Eeep! I don't know what clubs to get

Ok I better start by saying thankyou in advance for anyone who can help me :-) I’ve had the same set of clubs (Rapier Phase II) since I was 14 years old …. I’m now 25 so I think I’m in desperate need of new clubs (most of them still have the original shafts and they generally feel dead to play with). I do not have the same strength and physique of my 14 year old self and I finally want to treat myself with some decent golf clubs. I am shamelessly attracted to name brands lol so even though I know clones could be a cheaper alternative…. well I just don’t think my ego will allow me to go that way (terrible I know). heh heh Anyway when I was playing regular golf (once a week) I was shooting around 76-80 … now that I don’t play as often (once every fortnight if I’m lucky) I’m shooting in the low 80s. I’m still lucky enough to keep myself fairly competitive (even if my handicap has drifted from 6 to 9). ok so some specs to help you help me get an idea of what clubs I could look at: - I’m a female golfer - I hit the driver between 250 and 270m (no that’s not a typo) - I hit my 6 iron around 150-155m - I am a straight iron player and can shape the ball easily. - I don’t like graphite shafts (the sticks I have are regular flex). Any ideas? I went to Drummonds today and the fella there was suggesting Taylormade r7s TP irons (are they worth my go?) I don’t want to spend more than $1000

Iv just bought a new set of irons. I didnt want to spend a fortune either. Your best bet is to find out what specs you are (find out your length) and such and hunt ebay and the classifieds. Its horses for courses really, if you want really nice fitted set youl pay for it. Iv realised standard legth clubs are right for me, so i just got a standard length set of irons in a shaft that suits me and just get the lie angles done after. You will find some great deals on the bay though, just be carefull of the seller. Best of luck. Chris

I would still go and see a clubfitter, you would be a little hard press to get forged at that price, but you should be able to get a good cast s/steel 304 431 head, with a shaft that suits your swing, set up for your hight and swing etc. Go and see a good clubfitter.just my 2 cents

Thanks for the responses :-) I don’t want to do eBay though cause I’m not very trusting when I can’t touch the item I’m actually going to buy. Otherwise I might have thought about it considering prices etc. I don’t really know the difference between forged and cast s/steel but I will take your advice and speak to a good club fitter :-)

Forged feels a little softer though impact. 304 s/steel is a soft cast which will feel soft like forged, 431 is firmer, and quite common. Forged cost more because they are pressed and take more time to make, why they cost more. Cast is cast and cost less to make, One thing is for sure that ball dosn’t care if its forged or not.Club fitters like forged and 304 as its easy to bend for lie and loft adjustments easy +-4degs 431 is a little harder to work, please keep away from the cheap 17-4 cast as you can’t bend more than +-1deg or it might snap. And welcome to the forum. Cheers Nigel

Select a club you like, then go buy them off ebay or a reputable online retailer in the States. You should be able to pick up a brand new set of irons for under $1K from any of the big retailers (eg. Golfsmith). R7 TP http://www.golfsmith.com/products/TM1290 retail at USD$799.

is it a good thing or a bad thing to buy just the heads of the clubs from the states (I’m planning a potential one week trip in Nov) and then having them fitted here when I get home? I’m at a cross roads because if I get them from the states I could save $$$ but I would like a new set before I play Country Teams which is Sept 2nd lol Little miss difficult lol

You’re female, 25 yo, play off single digits, out-drive most of the guys on the forums, want to spend a grand on new sticks… Don’t think you need to apologise for any of your questions. Won’t be surprised if you get some outright proposals of marriage sometime soon. Mind you, your avatar is a bit of a worry. Looks like that ball might have been a lethal projectile…
Reverse every natural instinct you have and do just the opposite of what you are inclined to do and you will probably come very close to having a perfect golf swing. - BEN HOGAN, POWER GOLF |

ahahahaha thanks I know my questions will be a bit silly that’s all because even though I know how to hit the ball (most of the time lol) I don’t know much when it comes to equipment. as for my avatar, I have a love for those corny horror movies that make you laugh more than scream so I figured it would do me justice heh heh

L-J,,,,,,,Sorry,those distances tell me that you are longer than most pro women golfers in the world….check stats….I could be wrong…..I have played with quite a few low markers (female) and they just dont hit that far…in fact a lot of male lowies dont hit that far…..if I,m wrong I,m sorry

haha yeah I do hit around there when I play regular golf :-) I’ve always been a big ball striker I’m usually a driver / pitching wedge on most par fours and a can normally make most par 5’s in two with a 4 / 5 iron for my second club :-) If I had time and money on my side I would have probably been making an attempt at making the tour. :-) These days with a hand me down driver (which doesn’t really feel right) I’ve only been hitting around 230, 245 on a consistent level… I’m hoping more regular golf coming up will make a difference :-D

Great little course, had any snow, one of the regs here plays there
|
|
yeah we did have some snow :-D was exciting for me as I don’t live in Trentham there are photos of the course covered in snow on the Trentham website. I’m loving the course as it’s teaching me to develop more rescue style shots (can someone say trees? lol) I used to be a member of Melton Valley and now when I compare the courses I find Melton is just too easy when it comes to recovery shots. It doesn’t really matter which fairway I knock my driver onto because the pitching wedge always gets over the trees there….. whereas that’s not always a possiblity at Trentham :-P

I don’t know about an outright proposal… but what about a thinly veiled/disguised one? :P Seriously though, find a good local club fitter, there are a few members of this forum who are very good from what I understand. It can be a VERY expensive case of trial and error getting the same results that an experienced club fitter can get almost immediately using the right knowledge to choose your equipment.

Are you looking to buy irons or a complete set for the $1000?

For $1000 + just alittle you can get some nice Forged Jap clubs. Epon, Tourstage, Miura, R7 forged not the crap ones from China. Hell even some nice Wishon with whatever shaft you want really. Drummonds, golfworks etc etc will be an absolute rip off. Best to wait until you get to the states, choose what you like then bring them home or have them sent over later. What you pay in shipping from Japan or the states is pennies on what you will save. Also, check your distances as they are somewhat loooong! You would outdrive and outhit 98% of the women on the LPGA tour! good luck.
