Hey guys, brand new member here. Love the site, been reading through the forums alot and it looks like an awesome place. Just after a few opinions from the knowledgeable folks here in regards to some second hand iron sets I’ve been looking at purchasing. I’ve already done a reasonable amount of research and read through countless reviews, but would prefer to get some better insight. Any advice, suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated. I currently use a set of old school Spalding Eclipse Graphite Shafts 3 – PW. These clubs have served me well, but i think now that I’m beginning to take golf seriously, I need to upgrade. I only have a budget of about 300 dollars, so here is a list of the clubs I’ve come across so far. Mizuno MX 300’s (4-GW) – $190 Cobra S3’s (5-SW) – $250 TaylorMade R11 Lookalike’s (3-PW) – $200 Titleist 755’s (3-PW) – $250 Nike Pro Combo OS’s (3-PW) – $300 Ping Karsten Graphite’s (2-SW) – $250 Cleveland TA7 GUNMETAL’s (4-DW) – $300 Taylor Made Burner Plus’ (4-SW) – $160 Right now I’m leaning towards the Cobra’s, purely because of the graphite shafts. Since I’m so used to using graphite’s… I’m worried how I will go if I move to steel. Any advice would be appreciated.

Go into Drummonds or pro shop and see what you can get fitted. Seeing you’re only looking at irons they may have something that’s just right. A lot of stock is ‘superseded’ as its the new year. Taylormade r11 are now old due to r11s etc. these places usually don’t want old stock around when they want to sell the newest model. I’m pretty sure they’re in your budget.

R11 lookalike? And they’re 1/2” short. You might what to join ozgolf to be honest. They have lots of sets moving all the time through their classifieds.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have thought about going into Drummond, just always skeptical about their intentions, whether they are just going to push me towards whatever they wanna move from their stock. I’ll check out OzGolf.

I have looked at this site before, yes. I was interested in the complete sets, but since I didn’t really want to revert to the cheap complete sets, I decided to focus on picking up an iron set. The Burners on that site… Are either the Burner 1.0’s for $292 and Burner Plus’ (exact same model as the second hand one’s I listed above) for $349.. I wasn’t really considering a brand new set because I am probably still in the beginner stage. Can anyone give me some comparisons of the above sets? Has anyone owned or used any of these clubs? I feel like the second hand TaylorMade’s seem like a good deal. Since i could probably offer $120 or so for them.

I played with a bloke who had a set of Burners and he was very happy with them. They were probably well fitted. Of course, if they were not fitted to his swing, he probably would have thought they were rubbish. That’s the whole point. Irrespective of whether any clubs have a good reputation, or the price is a good deal, it’s whether they are suited to the player’s swing that really matters. Those used Burners might be a good set, but you should also factor in the price of a fitting and perhaps a set of replacement shafts.

Yup. I think getting fitted sounds like the right plan. How expensive is it to replace shafts?

True the MX 300 look nice. Not sure there the best replacement for Spalding Eclipse with graphite shafts. (Especially seeing every search i did on them says they’re a womens club)

Lots of low markers over there, they know how to play rather than some who think they can play. ;-)

Hey Winnie, can you amend your post to the link only (the green bit) so we can get this back into frame size please….

Mate the best thing you could do first would be to get measured up and swing speed etc so you know what spec’s you are looking for in a club. Will your shaft length be 1/2” longer than standard? Standard or maybe 1/2” shorter? This has to do with arm length rather than height. What type of shaft suits your swing? Graphite, steel? Regular flex, Stiff or maybe senior. Based on swing speed and tempo. Go to a Pro shop explain what you are doing and why you are doing it, they may charge you a nominal fee but usually will take that off the price of a set if you choose to buy from them. Anything you buy with out knowing some of these basics will simply be guess work and you could end up with clubs that are totally unsuitable for you. My 2c worth
H,cap 2010 H24 L20, 2011 H22 L17, 2012 H19 L13 2013 H12.9 L12.4 (12.3 new PB 16/1/13) (Next Goal Single figures) sweats profusely. |

unless you have a vagina or collect a pension cheque, you should be running steel in your bats… “heavy is good, heavy is reliable….”
|
|
Steel flys through the air better after a poor shot…...... seriously, steel is the only way to go if you’re reasonably strong and getting serious.

You can get steel shafts that are just as light as graphite. It’s important to get the right swing weight.
