Maximum, not recommended, is 14 clubs

More and more I’m seeing people on here working out how they can arrange the 14 clubs they’re allowed to carry in their bag, but have they stopped to consider there isn’t a rule of golf that says a player must carry 14.

I think most amateurs make matters confusing and difficult for themselves.

For years I carried two woods, seven irons, two wedges and a putter: that’s only 12 clubs. I’ve added a 52 degree wedge lately, but I’m strongly considering taking it out, because it doesn’t help me play any better, so why confuse matters? Should I add a 60 just because I can? Of course not.

There’s a lot of bullsh1t that can get in your head in golf. It’s a hard enough game already without the player making it more so.

Agreed, Scottt. My father-in-law carries 2 woods, even numbered irons and a putter plus two wedges. More than enough to get him around his home course. I carry 14 and on most rounds at my home club I use most of them.

Good thing golf is such a relaxing pastime!

It’s personal choice, I’ve got about 20 clubs that are my gamers. But I always carry 4 wedges 48,52,56 and a 60deg. For me it is always about trying to shoot the lowest number. different club set ups for different courses. I personaly I don’t always use the 14 clubs in my bag but it is nice to have them there if I need them. My gamers are 10.5 driver 14 driver 5w 7w 9w 18.5 hybrid 21 hybrid 24 hybrid 28 hybrid 33 hybrid 5i-pw aw sw lobw plus about 5 different putters. I’ve got about 6 complete sets of irons and woods, Yes I might be a complete equipment freek, and be at the other end of the scale than you but that is what make the game great, it take all type to play this game.there is no right or wrong when it comes to how many clubs you have in your bag I.e don’t worry about what or how many clubs your playing parnter is using, just grip it and rip it.

how do you play consistent golf changing your clubs all the time???

I don’t care what anyone carries, but I’d be cringing if I was playing with a bloke who had 4 wedges and hybrids up to and including 33*.

I pratice every day with all clubs. I hit about 200 balls a day.I’ve also got a putting green in the front room.I’m just lucky my wife plays golf as well.Plus all my clubs are M.O.I fitted and TLTech fitted so it feels like i’m making the same swing with every club. So there is no consistency problems.

I don’t worry about people cringing, golf is a hard game, I just choose not to make it any harder than it is. So if it means I have to use a 33deg hybrid with more moi, lower cog, more forgiving on off center hits, to get a high shot to stick to a green from 150 out so be it. Also a 33deg hybrid kicks ass out of the long stuff.I Don’t see the point to handycap myself with my equipment.

I’ve been downsizing for a while now… Pretty much just taking everything out of the bag that I don’t hit well, which leaves me with driver (and it stays in the bag most of the time), 3 wood, 7 wood, irons 6-P, 49, 55 and 60* wedges, and a putter, for a total of 12 clubs. And I’m thinking of losing the lobber, as I can pull off most shots I need to with the 55*

But being that I only play socially, I’ve got no qualms about taking out 14 clubs, or more. If the mood strikes me, I might grab the hybrid, an extra driver or a couple other putters. To the other extreme, I sometimes go out with just my hybrid or 7-wood, 6 iron, wedge and putter. Carrying just a few clubs really frees you up (and makes you laugh at your playing partner lugging 14 clubs, 2 dozen balls and a frozen 2 litre bottle of water in his staff bag…)

I actually regard most clubs from callaway and TM AS “Hybrids” . . .

Those X20’s are bigger than my Hogan Hybrid….

Need I remind you gentlemen that John Ball, the great amateur from Hoylake, frequently played with only two clubs, and played as well as anyone else with a complete bagful of ironmongery.

Best wishes,

Its not my fault that the software here is rooted and my name doesnt show up.

The site has just been upgraded, and yes there are some issues with the site now but I’m sure if we give them a little bit of time they can rectify any issues. Cursing the site won’t help, maybe you should email ISG with the issues you have (with the site that is) so they can fix.

If you make something idiot proof someone will design a better idiot.

And if he was around today – I would play him anytime for as much cash as you like….

Mate, sorry but thats all just too frigging hard. I dont really care if my name doesn’t show up – its not my problem. I’ll happily wait another couple of weeks, maybe even a month, until the ISG guys get the forums working right.

Hopefully by then there will still be a few people left here to chat with, assuming they havent all nicked off to other golf sites where the content is flowing and the problems are minimal.

Oh, and I still reckon this is a stupid thread..

Seve Ballesteros learned golf at age 7 using a cut-down 3-iron. Maybe there is a lesson in that for all of us.

One thing that I have seen over the years (especially with my game) is with all the club choices now we are forgetting how to invent shots or play something other than a full swing. This can be due to a full set, hybrids, 4 wedges etc.

Not if you are as way ward off the tee as me ;-)

I am generally new to the game of golf. I look at golf like I look at everything else in life, including my work. If you have the access to technology that makes a task easier to perform, then why not use it. Ie hybrids, 460cc drivers, wedges, mallet putters and oversize clubs. I appreciate your comments about inventing shots, but the game of golf is hard enough for me to keep me thinking of what to do next. My 2 cents

Sure golf is hard enough. ;-)

But it’s like learning to run, first you must learn to walk i.e. mastering only a few clubs.

That’s a fair point Brett, I know exactly what you mean. :)
