50 Degree Gap Wedge

I've recently added a Vokey 50degree wedge into the bag (borrowed from the kid), and dropped the 53 gappie...

Still trying to get use to it (full shot and chipping)...but this club is all wrong for me...
this particular vokey is too upright for me, and I tend to lose my shots to the left...

anyway...any1 else has a 50 in the bag???

I put it in coz the gap btw the E (46) and the G (53) was just too much for me around my course...

not too many OEMs have 50 wedges...RAC, Cally V, Vokey and Tourneys are the only ones I've seen... unsure.gif

Mau,

I had 3 Vokeys at one stage -48, 54, 60. Tried really hard to like them but couldn't. I have gone back to the Ping PW and have a pair of Cleveland Tour Satin Chrome 588's. They are a dramatically better wedge. I found the Vokeys to be harsh.

Got a Cally 54 bent to 51 to fill the gap between my 46 degree PW and my 56 degree SW.
I can hit it about 100m with an easy swing and its great for pitch and runs. cool.gif

have a look in bargin bins for Ben Hogan Forged wedges. They are very simple and clean cut forged wedges and are a bit heavier than vokeys. I carry vokeys but will get hogans when the budget permits it. Should be about 125-150 or so and a excellent wedges for the price.

I don't think they come in a 50 degree but the 52 degree gap is beautiful and can be easily bent to a 50 degree gap wedge.

Check em out

sigs are back – YAY

thanks...

as soon as my tourney comes tomorrow, I'm sending the vokey back to the Kid...

and if the tourney doesn't work out...I'll keep on searching for the F wedge for the AEPs... sad.gif

Mau - I've got a McGregor MT forged 50 deg - magic. I've found it slots in distance wise at a better spot than a 52, and great for chipping. I think it's at about -7 deg bounce, plus it can easily be bent if required

just got it today...50degree, 4degree bounce...
looks great...
head looks smaller than the vokey, which is already a HUGE plus...
and yes...the toe doesn't stick up... biggrin.gif

I've got a Cleveland 51 -588.Much smoother than a 50 Vokey
that I also have.

played 9,

used it twice on full shots...
fatted the first shot into 3...but felt okay...
another approach into the 7th...felt great, hangtime was awesome, and the ball actually spun back, from a very grassy lie too...

chipped with it twice...on the 2nd... unsure.gif
much much better than the Vokey...no contest...

do have a problem with the thin and slippery grip...YUCK!!!

I've been carrying one all year...I've got the 48° PW from the orignial 822 set but then have a 52°, 56° and a 60° Carbite Tour Insert Forged wedges in the bag. I've also got a 64° Feel Dart Thrower that goes in on rare occassion if course conditions call for it.

Unlike previous years I have gotten away from full swing wedge shots if the course allows for 1/4 and 1/2 swing runners. From 20 yards all the way up to 140 yards in 10 yard increments I have developed 1/4 swing shots with my LW through 6 iron. Making this change has dramtically changed my short game accuracy and ability. I improved on average about 10 stokes this year just by making that change. All other areas of my game probably remained similar. Once I added that to my game the more wedges in my bag the better as it allows for that much more yardage precision without adjusting or changing your basic 1/4 swing.

The reason for the Carbite Tour Insert wedges is due to the fact they were one of the best forged wedges made and once Carbite Golf went belly up I was able to pick up a bunch of these wedges with Rifle shafts for $5 to $20 US. Payne Stewart and Fred Couples was playing these wedges at one point.

I was after an Apex Plus F (50°) wedge for some time but they are difficult to find. Every now and then one or two pops up on ebay in the US but I've been outbid on several occasions.

I ditched my E (48°) and I've been happy with the following:

Gap - Clev 588 56° bent down to 51.5 (I use this for just about everything between 80m and 110m).
SW - Vokey 256 08 - can't remember the spec only that it didn't have much bounce and I like it off the grass for anything from 80m down to 40m.
LW - Hogan 5610 bent to 58.5, this is my sandy/lobber. All greenside sand shots plus the 40m and under shots (except hard/thin lies where it's back to the Vokey).

Once in a while I still find my self in a tight spot so I recently bought a Hogan Riveria (5208) and I plan to bend that down to 49° as I've got a problem between say 105m and 120m. They make a 5008 but I got the 52 very cheap on ebay in the US - wedges go very cheap over and I find that for less than $A100 you can land a good wedge.

I moved away from my E becuase found that I like the heavier wedges.

So, in answer to your ? I've been trying to move to a 50ish for some time and when the Riviera arrives I'll be there. Say goodbye to the 3 iron.

yes...the F in the AEP is a PITA to find...

what model do you have??? coz the E in the Edge Pros are 46degree, not 48degree...

Mau

You're correct. My Apex Plus' are similar to the current FTX and they should be E-46, 9-42. I had my 9 bent to 44 after ditching the E that I seldom used. Take a look at the Carnoustie, Riveria and Colonial wedges. There have been some very cheap ops on ebay and you can bend them 3-4°. I never could pick a favourite on wedges and ended up with Vokey, Clev and Hogan. I still don't think you can beat Hogan irons for feel. I played with IPTs and PT3's as a kid and they've always felt as smooth as butter.
