3/4 Iron replacements

OK, I’ve come to the realisation that I can’t hit my long irons as well as I once did and am looking to replace my 3 and 4 irons. I like the Adams Idea Pro, Cleveland HiBore and the Cobra DWS but the main thing I was to ask is what is the actual replacement for the 3 and the 4 irons? – I was thinking that 2 Hybrids of about 19 and 25 degrees….rather than just getting a 3 and 4 Hybrid….thoughts?

Also opinions on the different Hyrids welcome (like the Nickent too)

A bad day at golf is better than a good day at work.

The 19º hybrid loft you mention will be a club longer than the 3 iron you seek to replace.

Yeah, that’s the sort of feedback I’d after….so I have a 3 wood and a 5 iron….and I need to fill the void, so do I go with a hybrid that is longer than the 3 iron and another that is close to the 4 iron?

Yep well done for realising that hybrids are a dam sight eaiser to hit..I carry a 5 iron butI dont even hit that club too often…..prefering a half baked 22 degree hybrid

I use srixon AD hybrids…love them..the adams idea pro’s are lower profile hybrid that appeal to lower markers…they arent as chunky looking

the callaway hybrids are almost a fairway wood (very wide sole)....taylormade make good hybrids also..cleveland halo is a great hybrid…cheap as chips on ebay and the best hybrid I have hit even though I use srixon- go figure)

the lofts and so on are all different…yes get a gap of 4 degrees between your lower lofted and higher lofted hybrid

best decison youll ever make!!

It’s not a bad option.
A popular set up is Driver, 15º 3 wood, 19-20º hybrid, 4 iron. If you want to swap out the 4 iron then 25º is about right for a hybrid to fill that spot. The 19º will replace both 5 wood & 3 iron leaving you room for another wedge.

Hi Live4

When you say ‘I can’t hit my long irons as well as I once did’ what has changed?

I am at the consideration stage of hybrids but frankly hit my 3, 4 & 5 well so am considering a 2 iron as I dont have fairway woods but the hybrid is a thought.

However I just wonder if its all too easy to get the wallet out and buy something to overcome the problem rather than address the issue in your game? Everyone says how wonderful hybrids are but I’m always cautious of the powers of marketing!

The difference between golf and the government is that in
golf you can't improve your lie!

Marketing by the respective companies is one thing but the guys on this forum tell it how it is, if a certain club or type of club is shyte they’ll tell you.

Hybrids will go further than the same lofted iron. Therefore a hybrid with 20o loft that is supposed to be a 3 replacement will go about an extra club on average.

i haven’t hit them but the Cobra DWS gets excellent reviews both here and in the US

I have no doubt about that Frank. I’m not saying hybrids are a gimmick or not an advancement, just being cautious I suppose….or maybe just a tight arse, but I am interested in why someone would buy a driver with a draw bias rather than correct the problem? And the same with the irons?

Hey TheWalrus, I don’t hit my 3 and 4 irons all that much on the course but when I do I am finding I am starting to hit a soft fade, hit right and I have noted that over the past 2 rounds I have put my 3 iron in a position that needed me to hit an extra extra shot….I suppose it may seem like I am trying a quick fix but I really have no confidence with it and I have seen a pro who tells me my swing is just fine…..and besides if it is good enough for the Pro’s on tour why not me :)

I have always hit my long irons well and they have been my strength (I used to have 1 through SW at one stage)...but they are no longer a strength which has put my whole game on it’s head…so I want to try some Hybrids, maybe I am just getting old.

yep kind of how I have done it..I carry 4 wedges….48-52,56,60

Driver, 3 wood 19 hybrid 22 hybrid 5 iron to 9 iron then 4 wedges putter

works well I have every distance covered

even my 5 iron I can have good and bad days with so need for 4 iron…if Im under trees I will use the 19 hybrid to bunt out with

works a treat that set up

I have finally found a 3 wood that I like…I have been fitted 3 times for 3 woods and all 3 were no good..even after lessons

walked into golf box and hit srixon m steel….

have had it for 3 weeks and can draw the ball with it…..The funny thing is Its not shut face wither it sits pretty sqaure, I have srixon hybrids that I love and Im kicking mmyslef why it took me so long to try the srixon fairway wood

Just another idea is to carry a 7 wood instead of the of the 19 hybrid even though the 7 wood is 21 dgrees it will i reckon go the same as 19 hybrid for many mid handicappers…my mate carrys driver 3 wood 7 wood….he figues he can draw or fade the 7 wood to vary the diatnce he wants and then carrys a 25 degree hybrid

which saves him a club…..

