Do you use a 2-iron? Why?

Folks,

I play off 11 and have just picked up a cheap old Titleist 962 2-iron – not cos i needed it, just cos it was $35 and I wanted to see if I could handle a 2-iron. Hit 50 balls with it at the range this morning and it felt better than I’d anticipated – some shit shots, of course, but plenty of nice solid hits out of the centre. Ball flight was nice and low and penetrating and I was getting it out there the same length as my 19 degree 910H. The 962 2-iron is 19.5 degrees – it’s a cavity-back player’s blade (from what I can tell), and the head and the cavity are both a little bigger than my 710 CBs, obviously making it a little easier to hit. Interestingly, the 710 CB 2-iron is only 18 degrees.
Anyway, I’m going to try taking the 910H out of my bag and see how I go with the 962 2-iron instead. I’d mostly use the 2-iron off the tee on short 4s – and maybe on 5s where the lie doesn’t suit a 3W. I don’t have trouble with the hybrid, except maybe it goes a little high, but with the 2-iron I feel I can hit down on the ball more and get better compression. I know the idea with hybrids is to hit them as if they were long irons, but if I try to hit down on the ball with a hybrid it doesn’t work…I end up sweeping at the ball more with a hybrid. I know it goes against modern thinking to choose a long-iron over a hybrid, and I’m by no means an awesome golfer. Just wondering if any/many golfers out there favour a 2-iron (or 1-iron or 3-iron) over a hybrid and why you find that long-irons work better for you? Or vice versa? Other than the hybrid/2-iron, my set includes a 15 degree 3W then a 4-iron… . Cheers.

Go for it, at least you will be hitting a tradional club over a modern gimme club that was developed to make Golf Equipment Companies money

the right type of hybrid has seen the 2 iron die

3 iron is dead, hell most sets dont come with a 4 iron these days

you can buy a muscle back hybrid similar to what Mizuno and Titleist make and its going to be more forgiving

have a look in the bags of the guys on the senoir tour and thats what we should be playing

atleast 2 hybrids and maybe a fairway wood also

KJ choi is a good exmaple – he often starts his bag with 5 iron down

hes major winner and he plays hybrids better than long irons coz derrr they are easier!

Golf is only a game…Yeah right who are you kidding?

Mate,

Don’t need a more forgiving hybrid – as I said, I hit my 910H well. Just thought I’d try a 2-iron cos you get lower ball flight. No harm in sticking with a low-iron if you can handle it. And KJ Choi is an awesome, golfer…he hasn’t win a major yet though… . Each to their own I guess…

Sorry I was thinking Y.E. Yang who won a major with similar set up

that said KJ has a quite few wood covers in his bag

it makes sense

I now have 3 “wooded” clubs in the bag besides driver

3 wood and 2 hybrids

I dont miss my 4 iron

Same same, I use a 2 iron to hit it low …. and to impress others with my golfing prowess because let’s face it, that’s what it’s all about.

This space for rent.

I’ve carried a 2 iron for years now. I haven’t ever hit a hybrid simply because I don’t feel I need to.

Have you come here to play Jesus, with the leopards in your head

Ironmick u don’t use a gimme club?

Yes I use a 2i. Because it goes 1 further than a 3i.

What is this golf game you talk of?

Worst golf purchase I have made is a hybrid tried them all and went with what worked best but I would take an iron anyday my hybrid sits in the cupboard where it belongs!!

I like you betty…

2 iron….pffft…the longest iron I now have in the bag is a 5, and it hardly gets used at all as I have 3/4/5 hybrid. 6 iron for up to about 140m….and then the hybrids come into play. 5 iron is for low punch shots usually.

As for gimme clubs….I’d rather hit a solid shot with a hybrid than hit a crap one with a club I simply don’t have the ability to hit.

Shot more than 36 points in an OOM day….seriously.
Smoldy. When only the best will do.

My longest iron is a 5 – and after that I have two hybrids and a fairway wood. I looked at the holes on my course where I get extra shots, and on the longest holes I am going to get an extra shot until I am a single figure handicapper – so it is a much smarter shot to lay up and go in with a wedge than trying to hit those greens with a long iron or a hybrid.

The only thing that I really miss my 4I for is hitting out of the trees – despite the publicity, I feel more comfortable hitting irons out of the rough than the hybrids.

I have a mate who plays 4-6 times a year.
Still plays a 1 iron. And he smashes it 220.

He is no where near as accurate with the 3w.
Trajectory is unreal. I hate him.

…..

I have recently added a 3 iron, which I had bent to 19* to play as a 2 iron. This was because they don’t make a 2 iron for my set, and also because I was having issues with driver/3 wood.
I now have the option, depending on the hole, of using driver, 3 wood, 2 iron, 3 iron off the tee.

This is very versatile, as if you get a risk/reward hole, like the 3rd at Woodlands. Although I chose to hit driver, as the breeze was behind us, I could have easily gone 2-3 iron more to the left.

I’d never go higher than 2 iron, cause as Trevino once said, not even God could hit a 1 iron.

I have a 2 iron in my bag, and use it several times a round. But it’s not your average 2 iron though.
I’ve reshafted it with a 9 iron shaft…......

Why, because it sends out little bullets that don’t do anything but go STRAIGHT!!

Off a tee it’ll fly around 160 odd then roll around 30m. Off the deck it’ll fly around 150 with the same roll.
Only gets about 15m height whether off the tee or off the deck.
On a linksy type course though, this is where it comes into its own!! The ball will hit the ground and run well over the 200m mark….... Have actually reached a couple of par 5s in 2 shots with this baby!!

Awesome into the wind as well, as you could imagine!!

grooveless, the only way to play golf……

now a ’groove-snob’, and never going back!! :)

don’t have a 2 iron but have a 2 Hybrid. actually have a 2, 3 and 4 hybrid.

2 is 16 degrees and hit it about 190
3 is 19 degrees and hit it 180
4 is 24 degrees and hit it 170

my 3 wood is 13 degrees and hit it about 205

So my answer is no, but sort of….

I carry two woods – driver and rescue. A 1 iron takes the place of a 3 wood.

Yes ‘95 custom DCI Black B version, I like the flight compared
to a hybrid, usually lower and more consistant.

I was using a 3 and 4 hybrid and then when my swing changed towards the end of last year I could not hit the hybrids to save my life. I have now gone back to the 3 and 4 irons and am hitting them sweetly.

Go for it, I was gaming my old Powerbilt TPS 2i for a couple of months & loved it, only gone back to the 909h hybrid because I think it gave me more flexibility in hitting off lies on the fairway but from the tee the 2i was great on those tight par 4’s & just as long as my 17d hybrid..
