Anyone go driver 5 wood?

Just curious as I’m considering doing this myself with an 18deg 5 wood. The yardages seem to work for me regardless of what is stamped on the club.

I go Driver – 17 degree hybrid. Length and consistency with hyrid works for me.

Go with the yardages and what you feel. I don’t carry a 3 wood because I can’t hit one consistently off the deck and because there are relatively few holes where I would realistically use one off the tee. Even though I only carry 13 clubs at the moment, I don’t see the use in carrying one.

My fitter suggested that if you aren’t sure whether to carry a club or not, leave it out of your bag and see whether you miss it. If you do, then you have your answer. If you don’t notice it is gone, then likewise.

I have driver and then the original Cally Steelhead 5 wood, then 2 iron to sand and lob wedge.
My 5 wood is long enough for most courses I play. I can control the height of the 5 wood a lot more than is possible with the 2 iron.

All you need to worry about is your yardage gaps, whatever works is the best for you

I did this for a year ..Works

Untill I found a 3 wood I liked

My 3 wood and hybrids all match ..Ping i15

14 wood, 17 and 20* hybrids

Not a big gap but works

Golf is only a game…Yeah right who are you kidding?

I use Driver – 18 Deg hybrid

Can’t hit a 3 Wood off the deck but have no problems with the Hyb.

As stated, if the yardage gaps work for you, go with what you are comfortable hitting

I use Callaway FT9 driver then Callaway FT 21 degree hybrid so there is a 30m-40m distance gap.

Got a matching 3 wood but can’t hit it so it stays out of the bag.

There are a few holes on my home course where the 3w would be a better option but better off being short with the hybrid than OOB with the 3w…

I’m actually looking for a matching 24 degree hybrid as I can’t hit my 4 iron either.

Thanks for your replies, pretty interesting that there are a few in the same boat.

I had a hunt around yesterday and there are two options available.

A 16.5deg 4 wood or a 17 deg hybrid. I hit both roughly the same distance, the 4 wood just a tad further. I can see how in some instances the 4 wood would be easier to hit and how in others the 17 hybrid would be more beneficial (from a wider variety of lies).

I’m sort of leaning toward the hybrid now and possibly adding a fairway wood down the track or maybe even never….

Thoughts on 4 wood vs low loft hybrid?

For those that that play driver-hybrid, do you add another wedge to fill the bag?

.

you probably need to think about what you use the 4 wood/hybrid for, is it to hit 2nd shots at par 5’s or tee shots to par 3’s, if par 3’s perhaps a hybrid may be better to get more height and stopping power.

are you after distance of flight ?

something

I hit my 4 iron 170-175m so that covers me for most of the longer par 3’s on the courses that I play.

I also have a 21deg 3 iron that I don’t usually carry which I can hit 180-185m when the the swing is on.

Basically I’m looking for a club to use as 2nd shot on par 5 or off the tee on tight par 4’s. I just want to advance the ball a couple of hundred metres up the fairway.

.

Deano has hit the nail on the head, the Hyb will have less roll out than a 4W, but that works for long Par 3’s…

I actually carry the 18 Deg Hyb and a 21 Deg Hyb which are supposedly 2i and 3 i replacements, they are also fantastic for bunting out from the tree line if you get wayward off the Tee, just hit a punch shot, they get about 3-4 feet off the ground at most and will gain 100M of useful distance!

I have added a 60 Deg Wedge to fill the Bag.

I go => driver + 2 hybrid.

Ive gone Driver, 4 wood and then 7 & 9 wood.
I have gone the 4W cauz i stink at trying to hit a 3 off the deck and even off the tee solidly..If it doesn’t work, I picked up an Adams Speedline fw/hybrid 5 i could whack it in and take out the 4 W.

I have Driver -5 wood. The 5 wood shaft has been extended about 12 mm to give me a little extra distance . then the next club in the bag is a 20 deg Hybrid. Had this setup for about 3 years now.

I go Driver then 17* (R9/R11) 4wood.
Have done so for years.
No real need for a 3 wood these days for amateurs IMO…..

I’m the same as Titleist. Driver then 4 wood. I then have a 4 hybrid because I play 4 wedges. There are significant gaps between these 3 clubs but I have always been comfortable choking down so I use that to fill gaps.

I always think this

if you cant make a par 5 in 2 shots then I dont think there a huge need for a 3 wood in your bag

lay up with a 17-19 degree club and hit wedge

slicing the 3 wood into the bush kills the hole

lay up and you can still make par at worst…off the tee

I just hit a shorter drive if I need to or a fade if I want to lay up on short par 4 with driver say a 310 meters hole

still think witrh the bigger head driver is better option off the tee than a 3 wood – why because the head size!!

tht said I do carry a 3 wood but its hardly used – only when I can get to the par 5’s or cloe or into the wind on a very long par 4 which we have two that play into a 3 club breeze

the lie has to be good and ball not below my feet or downhill slope..needs to be sitting good to go 3 wood

Golf is only a game…Yeah right who are you kidding?

I go Driver, 4 wood, 7 wood. Can’t hit a 3 wood to save myself and 4 wood is perfect. 7 wood is perfect for hitting out of the kikuyu rough on our course and still gives great distance plus when hit well gives a good high flight which lands softly, about equal to 5 iron.

I have driver, 18.5 wood, 21 hybrid 4iron is 24 degrees.
I then added an extra wedge so I have pw 46, gw 50, sw 56 flop wedge 60. The extra wedge gets far more use than the 3w ever did.

Definition of insanity…thinking that u can be a good parent and decrease ur handicap at the same time!

Driver, 17* wood works pretty well for me. Carry 52 wedge as extra

i go driver and then putter :)

Only God can judge me!

I upgraded my set recently, haven’t yet bought a new 3W.
Currently carrying Driver, 19deg hybrid, 22 deg hybrid…seems to work fine….
I can hit the hybrids with more consistency that I could a 3W
Dont see a need for a 3W until i can start thinking of hitting par 5’s in 2….

I play G15 Driver and then G15 4 wood (17degrees), I use Titleist 21 and 24 hybrids. There are times that I would like to use 3 and 5 woods but they are few and far between The 4 wood does both for me.
