Your wedge/long club make up?

ForumsGolf Equipment | 22 posts

Folks,

Just wondering what wedges and woods/hybrids/long irons you’ve got in your bag?
I’ve got 52, 56, 60 wedges, 15 degree 3W, 19 degree hybrid, and my irons start at 4 (24 degrees). I’m considering putting a 3-iron in the bag because when I take iron off the tee on short/tight 4s I want something a bit more than a 4-iron, but I’m going to have to take one club out of the bag to keep it at 14. So I’m wondering, what’s your make up of wedges and fairway woods/hybrids/long irons? Do you carry three wedges (not including PW) and just two clubs in the woods/hybrids/long iron range, or do you find it more handy having three wood/hybrid/long irons options and just the two wedges?
I use my 52 a fair bit (70-90m) and the 60 degree from all greenside bunkers. I don’t use the 56 as much, but I feel like I can get more accuracy from 50-odd metres out with a 56 rather than a little half-arsed 52. The hybrid goes fine, it’s just sometimes I feel like I should be carrying something between that and the 4-iron… . Guess I could’ve got a 54 and a 60 instead of a 52, 56 and 60, but that ship has sailed lads… . Keen to hear how you tackle this conundrum..it’s a right tragedy. Days of our lives stuff really….

Tramps like us, baby we were born to run.

52/56/60 Taylor made wedges

52 from 100/80
56 from 80/60
60 degree after that.
I like to use a full wedge as my moderation isn’t as good from 3/4 power. And under but above, pretty good .

Dont carry a fairway wood, can’t hit the. Damn things.

I’ve tried seeing things from your point of view but I can’t get my head that far up my arse !!

Hit the hybrid off the tee. How often does this conundrum occur?

I have same set up but a 20.5 hyb

I only carry 13 clubs at the moment after getting fitted for new clubs – I have a couple of “gaps” in my set and the idea is to figure out which one of them causes me the most grief. I definitely am leaning towards getting another wedge – distance control seems much more critical from within 100m than it is in the long game, where a difference in even 30 metres or so is not going to drastically affect the way that I play the hole.

Juz, i have the same wedge setup but i carry 3 iron thru PW. I was trying out a 21 degree hybrid to replace the 3 iron, but i realised my 3 iron is the easiest club in my bag to hit, its my go to club off the tee on most short par 4s if the driver isn’t working on that day, which is not often but its great to know its in the bag.
I think your issue is that if you want a hybrid in the bag for those rescue occasions then you need to match the yardage to your 3 iron, thus not leaving any gaps.
I would love to drop the 60 and get a 2 iron but i find on a lot of courses the bunkers are very inconsistent, and in the ones with less sand i like to use the 60 instead of my 56.

Currently
PW (47 deg)
54 deg wedge
60 deg wedge
Irons
2 to 8
Fairways
3 Wood (15 deg)

Then there is either a 1 iron or a 2ish hybrid (17 deg)
Only recently started carrying the hybrid when the 2 iron was not being friendly off the tee – but I don’t like it much.

Have dropped the 9 iron to be able to carry the 1 or hybrid, as can work the 8 or PW to fill the 9 iron gap.

Currently thinking I might get something between the PW (47 deg) and 54 deg wedge. So likely to drop the hybrid.

2 iron is my stock best hitter in the bag and only use the 3W occasionally (off the fairway as god intended)..

Cheers
A

Most of the time I’ll have my clubs set up as
Driver,
3 hybrid – 17 deg
3 iron – 21 deg
4 iron – 24 deg
5 iron – 27 deg
6 iron – 30 deg
7 iron – 33 deg
8 iron – 37 deg
9 iron – 41 deg
PW – 46 deg then wedges 50, 54 and 58 deg

I also have two fairway woods 13 and 15.5 deg and a 4 hybrid 22 deg. If I need to change a club due to different types of courses or conditions then I have a number of options to choose from.
I’ll usually take the PW or 50 deg wedge out and a fairway wood (either 13deg or 15deg) comes in and / or either the 3h or 3i comes out and the 4hybrid (22deg) will come in. As long as I have the right gaps between clubs for the conditions on the day.

Take out the club you feel you can do without the most and put the 3 iron in. The problem you’ll have then is your 3 iron and 3hybrid are close. I’d prefer to have the short irons in the bag than the long irons. put what clubs you need in the bag for the conditions your playing in. Good Luck, it always hard to get the right mix

Irons- 3 to pw (47)

I found having three wedges gave me to many options andwhen I would hit the 52 I would hit it how I should of the the 56 or vice versa. Been doing a lot better since I got rid of the 56

That seems to work for me. There is a fair gap between the hybrid & the 4 iron. Have tried to fill this but whatever I take out is worse than having the gap where it is. Tried leaving out the Lob wedge but so many tight lies I need the Lobby more than a 3 iron .

now my gaps are pretty small in the long clubs

my 17 deg hybrid and 3 wood are not much apart

boy can hot 200 metters with but hybrid can be drawn and faded, high ball – low stinger

3 wood is purely for the low stinger off the tee into the wind or on par 5’s to get close.

20 degree hybrid 170 meter club

I’m going to change my wedges however

going to change the gap wedge loft of the 50 to a 48..now a 48 is like a PW but I hit knock down shots with my gap so this will allow to hit a longer knock down shots

Golf is only a game…Yeah right who are you kidding?

I swap the 4iron in and out for a 23 Hybrid sometimes.

I found the biggest gap to fill is between my 5 iron (170m) and 5 wood (210m), however I find that this is not a scoring distance for me so I rather carry the extra wedges.
