Haha. I hope so.

You won’t regret it Bushy!

Had 3 rounds with mine now – first 2 rounds were a little hit and miss as I hadn’t hit a club for 3 weeks, but my last round, it was dialled in!

10.5deg neutral. Aiming everything a little left to counter my slice – everything went exactly where I aimed, so I played a lot of shots from the left hand rough. With my swing dialled in it is laser straight, where I’d even get a light slice tail with the 9064LS.

Can see the effect of lower spin – it starts where my other drivers do, but doesn’t climb nearly as much as they do. Hitting about 200m, with 0m roll due to the soggy course, which is about the carry I used to get, but I feel I will get more roll than the 20-30m I normally do due to the lower flight.

Can’t wait for the course to dry out, but very impressed with this club.

Cheers,
Ben

Thats really pleasing to hear Benno. I’m really looking forward to it showing up but I’m not holding my breath for it before the weekend. When it gets here I’ve organised a Flightscope session to dial it in so I will try and take some photos and share the numbers I get compared to my current driver.

I feel like a little kid, waiting, checking, waiting some more…

I had a hit of the both models of Covert driver and the Covert Tour fairway wood during the week.

It was only in the nets at a Golf World. I was more interested in trying out the driver on their machine, so I only hit a couple with the Covert fairway wood but interestingly both dead centre out of the face. Felt nice.

Unfortunately the match up between the Covert Tour Driver and my VR Tour didn’t go as planned with my swing being a bit rusty due to not swinging a club for 2-3 weeks. What I will say is that the head of the Tour Driver looks dead sexy and the swoosh is not noticeable to the eye when lining up the ball. The sound off the face is fine also. The good shots when using the Covert Tour Driver and my VR Tour seemed to go the same or similar length. But to be fair there weren’t enough solid strikes to make a solid comparison.

A bit more practice & maybe a lesson & I’ll be back there for another go.

the covert already cheap on the USA ebay sites

250 ish

might even just buy one for fun then re- sell it if I dont like it

whats the stock shaft like?

Golf is only a game…Yeah right who are you kidding?

I went into a golf-world on friday to have a hit of them. Considering that mine is due to arrive tomorrow it was more of a chance to see them in the flesh and get an idea of the feel, sound and look especially because this is the first club I’ve ever bought sight unseen.

I am very happy to report that they are (so far) everything I had assumed and a little bit more. I was most impressed with the feel and sound at impact.

The tour version is one sexy club and I actually totally forgot to see if the swoosh on the crown was distracting because I didn’t even notice it. Only just thought about it now and realised I had forgotten about it. The stiff shaft that comes with the performance is a bit whippy for me but the KK Silver in the tour head is a beast. Considering the ‘accuracy’ of the GW machines I’m not placing too much faith in the measurements but I saw almost 1000 rpm difference between the Tour/Silver and the Performance/Black combos. Good launch and pretty good ballspeed and I was hitting some bombs. The more important numbers will come during the week when I put it on the Flightscope but the feel and sound was excellent.

I can’t get over how sexy the tour looks at address, just looks like it wants to be spanked.

I will say the rrp prices were a little disappointing especially the tour, but I wasn’t really surprised. It’s a shame.

I am now looking forward to tomorrow even more…

Yep, what were they asking? I actually forgot to look when I was there. :-/

Oh yeah… you sitting down?

Covert Tour AU$500

Covert Performance AU$349

Was also told that supplies of the tour version are extremely limited, due to the demand in the US and a big chunk was apparently slashed from the Aussie order. Something like two thirds of the order…

The store is only getting 2 tour’s in until the next order 5-6 weeks away.

Isn’t the Nike Covert Cavity very much like the Sonartec woods that Nick Price bought into and represented at least twenty years ago. Dont think Nike have come up with anything new really with this driver.

Im the other Tom Watson and I once got a Bronze Medallion Lifesaving Certificate whilst wearing striped pyjamas.

Exactly Tw. That was my thoughts when I first saw the Covert. The Sonartec fired flat bullets but never made it into the bags of club golfers. The Sonny fairway woods were in the bags of 60% of the tour players 10 years ago. The heads were made of maraging steel the same steel in many drivers today. I guess they have to get their money to pay Tiger and Rory.

Totally ignorant about almost everything except golf.

