Club length irons

Who said anything about being 6* out? I wish people would read what’s actually written. If club fitting is done by trial and error of hitting balls, then if I hit the Honma 9i more consistently then the Mizzy, doesn’t that mean it suits me better now? Let’s look at; 1 attack angle; can you train a steeper or shallower attack? What factors influence the ideal attack for someone? 2 shaft flex; obviously this can change, what difference does it make to the length? 3 hand action at impact; can you train various hand actions? 4 shaft torque; what affect does this have on length? So there are many more, yes. But a list doesn’t tell me WHY anything influences choice of length.

Calm big fella – it’s hard to give an essay on club length fitting when I’m copying and pasting Skype posts! Just trying to help.

Are you hitting it better than the mizuno 6 iron or 9 iron?

Ha, I’m calm Weeties, always, you know me! The thing is, I just want to see if someone actually has a good answer for why anyone would need to be an inch over standard. Does anyone know someone who for example plays an inch under (that isn’t a junior or Kiwi’s height). Maybe let’s try this. 1. What issues may a player have if clubs are too short? 2. What issues may a player have if clubs are too long?

Last week, I hit Brownies 9i during a game, so warmed up on my Mizzies. I hit his standard length 9i, 2* flat, straight over the pin and flew the green just a solid punch type shot too, not a full swing, after hitting a similar shot to the front of the green with my 9i. I hit his 7i straight and his 2i about 200 left FW. He can attest to good ball flight etc. Mind you I didn’t hit the Mizzies bad, I was striking it ok. Thing is, I felt the shorter stick had me having to stay down in the shot and tighten up my swing a little. Maybe it was just the extra focus due to hitting foreign sticks, who knows? Time will tell with these I’ve just got, I’m going to play them for a while with no adjustment and just see how I go, it’s the best way to see for myself. Proof will be in the cake (Goldy prefers cake to pudding)

Shorter shafts From my experience, none. I have a set of 40yo clubs that are one inch shorter per iron than modern clubs. The only thing to note is the lie angle is comparatively more upright per iron to compensate for the shorter shaft. Basically a 5 iron in the old is almost identical to the modern 6. So I rethink the distances per number on the bottom of the club and hit a 5 iron from 150m. The scorecard doesn’t care : ) Longer Shafts Again pretty much no issues as long as the lies are flatter per club. The only issue I have found with longer clubs is the difficulty of hitting the very longest iron in the middle of the club face. It just gets too far away from me to be practical.

Don’t want to go down the popcorn path either, but need the background to answer your question fully, if I’m going to give the total truth about why the big difference between your two sets of clubs. 39.5” versus 37.5” is huge and Mizuno would never make a set of irons at that length, unless it was demanded by the client.

Stink,I think I may have told you that they were in fact a tad under standard according to mate at Drumms, the one thing I have found over the yrs is that the slightly shorter clubs usually hit better”for me”,I have always thought that while they are shorter than modern day clubs,I feel that I have better control than the longer ones,I have the Ping eye 2s that are longer ,but the honmas were more controllable,Ive had clubs that hit a lot longer but never as accurate, carnegie clarkes were much longer”shaft length and dist” but were not as straight. I bought them back twice,I think Ive bought Honmas back 2-3 times

Your height and arm length give the club maker an indication only of the correct length.

what people sometyomes forget is that longer shafts are heavier…every inch is about 10 grams that said shafts too short are stiffer also um…get fitted Driver however I reckon with some reseacrh you can fit yourself (especially with so much adjustability in the drivers these days) irons – get fitted…irons deg upright or flat can make huge difference so can one inch too long or short..get fitted for your irons
Golf is only a game…Yeah right who are you kidding? |

Some interesting points Golfduck, thanks.

Stink – sounds look you got more distance with a shorter stick. What are the lofts on the same numbered sticks?

http://www.1irongolf.com/?g... Lifted from the FAQ section of this website: Why are conventional golf clubs different lengths? Golf clubs were custom built to the same club lengths (irons all the same length and fairway type woods all the same length) prior to the introduction of steel shafts (invented in 1910 and legalized in 1926). Prior to that time hickory shafts were the norm and golf clubs were custom fitted/built to a single-length within a set based upon the static measurements of the individual golfer (wrist-to-floor measurement). The advent of the steel shaft changed all of this since sets of golf clubs could now be mass produced very cheaply in factories using unskilled workers. Large sporting goods manufacturers, lured by the huge untapped market for inexpensive sets of golf clubs, jumped in to bring golf to the masses. The only stumbling block was that they could not mass produce these sets while providing single-length custom fitting for each individual customer. The solution came when it was decided to abandon a proper custom fitting entirely and instead simply incorporate a 1/2 inch incremental step progression between successive irons and woods. That way, regardless of the size of the customer, there would be one or two clubs within a set that would come close to fitting anyone who purchased them (a boon to mass production but a detriment to the unsuspecting golfer). In other words, the incremental lengths in a set of conventional golf clubs today are the result of a profit motivated mass production decision made in the 1920’s and not based upon any golfing performance criteria whatsoever. It should be noted that hickory shafted golf clubs were also mass produced to a much lesser degree in the 1920’s and 1930’s and is why you may find some of these antique sets with varying club lengths.

Maybe then we should find our optimum length, then mostly play that club with various length shots. Perhaps this is why many on my 3 club challenge actually scored ok, as we just don’t need all these different lengths in our bag!

I used to love hitting my 8 iron, so just for kicks I found a 2 iron head and threw an 8 iron shafts in it and took it out for a hit….. It’s now one of favourite clubs in the bag to hit. Only goes about 10m in the air, and only goes around 160m before it hits the ground. But man doesn’t it run like a scolded cat when it does land!! And goes straight!! Is hard to slice or hook a ball that doesn’t get anymore than 10m in the air!!

Believe it or not, the first time I used it in a comp round, a bloke I was playing with actually was trying to tell me it wasn’t in the spirit of the game and I shouldn’t be using it!! By the end of the round, and after hitting 2 of the par 5’s in 2 shots (using it off the tee, then off the deck) he’d changed his mind and wanted me to make him one!! Oh, by the way, I never changed the lie angle and it works just fine!! ;)
