It’s only a few days until the second major of the season, and my personal favourite, the Open Championship, this year at Royal Birkdale. The Open comes to Royal Birkdale for the ninth time this July, and competitors will find a course that is 155 yards longer than the challenge presented to them in 1998, the last time the event was played here. The extra length is relatively inconsequential, however, compared to the tightened bunkering, newly-introduced mounds and, in the case of some holes, altered playing lines. The philosophy of the changes – which affect 16 of the 18 holes – is to reward strategic play and accurate shotmaking. This also marks the first anniversary of the retooled PGA Tipping competition. With $2 mil up for grabs the heat will be on the leaders. There are still a few squads that need to get their list in order, but there should be a very competitive weekend ahead.

To be part of the action, you have until Thursday afternoon to get in your new entries or squad changes. The top 3 squads win fab prize packs from Vision Golf – cutting edge golf balls, sweet caps and happy Jumbo Tees to put a grin on your face when you hit it off the toe into a hazard. Main Competition Thread and Rules You choose 4 players, one from Oz, one from the US, one from somewhere else, and one from anywhere. Total ranking points have to be 10.00 or less. You can only make one change to your AT&T National squad, and there are no alternates allowed this weekend. OK get to it ladies and gents…

Hey Muntz, am I right in thinking that the first tee time on Thursday (UK time) is actually about 3.pm Thursday here. I’m not real good with the world clock stuff, but I think we are 9 hrs in front of them.
The key to success is to learn to do something right, then do it right every time. Oh I wish..... |
|
Yup, we are 9hours in front. Its a pain in the neck when I try phoning my brother and parents in Bonnie Scotland.
Greg Norman, proof that lots of sex before a major competiton is
good for you. ;) |

We have kicked off and scoring is looking U.G.L.Y. A lot of Aussies out early. Badds, Fowler, R Green, Jones, Ogilvy, Parry, Strange. I’m off home, Foxtel kicks off in 10 minutes.

Spectators braved early morning heavy rain to make their way to the first tee to watch Australian Craig Parry hit the first shot in the 137th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. Right on cue at 6.30am the rain eased and Parry hit a three-wood to get the world’s oldest golf championship under way. Defending champion Padraig Harrington will not like the prospect of heavy, wet rough as he nurses his injured right wrist when he plays at 7.58 with former Open winner Justin Leonard and double US Open champion Retief Goosen. The last three-ball leaves the first tee at 4.21 on a day when a mix of rain and wind will put a premium on accuracy.

Open Championship – First Round Update Talk about luck of the draw. The morning groups faced heavy wind and rain, making for a grim march around Royal Birkdale with woolies and wet weather gear. Scores ballooned like the padded panda bears the players resembled. By the afternoon, conditions had improved somewhat, and not surprisingly, that’s where we managed to extract a few sub-par rounds. Nice to see the Aussies kicking a## and Greg Norman having another moment in the sun (erm, drizzle). How long before he chokes? Tom Watson also had a fair round considering he played in the worst of it. (Sandy Lyle made the much wiser decision to stop after nine holes and watch the action from the hotel bar with a hot pastie and an ale instead.) Look who else popped up… Rocco !! He’s obviously developed a taste for contending in majors, and with Tiger at home bouncing his baby on his knee (maybe not) maybe he can complete the fairy tale and lift the claret jug with a cheeky grin on his mug. McDowell has also backed up from his win at Loch Lomond. I wanted to pick him, but didn’t have the shekels to spare. -1 R Mediate G McDowell R Allenby

(PS: Muntz is surviving on triple-shot lattes after watching the Aussies well into the wee hours before his eyelids eventually lost the battle.)

Open Championship – First Round Leaders Kind of embarassing, but go me! The outright first round leader is me myself, posting a very respectable first round total of +3. And all four of my players are in the upper regions of the leaderboard, so (touch wood) I can still cover one guy who has a meltdown in the next three rounds. After coming T4 in the US Open I’m looking for a podium finish this time around – a win would put me in the upper echelon of the tipping leaders. Muntz: S Appleby +2 B Snedeker +2 F Jacobson +1 B Bryant Ev = +3 Not far behind is a top 10 tipster, Toto, with a similar entry, but with a DNP in the mix as well. He’s never changed his squad (it’s currently valued at 9.99) but has racked up almost 2 million in season earnings nonetheless. He won his third event, the PODS, and has a bunch of other top 10s. Toto: S Appleby +2 B Snedeker +2 M Weir +1 J Senden DNP = +5 Then we have a tie for third between barryl and kyle, who are 15th and 20th on the money list. Gee, Sneds is a common link to all the leaders, probably as most of the other Yanks have posted big numbers. barryl: S Appleby +2 B Snedeker R Imada +7 R Fisher +2 = +6