Radar, mate Im not saying the Covert is not a good driver in fact Im very tempted by the reports on it. Glad you also recall the Sonartec gear, maybe Nike forgot there are still a few of us old club hos who recall the Sonartec and know Nike have not found something new with a cavity in the big dogs. You are right though about the Pros, a lot of them really liked the Sonartec fairways

Tw, I had an opportunity to look in most of the bags at the 2003 US Open. The Sony was very prevalent. The winner Furyk, carried one. I’ve still got mine from 2002.

Radar, do you still game it ? I used to see them a lot during my crazy days of buying and selling way too much gear. I haven’t read any of the Nike marketing but would be interested to see if they market the Cavity as a new idea/ design.

No mate, it’s retired. I have the previous Hot X Cally with the 44” shaft. It is about the same distance as the Sony but easier to hit. The Sony has a very heavy head compared to other models. A pro told me that the Sony was considered a blade fairway metal – very unforgiving.

Sounds like it was hard to hit, bugger that I need all the hell I can get with a FW as Im a genius at hitting the twenty yard topped shot but at least I never lose a ball.

I got my driver last week, and am loving it. Looks great at address and the feel at impact is awsome. But will be getting some other head cover for it, the Nike one that came with it is ugly and hard to get on and off, interested to see if anyone else has the same thoughts.

It’s a sock style headcover isn’t it? Nike had brilliant magnetic fastening driver headcovers in the original VR line but then moved to (stupid) sock style covers in the VR Pro line. A stupid move to try & capture sentimentality. The original headcover can be handled in one hand. Sock style models need both hands. Nike fail.

The sock protects the shaft when the clubs are in the car, ute, SUV or whatever if the iron heads aren’t covered. Magnetic covers (the magnets) seem to have a short life, well they did for me. Lucky Jo is handy and could sew Velcro on the flaps.

Tw, at the time I purchased my Sony 14*, I also had a KZG PFT 300 made up to my specs by a master club fitter ex Golfsmith San Diego who was working at Carrara on the Gold Coast. It is a 300cc head in a special grade stainless steel.
I have decided to go back to this driver because my swing speed under 100mph is not fast enough to take advantage of the bigger heads with the flexible faces. The KZG is a good 15 metres longer than my other drivers. It requires a more exacting strike, but that is what distance and accuracy is about anyway. I am totally over 400cc + drivers. :-)

as opposed to…

I know I hate the Vr Pro headcover, no sock and the magnetic closure is useless most of the time. The VRS Covert one doesnt look as bad as I thought. I think it would need a similar tab that the Taylormade and Titleist ones have to help pull it off. I saw a photo of one taken with the flash on and there is some sneaky reflective markings on it (looked that way at least).

If it doesnt impress me, my Star Wars stormtrooper headcover will be staying in the bag…

Fingers crossed one more day of waiting…

The man who hits at the ball rather than through it has no sense of rhythm.
Secrets of the Master – The Best of Bobby Jones

This the headcover I was talking about Razar. I have 3 of them. Works fine. Long enough to protect the shaft. Magnets work fine.

I must have been unlucky with the magnets. Three pairs of magnets and neither lock up. Probably sewed in two of the same polar fields opposite each other. Anything is possible I guess. The heavy Velcro works a treat and is much stronger than magnets anyway.

Well, she arrived today and and was able to get out and have a quick range session.

I took some comparison shots comparing the size with the Titleist D3. If it doesnt look it in the photos the Covert is noticeably smaller in real life.

When it comes to looks I really fell in love with the tour head at first sight. At address, sitting in the bag, resting against a bench, it just looks awesome. It is a compact looking head, much more compact than I expected.

When I hit it, all the waiting was worth it. Everything I wanted it to be and a bit more. The sound and feel is better than I expected, big improvement over the VRPro. I’m getting it on the FlightScope on Friday so we will see how the numbers go then.

I had it set at 10.5N at first but it appeared to get better performance for me at 9.5N. I even went up to 11.5R/11.5N and it still flew a long way at that setting but appeared too high.

My pro came out to collect some buckets so I gave him a few rips and he was pretty impressed. For a TM staffer who had little respect for Nike (his words not mine) he was pretty happy with it. Loved the look of it. Had a nice big high baby draw… and long.

Cant wait to hit real balls on a nicer day, the high humidity and stormy weather isnt very conducive to hitting long, high golf shots.

Will add more when the Flightscope session happens.
