Cleveland Drivers

Hey Guys,

Looking at updating my driver from a tour special 460cc driver. I like the club, but im feel like i get a bit of flex when i swing through. Im not sure what shaft is on the club (its the standard shaft). I hit a 400cc cleveland launcher today and i hit it really well (long and straight). The shaft seemed to be nice and solid. I hit my tour special pretty well, but i feel i could hit it longer and more consistant with a stronger shaft. So im thinking about a cleveland highbore or a laucher (whats the difference?). I know there is a few models, just after any feedback on any of the models. I havent had my swing speed checked but i would say im average speed, definately not on the slow side though. What is the disadvantage of playing a driver with a shaft that is too stiff? My current driver is 10.5 degrees and im thinking of going with the 10.5 degree again…...I have scrolled through some past reviews on the models on the forum and they look to get a good wrap. Any help on the best angle and shafts would be great….Chris

Launch angle could be a little lower and the shaft could feel a little boardy, And because if it feels a bit stiff it may make you try and hit it a bit harder, and therfore it may cause miss hits by trying to swing to hard. Also you could check out the section on fitting of shafts in the main page of ISG under equipment and repair Cheers Nigel. Thanks for that Nigel. Thats a good article. Cleared it up a little. Im going to head over to Drummond today and get my swing speed checked. Im just not sure on whether to go a 9.5 or 10.5 driver? Im thinking a 10.5 more so with a standard flex shaft. I would say il buy a new one on ebay (the prices are too good to pass up), but most of the 10.5’s seem to be stiff flex shafts…...

Went to drummond today and had a hit on the monitor. My swing speed appears to be around 90mp/h with launch angle around 12 – 15. The Cleveland highbore XL 10.5 was ok to hit, but i didnt particulary like to look or sound of the driver. I hit the highbore with a stiff and regular flex fujukura shaft and they both felt similar. Is there much difference with the Highbore to the launcher?

I’m using a standard cleveland Hi-bore and its a great driver, could easily get one for less than $200 on ebay, easy to hit and great distance. at 90mph reg shaft should be fine, I havent tried the XL model

so John (Daly) how did you make a 14?....well i missed the putt ior a 13 dickhead

I’ve got a 460cc Launcher TI 9.5* with a stiff shaft. Average swing speed was about 113mph, but there is much more to it than that.

I’ve read that many people think the stock cleveland shafts are too soft, but for me, it works. Have never hit a driver so well, and consistently lon and straight.

Sorry if there are any typos, my 5 months old daughter is helping me type.

yeah thanks guys. Im looking on ebay at all the cleveland drivers at the moment. The guy at drummond said that the Highbore XL and the highbore are no different, just the looks. Besides the shape difference of the highbore to the launcher 460cc, is there much difference in the way they hit or is it just new and cosmetic changes?

Different technology. Different head sizes. Different ball flight.

The Hibore is not 460cc, unlike the Launcher 460. The Hibore generally has more of a boring ball flight. The Hibore generally has a very tight dispersion even on mis hits.

You will find generally glowing feedback on the Launcher. The Hibore however, is not every ones cup of tea, both from a cosmetic POV and for ball flight. The Hibore has a shallow face by todays standards. I would recommend demoing both as they are very different clubs.

I hit the Hibore, it is without a doubt the straightest club I have ever hit. It will not rescue a crap swing, but off centre hits still fly amazingly straight.

Just a quick question about the hibore, I was speaking to a golf compent supplier a couple of weeks back, and he stated that his son was sponsered by Cleveland, and beening so when trying to fit him to there new hibore driver. His son stated that he couldn’t hit them because the where basicly designed for there number one player eg Vijay, and he tends to over draw the ball, so they designed the club face to be open by as much as 2degs.Now I don’t plan on buying one of these heads just to fine out, and golf store don’t tend to let clubfitters cut loose with loft lie guages. The question i’m asking do any of you guys who hit these heads find that they tended to get more of a fade with them. Cheers Nigel.

The original Hibore and XL (non tour models) both have slightly closed faces. The Tour models are 2-3 degrees more open. Basically square.

I have only hit the Non tour models but find it wants to hit straight. I dont think it has a tendency to a fade from my experience.

Thanks for that info, its quite hard to find a club head or model that has a open club face, ie most are closed. That will help me a lot if I have to fit someone who needs a open club face. Cheers again Nigel. PCS member.

Absolutely right, Vijay has switched to the Hibore XL, not the tour model

Thanks Tim, I don’t get to see a lot of VJ driving the ball on TV, Seems to be of late Tiger and more Tiger + I don’t have cable.Cheers for the heads up.How come the tour is designed to be that open? 2-3deg, is a s#it load, it must look a bit odd looking down off the tee.Whats the theory! in the design, from a engneering point of veiw, and I don’t mean to help people correct a draw, does the CEO overly draw the ball?.

Hi Nigel,

Vijay’s drivers are actually about seven degrees open, to allow him to fully release the club because his swing is a big cut. The Tour HiBore heads will probably sit square to a degree or two open, and the regular heads are probably a little closed. AFAIK, the only difference between the two heads are the face angle and hosel length, with the tour model having a longer hosel to allow for bending.

Cheers,

Col
