Just thinking about an upgrade from my sure shot 8850. What have people had good and bad experiences with?

Never argue with an idiot, they will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I’m using the Bushnell Pro 1M at the moment.

Can’t fault it. Was expensive though.

I’ve also used the Bushnell Tour V2 (which I believe has been superseded now) which was a nice unit as well… Might be able to pick up one of those pretty cheap if you look around.

All in all though – I prefer my rangefinder over my GPS every day of the week.

Have a look at this thread and this thread and this thread. That’ll be a good start.

go the laser mate

long, short, left and right = ALL FINGERED

Yep, rangefinders are much more versatile than GPS devices, and no ongoing costs (aside from batteries) I’ve also got the Leupold.

I’ve own and use both, but the range finder is hands down more accurate that the GPS. Keep you 8850 and get a rangefinder.

Both devices have their places.

I recently played with two guys with Bushnell V2 lasers & on one hole they couldn’t lock onto the flag because the trees behind the green were moving with the wind.

OP I can understand why you might want to update your range finding equipment. Up until recently I had an 8850. It’s an excellent GPS but the controls on it are a bit cumbersome & it has no flyover view of the course like the new GPS devices. I sold it to buy a Garmin G3 & I’m more than happy.

By the way, don’t listen to guff that GPS devices are inaccurate. In my recent round with the two guys with Bushnell V2 lasers, the Garmin was either the same as or no more than one metre difference from their readings.

Good luck with your search mate.

Thanks for the replies I agree the range finder may not be more accurate but more flexible I think it might be. The eBay job looks like A good. Cheap option.

there’s always the bushnell combo unit.
the gps and the laser both get very good reviews and as a combo the units seems very good.

just don’t get sucked in by the RANGEMASTER advertisements you might see around (including on this site). I have one, it does not do what it suggests it should do and there is absolutely no response from their customer service – in Sydney.

How is that possible, does your gps pick up the flag?

Onscreen pin can be moved (onscreen) to apparent location of the real pin. More accurate than simple front, centre & rear of green measurements.

But I’m not going to get into a pissing contest about “which one is better”. Each to their own.

I have a ‘little more than basic’ gps which works well. I also have an el cheapo laser which does the job excellently.

My method is a quick glance at the gps to give me a centre-of-green reading, then use the laser for a precise distance reading. Having checked with the gps, I know roughly what to expect from the laser and so will know if I’ve stuffed the reading.

I have the Bushnell Hybrid, Yes it cost me $440 – but It’s a GPS & Rangefinder in one device. It’s simply brilliant – best of both worlds!

Yes you can spend $300 on an el’cheapo – but why not save another $100 or so, it’s worth it in my opinion as you get what you pay for! I’ve gone down the cheap road – not anymore. I now buy the best(trusted brand with a good rep) I can afford and buy it once!

My $2

“If Ben Hogan saw that, he’d puke…”

+1 for this one.

I’ve compared mine to a couple of (much) more expensive rangefinders and it’s not been more than a couple of meters difference.
And who’s to say that theirs aren’t the ones who are not totally accurate…..?

Rockbottomgolf have the bushnell v2 for $270 landed. They have 3 left I think.

Mine’s plain black, and was $10 cheaper a year ago.

Half that.

Half what OB?

Go laser, dropped a few strokes when getting better yardages/meterages?? is there such a word? really helps on courses with the bigger deeper greens, and another benefit is if your mates don’t have one you can supply them with dodgy distances , not that I would do that to collect the beer cash on a game….........

Half what OB?

Half the $300. It was $150. The gps was a little more than that, but I’ve had it for a few years now.

Anal…....

Bahahahaha
