I recently got into golf through a few mates, and loving going the hack whenever I can. However being a poor uni student in Melbourne the best i could do was an ancient set of clubs off eBay for $50. One of them even has tape for a handle, and the bag fell apart the 2nd time i took it out (but has since been replaced)

So what I am looking for is a nice forgiving set of irons good for a newbie like myself, but I don’t want to break the bank. Looking for any recommendations for good golf stores either in Melbourne or online and any tips on a good set of clubs to get myself started off properly with.

Best bargain I’ve seen around is Golfworks selling Cleveland Launcher irons for $399. Apart from that, take some time to educate yourself and pick something up off e-bay or the classifieds here.

Let your fingers do the walking.

For a beginner you can’t go past full starter sets – Wilson and TS by Srixon provide the best value for money. Typically driver, 3W, hybrid(s), nice forgiving irons and putter for around $380.

In this case you will do better through smaller retail outlets – the large chains and many Etraders will try to palm off older stock on you.

The current lines you are looking for are Wilson X-31, and Tour Special DC.

(1) Buy a second hand set. But not for $50 off the bay, can’t expect much more than rubbish for that. (2) Buy super game improvers or ultras or whatever they call them now. You want to learn and enjoy the game at the start so don’t let anyone sell you anything but ‘shovels’. If you become better then upgrade and make sure you have some deep pockets. (3) Get some lessons. (4) learn about the game and equipment via books, the web and especially fox sports! (5) Have fun!

PS: Study! I was also once a struggling uni student, but I didn’t take up golf seriously until I had finished my studies.

Id recommend a set of Taylor made rac os2 irons…I believe they are under $900 in golf stores…..very forgiving, oversize and big sweet spot. Ive seen them on ebay for under $600…i just bought a set off ebay for my dad..

The go for a great beginners set of irons is the Top-Flite Tour ones at GolfWorks for about $260 brand new. Vastly underrated, and super forgiveness.

Actually I’m interested in a few things. What are people’s thoughts on these irons? And secondly, can I get these refitted for me and if so, how much would I be looking at per club?

Rohan, the Hi Tracs are about a 15 year old design. They were a very solid club – one of the better cavity designs around at the time. My mate had a set and, even though the shafts were way too soft for me, I used to hit them like a dart.

From memory, they had filament wound graphite shafts which were the more consistent of the graphite shaft types of that era. But graphite shaft technology has gone ahead leaps and bounds in the time since the Diawas were released and this is where your clubs may fall down in comparison to newer models.

As far as getting them fitted goes, it can be an expensive process if it involves reshafting and you would probably better getting a new custom made set.

If the current shafts suit your swing and don’t need changing, then it is a viable option. Chances are they will need regripping, lie adjustments and possibly length alterations. This can all be done for around $15 per club.
