The pros' putter choices

It's interesting watching the Masters to notice that most of the guys in the tournament are using putters with a long hosel (Yes Callie, Ping Anser 2, SC Newport 2 style).

Do any of the experts here know why that might be?

Green speed - Green speed and green speed.

Retief and ViJay have their mallet though

Hmmmm... just switched from a Ping Anser 2x to a Taylor Made Rossa Sebring (Zing style w/ short hosel), something just isn't the same... I thought a change would help me out, but it just feels like it's always open at address and impact, and it feels like there's less of a connection between the hands and the putter face now.

I think I will buy an old Cameron Tei3 with the longer hosel, wanted one since Tiger was using one in the Ams in 95-96.

The close up I saw of Retief during Friday's round it looked like he was holding his old Yes! Tracy.

Interesting Scott, I just switched to a Sebring from a longer hosel like the Daytona, a wilson Kirk Currie, and a Odyssey dual force 2 No 1, and am delighted with the feeling that the face does not want to close and also a perceived improvement in feel between hands and putter face. Horses for courses I suppose. I did notice that if you balance the shaft, the toe hang of the Sebring is straight down, whereas a Corsa is fully face balanced, and all my Answer styles including the Daytona fall half way between.

Just to add, when he was here at The Vines, He teed off in the practice round with two putters in the bag. A TM Rossa (not sure which model) and that old Tracy. He used the Rossa on the first green for about three putts then threw it back to his caddie and finished practising on that green with the Tracy. He never touched the Rossa again for the rest of the round. From what I have been told, he starts nearly every tournament with a TM putter which goes into the Darrell Survey then often, but not always, switches back to the old Yes! putter.

Had 31 putts with the Sebring today, so all is forgiven!

Hi,

Would be very nice if someone can give me an insight on the difference between long/short hosel putter?

Hi,

Would be very nice if someone can give me an insight on the difference between long/short hosel putter?

The short hosel lets the toe hang almost vertically when you lay the putter shaft horizontally on the edge of a table or across your hand and let the head rotate freely and is most suitable for a "swinging door" or open-square-closed stroke.

A mid-length hosel reduces the amount of toe hang and is a more neutral type of putter that can be used for a variety of putting styles.

The next step is a centre shafted or face balanced putter which has no toe hang as the putter face will face straight up and be horizontal to the ground when left to rotate under its own weight. This is best for a straight back-straight through type of stroke as there is no "pulling" of the toe as its momentum tries to twist the grip in your hands at the end of the back stroke and through stroke like with a short hosel putter.

In between these three generalisations there are multiple variations to suit the individual.
