Center shafted or heel shafted putters

Just wanted to get opinions regarding what you think is the better putter: heel shafted or center shafted putters… and what sort of putters you have?

Different styles suit different strokes – a heel-shafted putter is usually best for people with a ‘gate’ stroke. I think centre-shafted putters might suit a straight back-and-through stroke, I’m not sure though. Personally I own and use a heel-shafted anser-type (Cleveland Gutcheck), a heel-shafted mallet (Odyssey WH #5) and centre-shafted high-moi design (Macgregor 6.4k), depending on how I’m feeling/putting that particular day. Number 1 most important goal with fitting a putter is to create a club that will naturaly guide the golfer into the proper putting position (eyes over the ball, arms straight down, etc.) and still allow him or her to remain as comfortable and relaxed as possible before and during the stroke. most important for performance. Lenght is important loft is important Swingweight/MOI is important Lie is important Not so important and a minor affect on performance. Head design is important for aesthetics and looks of the putter because if you don’t like the look of it you are not going to drain it. Sound of impact is also important for aesthetics. Cheers Nigel
Watch out typos + poor grammar. |

The majority of golfers use a heel shaft over centre shafted. I have tried both types and many different priced and designs, and found a 33.5` heel putter suited me best. You could be completely different. As previously mentioned, as long as your eyes are over the ball at address, and you are comfortable, it doesn’t matter either way which putter you use. Even pros cannot agree on putters. In the past, some pros have used heel, centre, shortened, broomstick, belly or even changed from right to left putters in search of the ideal putter for them.
It's the only game in the world where you can call penalty on yourself. It's the greatest game there is. |

grab some impact tape and stick it on your current putter. Go and putt 50 odd putts and look at YOUR most common impact position. If it is more toward the toe side from the sweet spot (the actual sweet spot, not necessarily the one painted by OEM) then a centre shafted one may help you as the face should twist less with toe area mishits. Conversely if you are more toward the heel with your mishits, go the heel shafted. To find the putter sweet spot, hold it in the air with the sole of the club parallel to the ground and tap the face with a key or a AAA battery. You will feel the club twist when you are off the sweet spot, or bounce nicely back if you hit the sweet spot. Enjoy!
