I started playing golf a few months back and have tried a lot of balls but none of them have felt any good to me.
So what is a good ball that may help me play better?

Cheers,
Jack

Precept Laddie,Nike Super Soft,Titleist NXT,Taylormade Red are all decent balls for someone who is new to golf get good distance and a little more spin than most of the other rocks,or you could just buy used prov1's which are more durable and better golf ball's than all the ones above.

What feels good? Hard, soft, don't care...?

Beware of cheap imitations - Especially from the US

Select 10 mid range balls at random and take them to the putting green. One of them will provide you with more instinctive distance control than the others. Use that one.

Worry about other playing characteristics later.

I just started the transition from hacker to saturday player at the start of this year and a local pro suggested I use the Titleist Solo. I bought some second hand off ebay for $1.50 a ball and really loved the feel of them. I like what packard is saying, at our level, finding a mid range ball that feels right to us is the way to go I think.

I buy callaways (HX red, HX Hots and Hx tour) for about 2 bucks a ball pretty much brand new (yes of ebay)...a 2 dollar Callaway is better value than a 2 dollar Titliest Pro VI in my view...

if your after a one dollar a ball job go for Srixon AD333 they are a great ball and can get them for about a dollar a smidgen above that.

I was told once by a pro to find the type of ball that feels right, ie hard or soft or in between, then the ball I can afford in that catagory. In a nutshell, play the most expensive ball you can afford. You get what you pay for with golf balls.

and when you find one that suits, stick with it...

I've been using cheap-a$$ balls for the past 3-4 years, and have stuck with them...so now, I know what I can (and cannot do) with the ball... smile.gif

I found DT SoLo's too hard and AD333 cut up too easily. NXT's are a good compromise - I use the Tour's.

I second that. I noticed a marked improvement once I started using second hand Titleist Pro V's. I have moved on to Callaway HX Tour's now but these balls are designed for what hackers need. Low spin off the driver and more spin around the green. We hackers dont hit the driver well so that the premium balls are designed for low spin off the driver is a benefit. Additionally, we dont hit too many greens in regulation therefore we are chipping alot. So the added feel and spin off the short irons with the premium balls is also a benefit.

So as bigsea said, use the best ball you can afford.

The Hx tour is actually designed for faster swing speeds...ie Phil Mickleson..

HX tour 56 suits moderate swing speeds

I have switched to the HX hot and HX red and they are better for a 100 mph swinger...the hx hots area great ball still good feel around the green...but increase speed off the driver

Might give them a try!

If you have only started, stop worrying about the ball. Any round whitish ball will do.

don't know about that...

But i've tried the Callaway HX tours, and to date have found those the best ball i've used. Long off tee, and feel nice off 8 and below.
But i have just picked up a couple (yep 2) of the Tit Pro V1. Should i directly compare these balls, or are they too different to compare directly??
Spose i want to know, if other think these are as good/better than the HX tours??
I want to compare apples to apples. Looking for a cheaper alterante to Callaways.

Hx hots are cheaper and just as good...the other ball I like is the srixon ad 333

I bought 60 prov 1s off the net for about $150. They are fantastic. Very soft around the greens and approach shots. The Callaway HX hot was long off the tee but I find I have no feeling putting with them. They are so hard (as in rock). Precept U-Tri tours are still on sale if you can find them for around the $40 mark. A mart allsports in Perth, Cannington have Srixon z-ur s for $40 a dozen. Hope I that helped smile.gif

played the ProV1's yesterday, best ball i've hit, so i'll be sticking with them. Can also get A grade 2nd's $30 doz, so that'll do me.

Sort of on topic - Do you guys think a top notch model which is a bit scuffed up (V1/callaway) would play better than a near new NXT or similar? ie how much do you think a scuff affects a ball?

(put another way - $1.25 to spend on a ball. Buy the near new or the slightly scuffed up top grade ball)

if you get the callaways V1's for 1.25, they probably aren't in the best nic. I get my (good condition, ie not VERY good, and but NOT scuffed) for $1.5 and apparently they are good buying for that price. So depending on the degree of scuff i suppose. It is always nicer to play new balls, but quality balls, have been a revolution to my game, i now just don't feel right if i cant get the feel of the ball of the club.

But hey, try them and compare.

Callaway HX Hot, Big Bertha, Warbird etc x 50 excellent

Was looking at these on ebay. Works out round $1.30 each. He also has some titleist and nike balls. What do you think?

PJS i bought a similar lot of 50 balls from a buyer "savenplay" on Ebay a few months ago as I liked the feel of (some) Callaway balls. The balls were great quality for the price but unfortunately were mainly CB1 (Blue/Red) and Big Bertha (Blue/Red) and Warbird which all felt too hard. I prefered the HX Hot and HX 2 piece or 3 piece. Therefore, while it was good value for $ I ended up using the balls I could and the other 40 balls became practice balls.

Its a great way to try out different Callaway balls for a good price.

I would recommend spending the extra and getting a specific ball type, eg $1.75-$2.50 a ball for Titleist A grade or HX 3 piece.

Or then again, I stumbled across the Srixion ZURS for $39 dozen brand new and love them. Very soft, still goes long and nice to putt with.

If buying used can someone tell me what the ratings mean, AAA, AA, etc.? and where do all these come from?

Are there some ratings you would just avoid in other words don't go below a certain rating...?

TW,

Last thing I want is a hard ball so took your advice against the callaway (till I try one i might find). Ended up buying a mix of mid-range top condition Nike. Should all be in good nick and will get to have a feel of a couple of different models. Worked out round 1/4 new price. (will let you know if theyre good)

I have a feeling AAA,AA is all rubbish, and totally dependent on the seller.
I definitely checked out any pics and read the descriptions. I also checked feedback of recent purchasers and clicked on the item number for that product (I did this on the -ves, and on comments where they said something specific about the quality).
When you do this you'll see there are a few sellers who advertise as near new, and the balls turn out to be scuffed. One seller seems to be really bad at misadvertising. I don't know yet for myself. Only just ordered my first lot of used balls.

Got the link to http://www.buygolfballs.com... from another thread and they list their top balls as A. Some on ebay say that is AAA, mint, or premium. A lot use B instead of AA. Thats why I ignore it.

So, I gather there really is no rating system.. I assume the more AAAA's they use the better the ball should be.

If you buy a used premium ball is there a longevity to it's usefulness? I realize on E-Bay it's buyer beware, I'm in the States has anyone had good or bad luck with certain sellers?

Thanks,
