Hybrids v 5 woods

I play off 12 and have recnetly purchased a 3 wood with a 15 degree loft and a hybrid with 20 degree.
The 3 wood is sweet off the tea or the turf. My hybrid is giving me big headaches off the turf. I’ve persisted with it for about 5 weeks now and am tempted to ditch the hybrid and buy a 5 wood 18 – 22 degree to replace the hybrid.

Thoughts? Do hybrids take a bit of getting used to??

I am the other way and trying to swap a 5 wood for a hybrid. I find the hybrids much easier to control. Any interest in swapping for a Callaway X 5 wood 19* with a regular steel shaft and some money ?

Hi Mouldy,

My brother is actually in line to get the hybrid if I decide to sell up, but thanks anyway!

Have you been borrowing a hybird to use on the course or just had a hit with them at the range? I’ve found my hybrid is pretty good off the synthetic turf, but is hard to hit sweet from the uneven fairways. The 3 wood comes of lots more cleaner.

I’ve found that my hybrid is great out of the rough, even the light stuff, but off the fairway i struggle a little. I also hit it pretty good off a low tee.
The problem i think i have is bc sometimes i try to hit it like an iron and sometimes a wood?

anyways, i think they have their place, if you haven’t hit it ot of the rough try a few from there (unless you’re lucky enough to not be IN the rough lol)

I may be wrong, but is that not why they’re called a “rescue” frequently? i always thought it was bc you can hit from the rough with less chance of the club getting caught up?

There's no spot on the card to write HOW you did it....

Good point Gribbles and thanks for the reply! I didn’t think of that. I definately do get in the rough my share of times but haven’t really tested out the hybrid when I do.
Maybe if i stick to the irons and 3 wood on the fairways, and give the hybrid a go in the rough I might develop a fondness to it and keep it in the bag!

I find it’s the only club I still have an inclination to top the ball with. Hence the frustration.

I

whoops that should have been quoted last post:)

I have a 18* 5wd and its a pretty good club, although it can go very high. I think the hybrid will shoot a little lower. I am considering putting a 2i hybrid in the bag instead.

you might be trying to hit it too hard, these clubs (in my experience) respond to a delicate touch. Take it easy and just hit it like a small fairway wood, which is what they are. Shorten up your backswing at the practice range and work a few buckets with it, you’ll get the idea.

3 bad shots and 1 good shot is still a 4....
Golf is played in a very small area, the 6 inches between your ears...

One swing to hit the ball,
one swing to find a score,
One swing you bring to all,
And on the fairway find them.

I used to have both a 3 wood a 5 wood and a 19 degree hybrid. But I found that my 5 wood gives me the similar distance to my 3 wood so I ditched it and just have the hybrid. I found that with hybrid you can hit down (when the ball is in a hole) at the ball and get decent distance.

This is the real value of these clubs, their versatility is tremendous. I found I can hit it in almost any situation, it’s just a matter of confidence and some practice. I’ve hit it from close to trees and had to get it up very quickly indeed, and then carried it 240m, or I can hit a low running draw that rolls forever, great on par 5s when you inside a dogleg and need to get it around left quickly then get some distance. Or I can hit it on longish par 3s and stop it fairly quickly as well….and mine is 19deg.

5 wood for me. Usually when I’m in the rough I’m behind a bush or tree or some other obstacle, & there is no better club than the 3 iron to hit a low or medium height slice or hook through the window, or just to punch out and roll it down the fairway.
Hybrids just don’t cut the mustard like woods or irons.

Anyway, can someone find out how many of the worlds top 10 pros use Hybrids?

Yes, sometimes I surprise myself. Not bragging, I put it down to the club, and the way it encourages me to just hit it and forget it.

This club has saved me upwards of 6 strokes a round. It NEVER leaves my bag, I leave my 3 wood at home before I leave it at home. It has a range of between 170m and 250m.

250 for a 19 hybrid…sorry mr woods this forum is for amatuers…..oh please

I carry a 5 wood and 22 hybrid…thier distance is similar but ball flight is different

5 wood I can draw and shape ball at will ..22 deg hybrid goes arrow strait and pretty high

I carry a 13 degree 3 wood (220m) and a 18 degree 5 w(200m) and then used to have a 3 iron , 4 iron, etc. but i found that the 3 and 4 irons had minds of their own at times so i went on “the journey “of investigating these hybrids. Only found one that I could hit ( cobra 2 hybrid) which belonged to someone else so that was no good. tried about 5 or 6 different brands without anything that gave me a constant ball flight or distance.

So i started searching for higher lofted fairway woods as i hit my 3 and 5 pretty well. I chanced upon a Callaway big bertha 11 Wood. (yep you read it right) It has 24 degree loft i think ( not written on it) and it is sensational. I can hit it over a 30m tree from about 40m away and still carry it 170+ .

I think some swings just suit the hybrids and some suit fairway woods.

I’ll try to ease back a little bit. I probably tend to overswing it a bit.

You’ve given me hope. I’ll hang onto the hybrid and give it a shot.

Can’t wait to hit the fairways tomoz!

I recently (not more than 5 weeks ago) bought a 7 wood (21 degree) and about a week or so later bought an 18 degree hybrid which was on sale at power golf. I found the hybrid is much easier to use than the wood. Maybe because the shaft is shorter I don’t know. I use the hybrid off the tee and off the deck. Today I PARed hole 1 485m Par 5 at Castle Hill (hybrid – hybrid – 3i – 2putts) the rest were shocking!!!

I always remember what mizuno rep told me on demo day a few months back. “Hit it like you hit irons, treat it as irons” he said as I pulled out a hybrid from his bag. May be you can apply his tip.

Fellas … question if I may. Does 18 degree hybrid suppose to generate more distance than a longer more lofted 7 wood? I found I can hit farther with hybrid than wood, may be I’m not hitting my 7 wood properly. any thoughts?

Cheers

If you can hit a 19* hybrid 250m, that is a damn good shot. The average on TOUR for a driver is only about 260m, and thats with a driver…... I can hit a 5 wood about 200m if i hit it flush with a little roll. Id say around the 180m carry mark.

Had a decent hit at the range tonight and treated the hybrid as an iron and it was great. I realised I’d been trying to sweep the ball too much, as opposed to hit down on it like an iron.
I’m a fan of the hybrid now and will keep it in the bag!
thanks for all the tips!
