V1 Golf analysis software/apps

Just thought I’d spread some positive remarks/reviews regarding the V1 Golf Analysis app I recently got for iPhone/iPad. Have been videoing my swing for a while and after reading some comments a few weeks ago I decided to go ahead and buy the app for $5.49.
It is surprisingly easy to use and has all of the features that you would expect in a swing analysis tool.
You can record video straight in the app or upload video from your ‘camera roll’ within the iPad or iPhone. The upload feature is great for analysing swings made with a high speed camera or in my case a HD DSLR. Not sure if the expense of a high speed camera is my next point of call but knowing that the feature is there is great. I picked up an iPhone tripod mount (<$5) months and moths ago for another reason but it really came in handy using this app. Have been looking at eBay for a similar mount for the iPad but it seems they’re a little more expensive.

The main reason I got it was Im seeing a coach more regularly as well as making a visit to Gary or Lee at GCI at the end of the month so I wanted to be able to effectively monitor my practice. Idea being I can get my coach to record swings where I’m in good positions relating to what we are working on and then I can compare that with the swings I’m making when I am practicing side by side in the app.

All in all I think it’s a relatively inexpensive piece of software that will hopefully help me improve my game.

This App is an absolute CRACKER!!!! And while I’ve only recently started doing it myself via this app and with a normal video camera (and Wife on the iPad:)), I can’t say enough how important it is to video your swing – to see what you’re doing wrong AND right. I find it’s the quickest way to learn if/where you’re shit and to try and mimic the pros. In the V1 App I put it in compare mode (split screen) and have Rory’s swing on top, mine on the bottom and slo-mo them both to see how/where/when I’m getting out of position.
Just last week by doing this I figured out that I’m way out of position at the top, and since this realisation I’ve been focusing on getting a fuller shoulder rotation on the backswing to really coil up the hips/upper body. Already working like a charm – I’m swinging slower/smoother (ie, not trying to create the speed with my arms alone) and the ball is going further. Without videoing my swing, I wouldn’t have realised where my swing was getting out of whack.
What I find funny is, if you play with someone who has a funny/dodgy looking swing, you can see their faults from a mile away cos it all looks unco, but until you video your own swing you have no idea what it looks like. Once you do, you’ll be able to pick up on exact things that require attention. Using the V1 app, and just watching slo-mo video of my swing in general (you don’t need the app to do that) I’m now consciously focusing on getting into similar positions as the pros at the top of backswing, at impact, and at the top of the follow through. Get in on it lads:).

Keep it surreal folks.

did you get the free version or the paid one fuzzy?

Hey tkkgale,

I got the free version first, which allows you to do all the analysing of your own swing but only let’s you download about three of the ‘model’ vids of the pros. Then I paid the $5 or $6 to get the full version so I could access all the other ‘model’ vids. Great app I reckon, there seems to be more and more quality apps coming out to help us hackers. Another good (and free) one is SwingReader, which actually has a better user interface than V1, but it doesn’t have the pro videos….

Thanks Fuzzy.

If your after a free version for PC

I originally used my phone, but have since bought an iPad Mini, which is a very practical size for this sort of thing. I take my stand bag, position it either directly behind me (for down the line view) or directly opposite myself at set up (for front-on view) and then position the iPad amongst the clubheads protruding out of the top of the bag until the camera is focused/pointing at my swing (in full) when I’m standing at address. It’s a bit fiddly to wedge the iPad in there so it’s stable and sitting level and pointing exactly at you, but just make sure you’re using the iPads (or your phone’s) front camera, so you can line yourself up accordingly. At the range it works best when you’re hitting off grass cos you’ve got plenty of room; in the bays you have to use the bay next to you for front-on views and it can get obscured. I’m no Orson Welles, but this seems to do the trick for me. A mate of mine’s gone all out and bought a GoPro – the FPS on those things is awesome. Hope this helps mate.

This app is amazing, for 5 bucks you can’t go wrong, I’ve been using it for just over a year and it keeps getting better and better.

Cheers Fuzzy! The gopro is great for taking video of your swing anywhere. The gopro is connected to a gorilla tripod and that can wrap around your golf buggy or bag.

With the later versions of the gopro you can wirelessly connect your iphone to the gopro and control recording from your iphone; saves you from walking back and from camera to start and stop recording. The iphone also gives you the preview so you know what you are recording.

Like Fuzzy said, the FPS is great to see each stage in your swing. The iphone or ipad gets blurry when trying to freeze your swing, especially on the downswing. I’m sure there are other great video cameras for recording your swing, but I got the gopro to prop it up on my surfboard.

Do a search for Hollywood Cowan on google or YouTube and he has compiled some pretty cool videos of his rounds in Hawaii. I’m sure he used a gopro for it too.

I saw at the PGA Merchandise show V1 are releasing a newer version in the near future as well as supplying a wireless 120fps mini digital video camera for under $200. The review will be coming up at GolfWRX. I’ve been trying to find a semi decent but less expensive high speed camera for a while as the iPad and iPhone video isn’t that crash hot. My DSLR takes good video but it is limited to either 24fps at 1080p or 30fps at 720p. What FPS does the gopro run at??

“If your not improving, your going backwards.”

Up to 120 fps at 848×480.
I think right now I have it at 30fps at 1920×1080.

I used to use my DSLR but too much effort bringing the tripod also.

I have now got the V1 app on the phone and it looks pretty bloody good. I have the Android version.
Been doing a bit of messing around with it and looking for some hints and tips from the more experienced users:
when i try and “trim” a video the new version plays like it’s in fast forward.
Anybody else had that problem?

I’ve had that same problem mate, although I’ve no idea how to fix it… . Maybe you can email the developer or something..
