I currently have a small set of club which include a driver, 3 wood 3,5,7,9 irons sw and a putter . I have just purchased a 3 hybrid of ebay but wobdering which other clubs should I have ?

I may have i higher score then you but atleast i get to hit the ball more times

Donski, you can add another 6 clubs to your collection, but if they feel different, it won’t help.

It’s not just a matter of matching the flex labels, it’s more involved than that.

You haven’t provided any indication of your golfing ability. Have you recently started and are looking to improve? Do you smash them like a pro?

Help the knowledgeable punters in here with some info.

My golfing ability needs alot of improvement, only just started playing, had my first hit at the driving range at the start of january and my first round about mid january.

You pretty much have the reccomended starter set.

The quality of the set though is what I would be concerned with.

Quality is probably an issue aswell as most of the set only cost me $16.50 on ebay

Don’t worry too much about it donski, you’ve got what you need to get started…over the next few months, you’ll find out if you really are keen on golf, then you can decide if you want to get upgrade to a better set or not…go get lessons man, it will be the quickest way to improving.

As wizard_of_oz said, practice more often, play more often, and get some lessons. Its the best way to improve your game.
As boring as that sounds (we would all like to lash out on a new set of clubs), its the best advice, and if you do get lessons, then ask the coach about what to look for in a new set of clubs. He would be the best informed person to advise you, having seen your game and knowing your swing.

Only I’ve seen some blokes go and buy starter irons from a junk shop or the tip. Grips slick and hard. Bladed heads. God only knows what flex shaft. Making life unnecessarily difficult.

You’ve probably got one more than you really need : )

3 wood 3,5,7,9 irons sw and a putter sounds about perfect, chuck in the hybrid for good measure. I know a couple of single digit golfers who play with that combination.

This space for rent.

yep the good old “cash converter” set

any one else heading home to get married??

Donski, most in here would recommend that you get fitted for clubs that will suit your swing. The problem is that, until you have developed your swing enough for it to be stable and reliable, the fitter has very little to assess and work with. It’s a chicken & egg thing.

Pay a visit to the pro where you usually play and get his view on whether your current clubs are within a bull’s roar of something suitable. If they are a poor match, then you will have difficulty achieving anything worthwhile with them. On the other hand, you shouldn’t outlay a packet on a new set until you’ve got a decent swing.

If you really get into it, get some short game lessons and buy some matching wedges. The quickest way to lower your scores is via the short game. Would start with a 52 and 56.

Good luck.

ok thanks guys but this does add a couple more questions.
Has anyone had lessons at bacchus marsh golf club? or melton driving range?

How often are lessons recomended? was thinking once a month

How much would it cost to get fitted and get a basic set? Just a ball park figure so i can start saving

I would suggest a fortnight or monthly basis.

Basically, most pros give you some set up advice and some advice on how to pitch. Go away and practice for 2 weeks or so. Return. Get some full shot advice. Return 2 weeks later for some more. Then maybe monthly. Often, a 10 pack of lessons can be bought.

Group lessons are more affordable. Often you can do a group lesson every week or fortnight.

That initial 1 on 1 lesson is often quite handy.

1. Lessons, 2-3 times in the first month if you can afford it
It’s sooooo worth it

2. Buy a pack of 10 100 balls at the local driving range

3. Practice

4. Get the hollow practice plastic balls for home, practice

5. Practice

6. Play matches with a mate, nothing compares to game day play

7. Get clubs you like – I played awfully with corporate day loan clubs for 2 years, got my own now and I’m a different player, upgrade as you get better
