Offset of Putter

I am thinking of buying a new putter, Rife is my possible choice as it can change the swing weight ans lie angle, but what is the main difference between centre shaft and offset?

Offset putter=built in lag?

Bumping this back up as I was going to ask the same question.

I’ve only noticed it on the blade style putters but what is the function of the offset?

The theory as I understand it is to keep the hands further forward of the ball and thus impart less “backspin” on the ball and therefore give it a better “roll”.
Most blade putters are “toe balanced” which can be an issue if you want a genuine pendulum stroke. The toe hangs down, to varying degrees, when you hold the putter at its balance point.
I have only ever seen one “faced balanced” offset putter, face of putter points straight up when held at the balance point. This putter was hand made by some top NZ guru, can’t remember his name.
Most center shaft putters are face balanced and tent to be better for the pendulum stroke…..disclaimer…...there are exceptions.

off set was bad for me..everything went left..as soon as i switched to putter that the face is in line with shaft everything went straight

I’m using an Odyssey XG9, I was using a Odyssey Xg1 and that was off set blade…..

i must have a pendulam swing then!

Yep, if you read Scotty Camerons blurb about toe balancing, a genuine pendulum putting stroke will have the toe of the putter closing on you with an offset putter, hence ball goes left.
There is another model Scotty, can’tremember the name but it is a “face balanced”, some say “shaft balanced”, don’t know why, which is for pendulum stroke….maybe its the “Detour”.

Further, the reason that most belly and longer putters don’t have offset shafts is because the expected stroke with this type of putter is pendulum.

I went from a two ball offset to a rife 2 bar mallet centre shaft, and found I have had to make a slight adjustment to physically move my hands forward, but that combined with a properly fitted lie angle and proper weighting and I am holing more puts than ever before and the roll I get from the rife is vey pure.
Happy I made the change

I’s the offset and plumber’s neck the same?

He seems to say there is less toe flow with the plumbers neck style.

Sarg, Im not sure about the plumbers neck, I have seen a bit of plumbers crack around the greens though, especially in the summer if my partners shorts are a little low slung,—not a good sight.

Go to http://www.guerinrife.com/d... and you will be able to see the difference between offset, plumbers neck, centre shafted and heel shafted.

have been using an offset 2 ball putter for the last few months and averaging 30 putts a game, for me this type of putter definitely releases the ball with better forward momentum. this helps a smooth putting stroke rather than a force which i was previously doing, but remember putting is all individual feel…..

relax & enjoy, it's just a game.......
