Taylormade R6 460 - Head Rattle...

Hi

I have had my R7 for about 3 months now. A few weeks back I hit a beast of a drive (even if I do say so myself :) ) and a rattle appeared in the head of the club. I checked the weights were screwed in tight enough, and they were fine.

Worried that my new baby had died on only the 4th hole of the round, I teed up another ball and hit it. Not as good a connection as the 1st, but the rattle went away. Club is hitting fine, but concerned about the rattle coming back…

Anyone got any ideas? From looking on the net, it may have been a bit of epoxy that came loose – but where will it have gone, and will it re-appear?? Its fine at the moment, but I don’t want to hang about and wait if the club is essentially new and still in the 1 year warranty….

Any advice welcome!

Cheers Mike

Send it back! If it is only 3 months old it will still be under warranty.

...but its not rattling any more. Will the shop I bought it from take my word for the fault?? The R7 460 is no longer stocked/made so they can’t even just swap it for another.

Unfortunately, I am leaving Perth in 5 weeks, which is prob a bit on the tight side for returning to TM for inspection etc??

Hit some more balls or bang the butt of the club on the ground and see if the rattle will appear. If there was a rattle in the head from my experience it will return.

Although the R7 460 is discontinued, if the club is under warranty and cannot be repaired it would have to be replaced with the latest model. Take it back ASAP.

This happened to me with a Titleist driver and it was replaced without any problems. As bossofthemoss said keep playing the driver until the noise returns. Once you start hearing it again stop using it and take it to the place of purchase. I’m 95% sure Taylor Made will either replace or fix the problem

cheers for advice.

I’ve tried banging both the head and the butt of the shaft on the ground (carpeted) and nothing. Have played 3 rounds since it happened and nothing has returned. Sods law, as soon as I have my 1st game of golf in Dubai it will start again and nobody in Dubai will touch it as it was bought in Australia…

I was in Golfbox yesterday buying a travel case for my clubs and asked them about it. They said most likely a bit of epoxy from the shaft fitting broke off, and when rattling the club, it basically broke up and will no longer rattle. In their experience, if a club does this, you can heat the head and the epoxy will soften and then bond to whatever hot part it finds.

I’m going to the range later today where I got the club and will talk to them about it. If I wasn’t leaving in 5 weeks I would be happy to send to TM to check it out, but I think that time is running out…

The problem is that during the making of the club they have compromised the seal at the bottom of the hosel. Whether it is the plug that has fallen into the head cavity or a piece of the glue has now broken off and gone into the head it will return at some stage to rattle again. It is possible that the piece is caught somewhere in the head atm. Either get it out or rattle-tack and heat will do the job. Make sure that when they fix the shaft back into the head, that they seal the hosel properly so this doesn’t happen again. Jon…

Do the weight screws on the head come all the way out?

If so why don’t you try and see if you can shake out any of the loose debris inside the head…? Haven’t played around with the screws on a r7, so forgive me if this suggestion is not possible!

I had the same problem with my Adams driver – the rattle would come and go. By coincidence it happened while i was at the driving range, and the club fitter there said it was a bit of epoxy – he then heated up the head, swung the club, and the rattle disappeared and has not come back (yet).

It’s more likely to be a little bit of weld slag or the like than epoxy (epoxy tends to go up the shaft not into the head) on a factory finished club. Either way it’s no biggie. If the rattle occurs again take it back.

Home on The Range

Well, after 3 holes on Sunday, it was back. But by the 11th hole it was gone again. Dammit.

Taking it back to the pro shop tomorrow when I order my new irons. Will see about swapping it as I only have 3 weeks left in Australia so no time to wait for it to go to Taylormade for inspection/repair etc.

Love the club and the ball flight it gives, but they don’t have any more in stock and won’t get any more of the 460s… May see about a 905R as they are clearing them at the same price as what I paid for the R7… The rattle pisses me off when swinging.

Generally, if they do replace it, it’ll be with whatever the equivalent model is in the current line, so probably the Superquad for you. I’ve known people who’ve taken back defective R5’s and gotten R7 425’s as a replacement.

If I were you, I’d take the club to a driving range and hit balls untill the rattle comes back, then stop straight away and go to the pro shop.

Just back from pro shop….

They wanted to send it to Taylormade for inspection/repair/replacement but could not guarantee it would be back in 3 weeks (and I leave Australia in 3 weeks) so they swapped it over for a Titleist 905R. Happy as Larry!

Cheers for the advice
