Putts are skidding - are my putter specs right for me

I have a milled face anser style putter with 3deg loft. My biggest issue has been leaving putts outside of 5 metres short.I have tried to hit the outt harder, ball forward stance, ball back stance, left hand low grip, etc… but a lot of speed seems to be wiped off early in the putt through skidding.

Should I look for heavier putter, more loft, face insert???? I kinda like the write up on the metals x range and the #7 looks pretty nice.

Any suggestions?

BTW I don’t have an iphone so can’t use the ping app and I will go for a fitting at some stage.

Normally if you are missing to a certain side, it will be spec problem.
i.e. heel shafted v centre shaft.

Also depending on were you play and the style of greens, loft can be an issue. Quick firm greens = less loft

Are you sure you just aren’t decelerating before impact? Sounds like it to me

Or maybe even delofting the putter on impact so its imparting neutral/back spin instead of getting the ball rolling forward as early as possible. Any chance of capturing some video footage of the putt?

Which can be caused by an uneven grip pressure throughout the putt. This was a poblem I had diagnosed by my pro in a recent putting lesson. Much better now and stroking the ball much more confidently and with an even tempo.

skidding is from hitting
roll the ball dont hit it

Thanks for the input. It sounds like its time to get a pro to check out my putting.

I might change to a mallet style putter with different face insert just for a change of scenery.

an insert will give you less feel which in your predicament i would suggest a backward step. I have tried lots of putters with them and i get no feed back from the putter, eg you cant tell if you hit it in the midddle or the toe or heel. The insert deadens the impact
be interesting to know how quick your putting swing is

I’d suggest soft hands, and make sure that your hands continue on towards the target ….... after contact with the ball.

Try to focus on stroking thru the ball, and not at it.(Another way of expressing Kiwi’s dont hit it)

Hi Kiwi,

Thanks for your advice.

I played a quick 9 after work yesterday and hit 6/9 greens but I had no better than a 3 putt…so clearly my confidence in the putter I have is shot. Normally I might have 1 tap in,a couple of 3 putts and the rest 2 putts. Generally my putting has been around 20 over 9 holes for quite some time now.

I might look at a milled face mallet putter then. I feel like the head size and weight of a mallet will help me stroke the ball rather than hit at it which might be happening with the anser style I have now.

When I go for swing lessons I do talk about putting with my pro but I’m yet to have a proper putting lesson out on the green. Anyway during our putting discussions I sometimes pull out my putter and take a few practice strokes in front of him and 9/10 he says my stroke is fine – somestime he does tweak a thing or two. Perhaps my stroke changes when it comes time to actually hitting a ball, I don’t know.

Not wanting to hijack, but I find myself pushing to the right on short-mid range putts. Currently using a face balanced heel shafted 2 ball putter. Any advice?

I was doing the same thing (pushing shortish putts)
This was especially the case on left to right breakers.
Recently went to a cross handed grip and I’m making a lot more of them.
Outside 8 feet I still use a normal grip
Give it a whirl, see if it works for you.
FWIW I’ve gone the past 70 holes without a 3 putt :)

Nogolf, I reckon definitely go and get a proper lesson and get your pro to advise on whether you need a putter. From your stats above, it seems that if you get your putting in order, you could improve your scoring significantly by improving your performance with the flat stick.

I think that the biggest risk to putting consistency though is eroding your confidence – something that chopping and changing putters and techniques will accomplish very quickly. So get a lesson, be reassured by the pro that your stroke is good and your putter suits you, create a routine and be confident that you have all of the framework right, then just work at improving your consistency.

Earlier this year I listened to a couple of people who chided my putting stroke and I spiralled into losing confidence, swapping putters and felt terrified walking onto the greens. I have happily got through that phase but my stats support the fact that during that period I was putting appreciably more poorly than I normally do – all because I lost confidence in my stroke and was constantly second guessing what I was doing.

looking at the hole to soon is an absolute no no
this can result in a push
also poor alignment at impact

The insert will change the feel but it isn’t necessarily better or worse due to combining ball and the type of insert. It’s all about feel.

In 2010 some guy did a study on it and there was nothing in it for insert or not when it came to winners on tour.

yep just preference. I hated the odyssey white hot insert, seemed to spring off the face too hot every now and then, but love the odyssey black series insert, firmer and offers a really nice sound and feel.

Once you lose confidence, nerve and start second guessing you’re toast. Get back to basics, find a putter you feel comfortable with, have a putting lesson and start building the confidence up again.

A trick I tried and it got me rolling the ball better.. Zach Johnson does it, take a normal stance, ball slightly forward of centre, set up to the putt and simply lean the grip end toward the rear as in adding more loft but only slightly. The thing I worked on is rolling the ball on the upswing, as opposed to at the bottom or hitting down on it. It was all about the feeling of rolling rather than hitting. Worked though. I’m rolling it much better. Will try find the link where I read it.

koiom, I went straight to the putting green before work today to give this a try and my initial 15 minute putting session worked really well! Same as you, I putted normally from outside of 10 feet (hitting longer putts quack handed feels strange), but inside of 8-10 feet I was deadly :-) Only pushed one and it just missed the hole by millimetres, not inches! Thanks mate

I definitely don’t look at the hole, if anything I don’t look up until I think the ball is near the hole to make myself not look early.
Poor alignment is probably most of it because I’m not very good at this game yet :-)

Nice one Mububban.
I was surprised when I first tried it at how natural it felt
I was expecting it to feel very wierd, but nope….felt nothing but solid

I had to remind myself of someone else’s tip “soft hands” because initially I was choking the hell out of the putter grip until I found a comfortable overlapping grip.

Swinging the putter for longer range putts did feel weird, not sure if I’ll go to long range putting cack handed, but I’m definitely going to practise short range this way from now on!
