no reason why using a forged head will be any harder

When I was looking at my r7’s a mate said that exact statement, which might or might not be true but it does remove blaming the clubs as the reason for bad play. From the moment I first hit a ball with the new sticks I was hitting the ball with more confidence, longer, straighter and sweeter than I was two days earlier with my old sticks. Now I can only blame my ability (or lack of) and can concentrate on improving my game.

I hit ping s59, titleist 735cm and srixon 506 today and they all feel and look very nice. Only hit them in a golf net though, so very hard to compare distance, trajectory, shape. I am in a similar position, although I have oversized heads at the moment and as I am improving am just seeking a club with a bit more feel and workability. I believe a new set of stick can inspire you to improve, as long as you have the game to make them work. I know that I wish I was looking down at something different. In the same way, going out and buying the latest and greatest clubs isn’t going to improve your game if you can’t hit the thing well to begin with, and I think a lot of people (mostly 15-27 handicap once a week golfers) fall into the trap in getting fitted out with Taylor Made’s or Callaways and go out there and expect automatic improvement without working on their game.
Srixon i-701 Tour irons are HERE!!!!! |

Might add this as well Dave (as I know you don’t mind a little Ebaying). The irons I have are Tommy Armour Silverscot MB Blades. I got them from the us ebay site and they are really quite a steal for what they are. The clubface is small (which will require a more precise swing) and the feedback and feel off the middle are most really good (not much to compare them to though). They also have them in CBs with Precision Rifle shafts in a couple of flexes. Heres a link to the CBs And one to the Muscle Backs, Also the finish is the sexiest chrome I have ever seen, the pics really don’t do justice.

Might add that the Muscle backs are a little on the lightish feeling side. I really like them mind you and have the 5.0 shafts. Maybe cavity backs are heavier but I ain’t sure. Heres what they actually look like.

No dramas. Just a VERY satisfied customer passing on the knowledge :-) P.s. The wedges are murder to find, so I reckon if you get them, get seperate wedges (I’ve got vokeys).

I have cleveland CG 11’s I carry 48 52 56 60….. People ask why I carry 4 wedges…its because I can….I often use them all in a round also trying the srixon 701’s this weekend

There is a set of Mizuno MP 32’s in the Classifieds (they aren’t mine before you ask!) and I reckon they would be right up your alley. I have recently changed to them as well , from Maxfli Revolutions and could not be happier. Beautiful to hit and look at. The big surprise for me was how easy the long irons are. Really nice flight throughout the set. I have also had a hit into a net with the Srixon 701 Tour and that felt nice as well. Hard to tell ball-flight into the net though.
