Driver Face Angle

Hey guys, i need someone to clarify a simple issue about face angle for me because I am a novice.

From what I understand, a close faced driver will help people who slice the ball whereas an open faced driver will help people who hook the ball.

1) Usually I tend to hook the ball, so the logical choice for me would be an open faced driver. However suppose sometime down the track i learn to correct my swing and no longer hook the ball, will having an open faced driver in this situation cause me to not have straight shots, as the face angle will put spin on the ball?

2) Also, is it worth getting a driver with a face angle to counter-act hook or slice, as wouldnt you eventually become accustomed to the club counter-acting an error in your swing, therefore leading you to never correct the actual reason you hook or slice the ball? (hope that made sense)

Thanks guys all help appreciated smile.gif

1.Yes
2.Yes. The reason most large driver heads are closed is because A. Most players fade/slice & B. A larger head is more difficult to square up at impact.

Bear in mind also when thinking through this that almost noone hits the ball dead stright. It's normally either a left to right or right to left ball flight which comes back to target (or not! LOL). Learning to live with whichever one you have & play equipment that gives you a more consistent & predictable flight is the key. There is no reason to feel guilty because you are compensating for the flaws in your action with the equipment. Noone has a perfect action to begin with. Rather look at it as making personal adjustments to suit your game & help improve your enjoyment & scores. Just like adjusting your car seat to suit your preferred driving position.

Sure you may find you need to change things around as your action improves (assuming it does) but why punish yourself now with ill fitted clubs?

If you legitimately hook the ball as opposed to an over the top pull move then I'd suggest looking for a head that is square to half a degree open. Most of the big heads say they are 1º shut but they often go way past that.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

I am using a MP001 460cc that is specially made for me by the staffs in Mizuno Japan, which has a 4 degree open face.

Sounds strange, but with the "up sweeping" action I tend to snap my wrist a lot that cause the hook, but I can do it so consistent, lets say 99.9% of the time. But I still got plenty of power behind the ball and able to hit around 280yards even I am getting older now.

To me I find adjustments of the equipment is easier than adjust my swing. Especially I already left Japan for good and my coach is not with me anymore.

So it really come down to...

Assume you have a bad hook swing (or the other way around)
1) Do you have a consistent swing?
2) If you do, can you afford improvement?
3) Lets say you can afford to do it, is the improvement really worth it?

In my case, I hit my fairway wood and irons with a natural consistent draw, its only my driver that really plays up. Change of the swing might get my driver on track but possibly stuff up everything else in my game (been there, done that) so with my case I can't afford to adjust my swing for just one club, and its more worthy for me to have a specially adjusted club.

OK thanks guys that answers my questions.

Also, man you guys responded quick. tongue.gif

Cheers
