My new JPX 825 Pro's?

I have just purchased a set of Mizuno JPX 825 Pros 4-PW – lovely looking clubs, much more forgiving than what I had been playing and with a really nice feel.

I hope I have made the right decision with regard to shafts though.

Some background; I haven’t been swinging very well lately and have been in a funk for a while. I’ve been having lessons again and slowly getting the swing back. I had been using Razr X Forged with Project X Flighted 5.5 which was punishing my scores somewhat. So as a treat to myself I purchased the Mizuno’s.

I was fitted on the Optimizer originally with the following results for 6 iron, 78MPH swing speed, Dynalite XP R300 and KBS Tour Regular. I tried both shafts in reg and stiff flex and the one that had the tighter dispersion, best distance (only by a few yards) and best feel was the XP R300.

A few days later I had a go at the Optimizer again with the following results for 6 iron, 81MPH swing speed, Dynalte XP S300 soft stepped and KBS Tour Stiff. I tried the Dynalite XP in reg and stiff and once again the R300 had the tighter dispersion best distance (only by a few yards) and best feel. Mind you I had been hitting balls every day for 3 or 4 days between the first and second fittings – this is not usually the case. Normally I will hit the range once a week and the course once a fortnight.

On the launch monitor the ball didn’t seem to balloon with the R300, spin looked good and launch looked good so I went with the R300’s.

On the course over 18 holes however I noticed a loss of distance of 10-20m on my previous irons despite the Mizuno’s been stronger lofted. It didn’t look as though the ball ballooned or dropped out of the sky but the distance loss obviously bothered me. I put it down to a combo of poor swing, new irons, perhaps the little bit of wind that was around.

Anyway, the next day I took both my new irons and old irons to the range and found that the new irons despite being a weaker flex and stronger loft were in fact 5 or so metres shorter than my old irons. The difference in the dispersion was massive though. With The Razr X forged I’d have to line up right of target and hit a big pull where as with the JPX 825 I could line up right at target and the ball would go relatively straight… the ball flight was a tad lower with the PX shafts than the XP’s.

So I guess my questions are:

Could it be the pull shot that is giving me that extra yardage with my old irons?
Could it be the slightly lower ball flight with the older irons giving me more run?
Or is it just a breaking in period that I need to go through?

My other fear is that once my swing starts to get back to where it was and I start to hit down on the ball rather than flip through impact (as I have been doing) that perhaps the Dynalite XP R300 shafts will be to soft and I will be up for a re-shaft.

Do any higher swing speed players play reg flex over stiff?

If my swing speed with 6 iron gets up to say 85 or 86 can I still get away with playing a regular flex shaft?

Heaps to digest I know but any advice/feedback would be appreciated?

Thanks.

To offer a suggestion for part of your question, during a lesson I noticed my pulls went further. I was told that coming across the ball out to in, with a closed face, I was delofting the club – hence they would go longer and lower (albeit left).

I am sure there are a lot of people better qualified to answer though.

Cheers,
Ben

most would be happy with this.
esp during a funk (what ever that is)

Hi mate

I use the DG XP300 also in regs in set of MP 53’s

swing speed is similar – maybe smidgen higher

I have yinged and yanged – the same as you also between regs and stiff in some shafts

I tried the KBS and NS pros (hell I tried about 15 different shafts in the mizuno fitting cart)

The KBS felt better but the ends result was the DG XP R300 performed marginally better interms of accuracy and distance

lower kick point will do that!

So I then I talked the mizuno fitting guy (hes rep for mizuno as well) who happens to be a member here also and he plays off 3 and knows his stuff. He actually said the DG XP R300 plays stiffer than the standfard DG R300 even though the XP is about 12-15 grams lighter

a lighter shaft DOES NOT mean softer! That is a myth and mizuno guy confirmed this.

he plays the XP in his shafts S300…he swing at I reckon about 90 mph with a 6 iron. He loves the XP

OK the DG XP was designed specifically for mizuno – he said it comes down to feel, mizuno heads are often smidgen ligher than many irons and smidgen lighter shafts suits (I thought it would be the other way around too) he thinks 115 gram shaft for irons is spot on for many players.

He also thinks there is far too many guys using heavy iron shafts that have no benefit for them as we discussed this.

OK he said of all the guys hes fitted hes found the XP to have achieved really good results with many players from low markers to high cappers.

end result I’m a fan of the XP’s and so is the Mizuno rep.

Golf is only a game…Yeah right who are you kidding?

Thanks Dave. Just one thing, are you playing dynamic gold xp or dynalite gold xp shafts in your 53s?

Hey mate, go to www.truetemper.com to compare the different shafts, basically it comes down to weight and how they are stepped.

I agree with Rob that a sacrifice of a few metres for the accuracy you are getting is an acceptable result!

Except I’m not the longest hitter to begin with.

I was 10 to 20 meters shorter on the course in my first outing….And only about 5 meters shorter at the range a few days later.

I used to get 150m out of my old 6 iron….. Now I don’t know if I’m going to get 130 or 145 out of my new one.

Buy game improvement irons you get a hotter face in spots,

To be fair, I think my distances will be back once I sort out some swing flaws that have crept in over the past few weeks…well I hope so anyway.

If i can get back to hitting 6 irons to 150 consistently then I’ll be happy….. Gotta get rid of the flip thru impact and the reverse pivot that creeps in far too often.

There is no logical reason why more forgiving heads with stronger lofts and shafts that were fitted to my swing speed, transition, etc shouldn’t be just as long as the razr x forged project x flighted 5.5 irons I had been using.

dynalite XP is lighter than the standard DG XP

dynalites are around 105 grams..standard XP is 115 ot there abouts

standard DG are 125-128

Just from my experience when I got my MP53s I also lost a lot of distance when the arrived and for the first few weeks/months but I think it was just a settling in period maybe a slight tempo variation because I regained those original distances or very close to them.

I’m sure it will return as you get used to your new clubs.

My MP 53’s are asmidgen shorter than my previous cobra MB’s

but for me its control, the flight on the MP 53 wasa tad lower which meant maybe 2 or 3 meters lost but I play in the wind so controlling the ball for me is the key

In really windy conditions I’m often hitting knock down shots with 8 iron from 100 meters…so like I said I look at the shot – what trajectory do I want

the higher I hit the more the wind will grab it….for me contol is everything – takes spin off the ball also

I often shape shots (with sideways winds) and I find it’s easier with controlled swing to than trying to rip every iron

I found when I went back to mid weighted regs (DG Xp’s) I controlled the ball better.

I’m a fan of the Xp’s

+1 to this.

I would take the loss of 5-10 metres if I could be on the green more often than not with my irons. Accuracy Accuracy Accuracy all the way!

Ok I demoed the JPX 825 pros today on the range – hit all the irons…

result: I’m going to buy a set of these, thought I’d mention it here also

these irons are just hot off the face and sweet to hit

No practice time at all as JOB is madness so I need forgivness
