Ping Eye 2+

Read and heard so much about the Ping Eye 2+. Being a golf club junky, when a full set with matching serial numbers 1 iron-sw came up on Ebay I just had to have them. Finished up winning them for $150 incl postage. Have not recieved them yet.

Just wondering your thoughts everyone.

Will let you know what I think after I’ve had a good crack with them.

They are the biggest selling club ever! IMO they are a great set of weapons. I now have i5’s but still use eye2 SW and LW, I have tried all types of wedges but always go back to the eye2’s. I think you got yourself a could deal.

Wow! Are they the copper berrylium version? If they are that is very cheap for a set in reasonable condition. The EYE 2 are still held in very high esteem with the original release (without the grooves reworked) being a collectors item.

Not the copper berrylium. But I thought whole set 1 iron to Sand Wedge all matching numbers was a steal.

Again, do not want to say too much until I recieve them and have a look in the flesh.

My Dad bought my brother a set of the copper beryllium ones (green dot). Yes we know they are toxic. They’re lefties so I can’t use them, but they do feel great when I swing them.

Which dot are yours?

Great clubs but you may find the lofts are weak compared to current clubs but that can fixed.

The Eye2+ 6 iron loft is 32 degrees, the i10 6 iron is 30.5 degrees.

I have never heard of the clubs themselves being toxic. ( I don’t chew my clubs). The smelting process using berryllium gave off some pretty toxic by-products though.

Aha!! You have discovered the secret of why the average player can hit modern irons further;

“From Leaderboard.com

CREEP
Consider that in 1960, there was no club called a “gap wedge” or “approach wedge” or “attack wedge”, etc. There was no need for it because the pitching wedge of the 1960s was the same club that today is called a “gap wedge”.

“Longer” sells. If Manufacturer A can boast that in totally fair tests their clubs propel the ball an average of ten yards farther… well, they’ll sell more clubs. So what do they do? They scrape off the “8” from an 8-iron and stamp a “9” on it. All of a sudden, Manufacturer A has got a 9-iron that hits as long as Manufacturer B’s 8-iron.

Amazing how technology works.

Actually, the change has been more gradual. Anything as radical as swapping a “9” for an “8” would have been too easy to spot and would have proven too embarrassing. A more subtle approach was chosen.

Over the years, each iron (down to the pitching wedge) became just a little bit less-lofted so that the ball would travel just a little bit further than the previous model. Only the sand wedge was left alone. That’s for two reasons: (1) The sand wedge is not used to achieve distance. (2) Reducing the loft of the sand wedge would have made the club less useful in the very sand traps it was designed for.

Gradually, the difference in loft between the pitching wedge and the sand wedge increased. In the 1960s, there was a five degree difference between the sand wedge and the pitching wedge. Now there is a ten-degree difference. So the club manufacturers responded by inventing a new club, the “gap wedge”. It has a loft mid-way between the pitching wedge and the sand-wedge.”

Mine are black dot. Lefties also.

I have read that they are shorter than most other irons. Now I know why, thank you Whambam. It may help that the set goes all the way up to 1 iron.

With my set of Srixon 506, (10 months old) I have noticed a slightly larger gap in between my 8 and 7, whereby I almost need a a club in the middle.

8 iron – 130m
7 iron – 150m

anyone else noticed something similar

Beryllium is toxic. If you read some safety specs on Beryllium, you’ll find that amost all of them state that you should not sand or polish Beryllium, or at the very least you should wear protective clothing (mask, gloves, sealed goggles, etc).

As far as I understand it, the dots represent variation from Ping’s specifications. According to that site, the specs listed are for black dot. I found a page a while back stating what each dot meant, but I can’t find it again.

The dots are Pings way of showing the lie.

Maroon = 4.5 upright from Ping standard
Silver = 3.75 up
White = 3 up
Green = 2.25 up
Yellow = 1.5 up
Blue = .75 up
Black = Standard
Red = .75 Flat
Purple = 1.5 Flat
Orange =2.25 Flat
Brown = 3 Flat
Golf = 3.75 flat.

Remember these are variences around Pings standard, which may be different to the standard of another manufacturer. Also over time lies can change (or may have been deliberately bent) so worth rechecking any clubs you buy.

down and out…did ya get that?

Where did you get that information? As I said, I found it once but haven’t been able to track it down again. The shop that sold the clubs to Dad said that they’d fit them for him.

Many thanks! :)

I still have my set from 1986 – red dot. Great clubs, the original shafts are now quite dated. I didn’t have mine ‘fixed’ because they were they original patents that were deemed legal or ‘grandfathered’. There are a few articles on this if you google.

I have had the Cally X-14 Pros, which I thought were similar.

I recently received a set of i10s. They now replace my Srixon Pro 100s. The AWT shafts are absolutely great for my swing. I have been able to flush my irons as well as shape them. They are very similar to the i3s of old.

This irons have shown up the weakness in my game. I now have to work on my driver so that I can drop my handicap to lower.

Recieved the Eye 2’s yesterday, have had a quick hit, and am pleased with the purchase. Will replace the srixon’s in the bag for a while to give them a good workout.

The SW grooves are well worn, has any heard of re-grooving clubs at all
