How far should I be hitting my 3wd?

G’day folks, I only recently took up the fine game of golf and started with a cheap set of Dynacst clubs. 8 months later, I’ve upgraded my iron set to TM RacOS2, and my driver to a Nike Ignite, (got them as cheap clearance for new models) and now the only clubs from my origional set in my bag, are my putter and my three wood. Anyhow, I’m finding that even though I hit my 3wd cleanly, I can hit my 3iron just as far and more accurately from the fairway, (approx 185-195 mtrs). I’m wondering if there’s any point to a 3wd, I can’t hit my driver that well, but usually clear 220mtr when I do. Should I be looking for a better quality 3wd?

I think you might be a candidate for a threedriver as mentioned in other posts. (High Loft Driver Head on a 43 inch shaft)

Your next purchase should be some lessons and a shag bag full of balls…

Cheers people, have already begun lessons but started on my short game, putting, chipping, pitching and my iron shots have all been covered. Driving is my next lesson, hence I haven’t got rid of my driver. But that wasn’t what I’d asked. I hit the 3wd off the deck well, it`s just that my new 3 iron goes just as far and more accurately. Like I asked before, is it just because the 3wd is a begginers club? I’m hoping to start breaking 80 round the easy courses when that driver starts coming on.

The three wood is not a beginners club. Most pros carry one. If you do hit your three iron as far as your three wood theres a couple of possibilities. 1. Your action is not yet good enough to deal with the longer shaft. 2. Your 3 wood is a POS. Go shopping!

Your iron has about 21degs of loft and your 3 wood has about 14 to 15. the 14-15degs might be to much loft. After a point decreasing your loft is not going to give you any more distance, Yours might be 21 or so degs. Heads up 3 wood is always going to be a hard one to hit off the deck because of the loft and lenght the golden rule with clubfitting is longer the club and lower the loft the harder its going to be to hit.. Try a 5 (18deg) or a 7 wood (21degs)and see how you go. Mate breaking 80 is not easy even on a soft course, Hope this helps. Cheers Nigel

Thanks guys, many possible solutions. May have to give them all a go. I’ll post again when I’m gettin some results, or I break 80 and throw the @#*%ng 3wd out. ;)

Hey flip l’m a hacker so take it or leave it but 3 woods are @#%&ing pricks of things to hit, this is what l do; if people are watching hit your 3 iron, if people aren’t watching put a tee under the ball and hit your driver. That’s how you break 80. If you wan’t to do away with your handicap stop counting your putts. l play off 2 and l can’t remember the last time l counted a putt.

I play off 7, I love my 3 Wood, BUT it is a good quality. In my opinion, worth it’s weight in gold. For me, it is more consistent around my tight course, and I use it more often than my Driver off the Tee. I get aprox 260/270 from my 3W and aprox 280/290 from Driver. Takes a bit of hitting off the deck though, but worth it when you get one away!! My advice (if you are getting serious about the game) get a good 3W, it is worth it.

A pattern is emerging here. Not funny, or interesting, or enlightening… ever.

IF….you are hitting the 3wood STRAIGHT….. WTF if it only goes 110 straight up the fairway? With your handicap, you can take 2 or 3 to get on/near the green and still be competitive…..DO NOT get involved with ‘how far’....the further you can hit it long, the further it goes into the woods (sorry Tiger)....the secret is to keep it in play….for your information….MOST ‘C’ graders hit their 3 wood as far as their drivers…they just hit the 3 straighter…’B’ graders won’t hit 3 ‘because they don’t NEED to’.....and ‘A’ graders only hit it when they ‘KNOW they can!’.....so if you can make sense of all that….hit it as far as you CAN, as long as it stays in play….it’s a simple game , made complicated by humans!

i’m also a beginner and i took the 3W (16) out of the bag since I can’t hit it on the fairway.. i’m using instead a 20 hybrid. more consistent and goes farther that my 3W or 5W .. but I know I need to practice on the 3W… maybe will take lessons just for the woods..

Like I said origionally Wyong, my original queiry, was that since I have two clubs in the bag, is it possible my swing with the 3wd is crap, or is it the club? Or are they both fine, and I’m lucky enough to hit my new 3 iron really well. But thanks for the advice all the same mate. I think I have my answer thanks guys, and I’ll update you all on results as soon as I have enough money to get it. Cheers ALL.

3 woods off the deck are one of the harder shots in golf. As suggested above, I’d park the 3 wood for a while and get something like a 20 degree hybrid or a 5 wood. Both should be longer on average than your 3 wood.

I agree its a hard shot to hit but it takes practice I say. I have just put a 3 wood back into the bag abd its useful for about 2 or 3 times a round if that I think the mistake I used to make is say on a very long par 4 and I could nt make it in two I would try to hit a 3 wood in, bang slice suddenly you take 6 or maybe 7 if you lose ball. why not hit hyrnid or 5 wood and eave yourslef a 40-50 meter pitch and try to make par that way. Worst damage you can do is maybe 5 if you two putt. n a 420 meter par 4 i dont get annoyed at 5, If I take 6 or 7 it ruins your round completely. that said some 3 woods are much easier to hit than others, I suppose find one that works, I bought an adams and its dead seay to hit most times but i still only use it when its going to save me a shot.
so John (Daly) how did you make a 14?....well i missed the putt ior a 13 dickhead |