Have 19 and 22 Hybrids, Cleveland Hi-Bores, but only ever carry one depending on which course I am playing.

BTW: used to have the Halo, but have found the Hi-Bores a better club to hit!

I use 21deg and 24 deg ping g10 hybrids with success. They along with previous TM burners are very easy to hit and the success rate is exceptional. They are workable with the right swing. They work best for me with an 80% swing which puts them about the same distance as the 3 & 4 irons but you can pin the ears back and unload if you need to.

I find them to be great out of the rough. The only dissadvantage is when you need to play that long low shot. Being stuck under a tree and having to avoid overhanging low branches can add a new challange.

I,m 51 play off 9 (4 in younger days) have a really crook back and these clubs help me….....distance with easy swing.

Hey Live4….Thats interesting.

As I said I’m considering a 2 iron as I dont have anything between my driver and 3 iron but was interested to hear what your thinking was (mainly because my way of thinking is chaotic at times).

I’ve been told to get a 2 hybrid instead as it can also double as a 5 wood! It seems to make sense but as I’ve started to hit my long irons well since I changed clubs 6 months ago I guess I’m a bit reluctant. Old? What is old these days? Do you think age has an impact on how well you hit your long irons?

I just bought a new set of clubs and decided for the 4 iron and 3 wedges option. I have never carries a 3 wood as the only par 5s I reach are in the low 400 metres.
I now carry 2 Hybrids a 20 and a 16. The 20 I can carry between 170 and 185 metres depending on swing etc, the 16 I carry about 180 to 195 again depending on swing lie etc.
What I like about them is you can hit a soft high shot from 170 – 190 out of nearly any lie. Put them back in your stance a bit and they go long and run.
Just out of interest I use the Mizuno

Hi All,

I bought the Adams Idea Pro Hybrids….20 degree and 26 degree (3 and 5)....going off a few things that should give me good coverage from mt 3 wood to my 5 iron…and they felt REALLY nice.

Thanks for all the valuable feedback…I’ll post how they go when I get them.

This is an interesting thread for me, as I’m looking at a Nickent setup with two hybrids (15 and 17 degrees) and thinking that I will probably be able to get away with not carrying a 3-wood and keeping 4 wedges instead. Interested to know how far you end up hitting that 20 degree in comparison to a 5 wood.

I’m guessing a 15 degree hybrid will almost do the job of a 3 wood (I can handle losing, say, 20m or so), but I also wonder if those clubs are good for the old bunt out from under a tree shot (I need to play that shot far too often!)

Will I need to learn to play a 5 iron off my back foot if I dump the 3-iron?

I may well have the worst short game in Australia.

Hybrids are pretty versatile. I use mine a fair around the greens. to bump out of the rough and behind trees they are a good option cause they dont tangle in the rough or bounce up off unneven ground like irons do.

I have found mine to be the best thing for bunting out of trees, and I get enough practice!

If I need to keep it low I just stop the follow through short, seems to work for me; plus as mentioned the club is less likely to get caught up on the way through as it tends to slide over ‘stuff’, (do tend to move the ball back in the stance also to help).

Use your driver for the under tree shot. It’s got the lowest loft in your bag. Or get a lesson on how to hit it really low with your lowest lofted iron.

Guys
I like & can hit my 3 & 4i’s (3i esp for tapping out)
hit my 3 burner on top a lot,
but not the 5 burner which is very sweet (easy to shape too)
If i was to ditch the 3 burner what loft hybrid would be the go?
Cheers

Yes Tim but in my case there is reasoning behind my choice of clubs!

Where I play, once in the trees there tends to be a lot of gravel and stones, don’t want to put a great big ding in my nice Mizuno irons do I, (or my driver for that matter!), the hybrid, couldn’t give a toss!

Then stop playing at The Vines.

Hahaha!

No point now, already wrecked the sole of my hybrid so may as well stick at it!

Probably be better off learning not putting it in the tree line in the first place.

yep I often use the driver under a tree…works a treat and goes about 150 if you catch it right…with half swing
