Maximum club head size you would use

So it seems like clubheads are just getting bigger and bigger for drivers, so I was thinking about the maximum clubhead size I would use. I've just upgraded to the new Cobra SS350 which is 350cc in size, though the head is basically deeper than bigger. I never though I'd use a club that big but have found that I currently prefer it to my 312cc 975J driver. So, what is the biggest driver you have ever tried and what is the maximum size clubhead you would use on a regular basis?

I have trialled the XR03 (410CC), and the R360. Am currently using the 350CC Nike.
The XR03...while huge...looks good...becoz of the engineering
behind it...it just doen't look that bulky. Wouldn't mind
getting it, and I'm sure I'll adapt to it. I havent seen the SS350...but I'm comfortable with the Nike 350, so I guess it all comes down to they way the club looks from the top. Having said that tho...I think the Brosnan 360 got it wrong. Same with the C4. Colour of the club plays a huge part in this...

Biggest I have is a 400CC, usually use an Integra V Series 360cc
but I'm switching down to a TF340cc and a Tour 312cc, I find
the big heads are nice but they are too tempting to swing to dam
fast Cheers Ben

I tried out my mates R360 and I think thats big enough... I'm starting to feel my 975D is very small compared to the 'newer' drivers out today!

Hey Rusty ... What did u think of the R360? I've tried the R320 and loved it..but I think the 360 would be too big
|
|
Its all personal preference, I tried the R360 with a Harrison Pro Titanium 2.5 X Stiff, which is a bit too stiff. It was measured at 6.7 so its pretty damn stiff. Hit these cuts which looked awesome threw the air. Haven't tried the other R's, so can't really comment on them... You just gotta get used to the clubhead size...

Yeah I had a hit with a (tiny) 975D again the other week too Rusty and boy you notice the difference going back down to that size. Funny thing is it is still a very sweet club, kinda makes me wish I never got rid of mine. I had a hit with the TM360s and they were just too damn big for my liking.

The D's has to be one of the most popular clubs ever! They're still great, but with all these new drivers coming out, your lacking behind in distance and forgiveness...

Hindo,
I'd love to see you do a piece on comparing some component
drivers to some OEM ones Be

Excellent idea Ben. I'll be honest that I've not hit that many componenet drivers, three or four at most, so it would probably make for an interesting article. A friend of mine had a TF360 and I quite liked that, wrong shaft for me mind you, but the feel was good. Where are you located, maybe logictics would be an issue in making it happen. PM me and maybe we can discuss some details. Can't swing a club for another 3 weeks so it would need to be after that. I know you weren't having a go at me or anything like that, but I just want to point out that I'm not anti-component clubs, just never had a problem playing/paying for OEM clubs. I do, however, disagree with the idea that they clone the design of OEM clubs, but that's another issue altogether.

Hi Peoples, I've used drivers from 330 up to 400cc,recently purchased a Cobra gravity back driver, no offset8.5 deg stiff graphite(paid $200.00 new for it "bargain")i think these clubs are about 265cc.The fairway woods i own are also gravity back and i love them anyway the driver is by far the best club i have ever purchased.Never before have i hit consistantly long and straight by long i mean either an 8-9 iron on the par 4s into the green(thats great for my experience).I'm not sure wether the face on these clubs are like the new drivers out there v.f.t but the smaller head in these drivers makes them feel like a 3wood and everyone loves hitting their 3 woods so maybe it's more between the ears.

Obviously the game of golf is a passion of mine - if not, why
would I bother even continuing playing it - but more so, golf
equipments. I don't know why, but I'm always fascinated
to learn more about new club releases, and getting feedback from
other sources on the performances. What else can I do - as it
would be a very very expensive hobby!!! anywayz, I played a comp round yesterday (had 36 points, 22 and 14) and one of my partners had a 975D 12.5, and I forgot how good these clubs look...even with the smaller head. So I totally agree with Choc's decision in his purchase of the Cobra driver (they were good drivers). So I'm looking to probably purchase a 975D 9.5 with a stiff shaft as keepsake - most probably use it as well of coz. I have hit the J, was impressed, but I think the D will be a better buy now. The Jaster uses this, and I'm very impressed with what he's able to extract from it.
Anywayz, what's the averge price for this now? Of the top of
my head, I think I can get a new one for $450. Too much or a
bargain? I'll keep on dreaming, Santa might think I've been a good boy this year, and get me both.

Yesterday I went into the local House of Golf store and they had a new driver called 'The Animal'. The club head is 600cc!!. Picked it up on it looks like a shoe box on the end of the shaft. You would almost be embarrsed to take it to the course.

Marcus,
I used to have an Integra Soo Long 600cc... looked like boral
cast a brick outa titanium... I reckon anything over 400cc is too
much Ben

I agree. There has to be a point where the size of the head actually does more harm to your swing than good. I realise that they are light with the Titanium but surely there is some wind resistence.

When I first got the ERC II the thing was enormous. Now I am test driving the R580 and the ERC looks small. It's all relative.

Would be interesting to see how people now think. This posting was way back in 2002. I still use a Srixon 360cc but there are lots of 450+ clubs out there. What do you use now?
|
|
Is this too big?? The club on the right is you garden variety 400cc driver.

Curse the usga, and there 460cc max size, max c.o.r. limit the balls not the clubs
Watch out typos + poor grammar. |

I have used 460CC since they became available, they are more forgiving simple as that. all the pros use 460 (even Tiger) so why would higher handicappers than them use a smaller head, makes no sense to me
so John (Daly) how did you make a 14?....well i missed the putt ior a 13 dickhead |

450 Nike ignite. Man it looks big next to my 300cc 3wd. But i have hit plenty of smaller and larger. I still love my driver, but I love to nick my mates old 2wd little slammer and belt the crap out of a few, it tiny! still hits over 200….
It's the only game in the world where you can call penalty on yourself. It's the greatest game there is. |

geez i remember those persimmon drivers and the laminate ones also! beautiful looking stuff. and you had to swing well also! no forgiveness at all
putt,putt,putt,pftt.

A few months back I ewnt out and played 18 holes with my old mans clubs (yep the ones covered in spder webs from his shed..woods made out of wood) and old ben hogan blades just for some fun played ok not briliant with them too, what i did notice though is that a few days later when i played with my clubs again I hit them really well, best score in ages. But I concntrated really hard and told myslef that I cant miss hit this or it will be no good, using the same thinking as using the old mans clubs I had an 81 ( I play off 13) so that was great but i think we gett lulled into thinking with big headed clubs that we just have to stand there and hit it and the club is so forgiving it will just go straight. Playing with the old clubs is something i will do again as it was making me concentrate harder knowing there was much less margin for error.
so John (Daly) how did you make a 14?....well i missed the putt ior a 13 dickhead |
