Explain the virtues of Oil Can wedges please

Morning folks,

I’m in the process of buying my first ever Vokeys (SM4s). Have scored a 60 on the bay and am on the verge of scoring a 56 here – both with the Tour Chrome finish, which is my preferred finish. I’m buying second hand cos I’ve dropped a shitload on golf in the last six months and have come across a decently priced 52 – only thing is it’s the Oil Can finish, not Tour Chrome. I know a lot of the pros prefer the Oil Can finish, and there’s a lot of love for them from better amateurs….can you guys please explain the virtues of the oil can finish? I know there’s meant to be less glare from them…does the rust really make them spin more? And do you actually have to oil them as they get older or something? I’m not totally averse to the rusty look…would like all three Vokeys to match with the same finish, but am thinking I might get this 52 Oil Can cos of the price then see how much I like it over time…. . Your informed opinions would be appreciated. Cheers.

According to Bob Vokey, the differences in finishes is cosmetic. It won’t effect spin or trajectory. He should know, he gets paid buckets of cash to design wedges.

Totally ignorant about almost everything except golf.

glare only.

the rest is like raz said purely cosmetic

Thankyou Jesus…….., praise the lord.

So all those awesome golfers (pros and otherwise) who use Oil Cans purely use them for reduced glare and cos they like they look? Interesting juxtaposition – having all shiny new clubs and rusted up wedges…

yep, pretty much

My Vokeys are all oil cans.
I’m a big fan of the aesthetics of this finish.
In terms of reduced glare they work a treat.
Finish wise, I’ve never touched them at all, as soon as they get exposed to any moisture in the air they rust up.

The virtues of Oil Can wedges? It gives the Vokey marketing people something more to gab on about.

It is not just Vokey that have various (i.e. darker) finishes to their wedges.
the sole purpose of a “dark” wedge is to show everyone within viewing distance that you have driven the ball sooo far that you only need to play a very short club for your next shot.
It shows, therefore, that you are a super-golfer.

I wear sunnies for glare – problem solved

That said I like the look but I use chrome wedges

Golf is only a game…Yeah right who are you kidding?

Nice look if you used and liked Berrylium ping wedges years back.

Treat the young members at your club with mutual respect.Clubs need them too.

I’m not calling Mr Vokey a liar but I play oil cans most of the time & I think they spin more. Although I hate playing in the rain, I love it the game after when you pull your wedges out & they’re rusty as buggery. I’ve got plenty of chrome, black nickel & oil cans but prefer the rusty’s