Unlike Thursday’s first round of the 137th Open Championship, Friday’s second round began under marginally better conditions. Though the skies were still packed with clouds that looked like they could explode at any moment, the wind was manageable and no rain was falling, giving the field a better chance at solving Royal Birkdale. Van de Velde is -2 thru 8, and is now T7 overall. Greg Norman birdied the 1st and is now co-leader of the Open! Camilo Villegas has blown out from +6 to +8 after two holes and will be lucky to make the cut without a quick turnaround.

looks like your comments about Camilo made him pull his head out of his ass and prove you wrong he is now having the round of the day at -5 maybe he was just letting Pampling take all his strokes +5 so far i think he is a lost cause for this cut
|
|
goodness a quadruple bogey for Holmes on the 2nd looks like Zach and Camilo will have to contend with the weight of +28 from their teem mates if I am to make any cash

Yes, the round of the day will no doubt be from Mr Villegas, who scorched around in 65 – unthinkable given the general scoring trend today, and 11 strokes better than his score from yesterday. He had 8 birdies including all of the last 5 holes – absolutely amazing. But its the Shark on top by one at this stage, after an even par round with three birdies. Norman had some fantastic saves on the closing stretch. He put a wedge on the front of the green on 18, then gunned his birdie putt off the green at the back. No matter, he holed the 20 footer coming back from the fringe and walked off as the outright leader. Phenomenal. Some bad scores? Jimenez 82, Snedeker +8 thru 17, Bryant 78 (sob). And JB Holmes started with a 5 and an… 8. Ouch.

Progress Scores Anyone with Villegas must be rubbing their hands with glee. suspect and brentp have jumped into the top two spots off Camilo, and brettmaverick is fourth. The projected cut is +7 or +8, so this leaderboard could change pretty drastically once that comes into effect. A few squads have managed to improve on their round 1 scores: suspect and brentp are at -3, kevvy -2 and AndyHammers -1. +6 suspect

Open Championship – Second Round Update Hard to believe that a 53 year old that has missed 3/3 cuts in weak events on the PGA Tour this year is one stroke out of the lead at the halfway point. Greg Norman tees off at 11:40 PM (AEST) in the final pairing with KJ Choi, who birded the last two holes to take the outright lead. Also good to see David Duval contending after many years in the wilderness, and Harrington backing up as defending champion despite some injury concerns. -1 KJ Choi The cut was drawn at +9, with these players crashing out: John Daly +29

This is going to be another tournament where missing the cut may be a godsend…..

Open Championship – Second Round Leaders The Muntz challenge sputtered out with Snedeker missing the cut (+11) and Bart Bryant also blowing out to +8. Suspect and brettmaverick pounced taking a slim lead at the halfway point. They are ninth and tenth on the money list so far – the 2 mil. would be enough to put either player up to #1 ! suspect: S Appleby +3 Trahan DNP R Goosen +6 C Villegas +1 = +10 kevvy brings up third place two shots further back – he’s had a DQ and a missed cut in his two events so far, so a podium finish would be a nice way to get his hands on a Vision prize pack. kevvy: R Allenby +2 C Villegas +1 P Casey +9 J Kelly +20 = +12

Open Championship – Second Round Leaderboard The top 5 squads all have Villegas. Our NAGA so far is bucks05, 3rd on the money list: G Ogilvy +11 B Snedeker +11 JB Holmes +16 Carl Pettersson DNP = +76 Best rounds of the day: Dougie 68, kevvy 69 Note that brentp is currently in 4th – he’s been in every event, but is yet to take home a cheque. +10 brettmaverick suspect

Go Brent Go!! Also, heres to seeing Villegas have a shocking 4th rnd. :-)
1-L, it is all there my friend. |
|
I’m storming up the leaderboard!! clear last after rd 1 I’ve had another good rd of 78 last night. At +50 i should be in the money going into the last rd. my calculations have the leaders on about +30. If only I had been brave enough to pick G.Norman rather than S.Strange as my last minute random aussie!!!

Open Championship – Third Round Update It was going to be hard to top the US Open with a wounded Tiger being stalked by a grinning Rocco, but I reckon this is right up there. In a gale force wind that saw Villegas go 14 shots worse than his second round, Greg Norman fought out a brilliant, gutsy 72 to take a two stroke lead going into the last day. Here’s hoping he can complete the improbably fairy tale and be the oldest winner of a golf major (Tom Morris set the current record in 1867 at the age of 48.) +2 G Norman He will be paired with Harrington, the 2007 champ versus the 1986 / 1993 champ. Should be an enthralling nights viewing. Some of the bigger numbers:

Open Championship – Third Round Leaderboard Villegas giveth and Villegas taketh away. The leaderboard has tightened up considerably after Camilo shot 79, with eight squads now within four strokes of the lead. Scoring should be a bit easier today with quieter weather predicted (play was almost halted when balls on the 8th and 10th were being blown around). So it’s anyone’s Championship at this stage. Well, everyone except sarg and bucks. +30 kevvy
