Hello could someone please help me out? I want to buy a gps but have no idea about them i ws looking at the Sureshot micro300x for $170 or the Garmin Approach G3 $129. or is there something else around that price range that is better? any help would be great

Thanks

Every man and his dog on iseekgolf has a garmin g3. They work pretty well. Check the thread out back on the equipment page.

The only downside to the garmin is that it runs on 2 x AA batteries. I get about 3 rounds out of a set. Invest in a pair of rechargable batteries and you’re sweet.

As a cricketer the Coverdrive was the hardest shot to master. As a golfer, I can achieve it with frustrating regularity.

+1 on the Garmin and the rechargeables. They seem to last longer too.
I find the aa a bonus as they’re readily available and cheap if you forget a charger.

Great thanks guys jb here I come :)

I have a Sonocaddie with a removable lithium battery. When I get home from golf, I plug in a usb cable from the PC until it’s recharged. Easy peasy.

I have a spare battery and other usb chargers for when I go away.

Cheaper the better. You will find that the yardages on the GPS can be 5 – 10m out. Eventually as you get better you should consider spending the money on a range finder.

FWIW- I bought the Garmin, but will eventually upgrade to the range finder. Just depends on how long it takes to improve….

Handicap, I’m working on it. – Edit: Feb 2013 still, working on it.

If you’re really serious, you will buy a Sonocaddie.

Recently purchased a SS 700x on the Pro’s recommendation.

Simple to use, has the carry distances for everything. Sure it doesn’t have a pretty “hole view”, but I really only play my course, so I know the layout, so it’s no issue for me.

Good unit, once I get into single figures (13 Hcp), ill grab a rangefinder.

I have the Garmin G3. I don’t think it’s too far out either by the way. I usually play with a guy with a rangefinder.

My GPS would usually be within 1-2 metres of what he reads on his rangefinder. Until I can hit within that accuracy I’ll happy all the way to the Bank with my $129 GPS

You might struggle to get your hands on a G3, i went to JB yesterday to pick one up during their 20% off gps sale, and the assistant told me that they only have demo models left in all their stores. Said he could sell me theirs for $69, but it was scratched up so i passed, came home and bought the G6 from Golfsmith instead.

Hi guys,

Recently returned to golf so please forgive the ignorance, my question, are GPS or rangefinders permitted in general comp play?

I’m keen to purchase one and played a social round with a fellow club member who used a GPS and he said he really finds it essential to his game.

Any feedback welcomed.

Cheers,

LTI.

no probs using a gps or rangefinder, just make sure the range finder doesn’t have slope built into the measurements as they are illegal in comp.

Big thanks KS, looking at something simple like the SureShot and to keep things pretty simple for distance.

I laugh at some of the guys I’ve been partnered with regarding their ‘estimates’...

Over inflated driving distances appear to be the norm in golf and put simply, most guys I’ve played with have no idea on anything inside 120-140mtrs.

I rely on my opinion on all my shots, but it does give a good laugh when listening within the group when they talk about their shots.

LTI, the current regulations require the club to have in place a local rule permitting the use of Distance Measuring Devices.

It would be very unusual if your club has NOT done that.

Thanks OB and will ask at the club later in the week.

I might be wrong but it is worth checking this before you dive in.

I believe that measuring devices are legal ONLY if the club has passed a rule allowing them in their club comps. Having said that i would be surprised to find a club that didnt allow them in these modern times, but golf, golfers and golf clubs DO continually surprise me. There would normally be a note on either back of the card or the local rules board. feel free to howl me down if i am wrong

Also you might consider checking to see if the unit you are interested in has the ability for you to “re-map” a point or hole. The reason many of the units are 5-15 metres out is often that they havent been mapped correctly. I bought a Bushnell hybird ( GPS/Laser in one unit) and had to remap my own course plus added a few creek crossings, etc that werent featured. I have had no problems since i did the remapping

also remember that the distance given by a GPS and a laser will be different on hilly terrain. The GPS measures a flat distance looking down from a satellite whilst the laser takes into account the true distance from point to point which will be greater on a sloping location

Big thanks HCWT, all good points and certainly the laser aspect being taken into account wasn’t something I’d even given thought.

I will also speak to my fellow member who used a GPS (Sureshot) in our social round and see if he finds it accurate to our course and also if he has “re-mapped”. He’s a 5-marker so I would like to think he’d have some good feedback to the various questions also.
