Are my clubs too short (vid)

Hi guys, Novice golfer here trying to get good! I recently bought some clubs, starting with a set of TM Burner 2.0 irons and a Cobra Amp fairway wood. It just seems that the shafts are way to short for me. I’m 6.7 tall and feel that I have to hunch over to properly hit the ball. Could I have them lengthened or should I reshaft. A friend suggested that I be fitted but mentioned that I would only be able to get Mizuno irons for my lenght? Can someone here tell me what’s the deal? Thanks! http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Nope your legs are too long….. .....actually the club your hitting doesn’t look rediculously short and you don’t look that hunched over but yeah a professional would sort it out. Just about any brand can be made longer, they just don’t trim the shafts as much. HG are specialist at it : )

Tell us what part of the country you live/work in and someone will know of a competent fitter not too far away. At 6’7”, you probably do need longer clubs than standard. The existing clubs can be fitted with shaft extenders, although that will change the swing weight. Extending much more than an inch is not recommended (maybe 1½”) is not recommended because too much strain is placed on the glued join which can break down. All clubs can be re-shafted with longer shafts and you can then get shafts that suit your swing characteristics. But as a novice, determining suitable shafts can be difficult because your swing is probably all over the place – not ‘bedded in’. At your height, I would expect that you also have large hands and the standard skinny grips will be wrong for you. When you grip the club, the ring finger of your left hand (right handed golfer) should barely skim your thumb pad. Grips can be padded out with extra ‘papers’, but new, jumbo grips may be better. So, what you need is a good club fitter who can cover all bases. Not the shop assistant at your local retail golf shop. You could be lucky there and get someone who actually knows what they’re doing, but the odds are against that.

Swing looks pretty good for a novice. But as GSP said, lesson first. You don’t look hunched over, just too close to the ball. Your woods should be ok at standard length but you will most likely need extended irons.

Carry two bags with 6 bricks in each for a month, this should make your arms longer.

One of the famous golfers from days long gone said something like “you can’t stand too close to the ball”.

You need to get fitted, but a quick observation would be standard length will be to short, I am 6Ft 5” tall and my clubs fitted are 1”+ on standard so I would expect yours to be that at least. You can get shaft extenders or plugs initially and then when your swing has matured I would suggest re-shft or new clubs. (Just my preference I do not like the shaft extenders)

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Had my irons extended by quite a bit, 1.5”. Liking the result, especially on the short irons 7-sw. Jury is still out on 6 iron and lower, struggling but dont know why yet. All in all a good mid term solution before I get myself fitted. For the people recommending I take lessons, promised myself to never take lessons after seeing Bubba play. Teachers just confuse me, always have! Thanks again people!

“For the people recommending I take lessons, promised myself to never take lessons after seeing Bubba play. Teachers just confuse me, always have!” And this is why you look lanky and cant hit it straight…

Haha knew that this was coming! As long as I’m enjoying my golf game and improving I’m alright…

Custom fit clubs might help you quite a bit. But I am also certain you could achieve a more comfortable set up. You look like a great dane screwin a rabbit.

I would recommend gettng a lesson. I’m also new to the game and recently had my first lesson and it has helped my game alteady.

Time for an update. The $120 spent on the shaft extensions was the best investment in golf ever. Feel much more comfortable at address and less ‘crumpled’ up when swinging my irons. As a result my arms are far more stretched upon impact, my body more upright and my club speed has increased dramatically. The dynamics are just so much better now. I hit longer (~150 meter with 7 iron) and straighter and much higher too. Low ball trajectory was always an issue for me, to a point where I could not get a 3 wood airborne, only a 5 wood. Not a problem anymore, nor is a 4-iron. I make sure I keep my hands removed from the crotch area, basically letting my arms hang down perfectly vertical. This makes more sense to me. Might shoot a new video at some point. Thanks for the input everyone.

Me hitting a wedge. This used to be a nightmare, it felt I was hitting a golfball with a toothpick, but with the extra 3 centimetres it really makes sense now. Distance about ~100 meters. http://www.youtube.com/watc...;feature=youtu.be Thanks for the tips guys. I ended up going to Oakleigh to get my Burners sorted. Should have done so a long time ago.
