Gavin Coles - St Jude Classic

Did anyone see what happened to Gavin on the 18th as he took double and as a result missed the playoff?

He missed the fairway in the right rough, 2nd into a bunker with a long 3rd shot, 3rd shot over the green, chip tan by about 6 feet then he missed his bogey putt.

Hi LintzMan,

Unfortunately, Gavin kind of butchered the final hole. Too bad, really, because Gavin was having the best performance of his PGA TOUR career.

The 18th at the TPC Southwind is a dog-leg left, with water in play all down the left side.

Gavin aimed right and attempted to draw a 3W, but he held on a tick too long and pushed his 263 yard drive into the first cut of rough to the right.

This gave Gavin a good angle in, but he had 204 yards to the pin, which was cut hard to the left-center of the green.

Gavin didn’t quite catch his approach well, and he kind of floated it out to the right, and short, landing in the front right greenside bunker. He had a horrible downhill lie to a green which ran away from him, with water on the other side, 77 ft. away from the hole.

Gavin kind of skulled his out from the bunker and it scurried across the green and into the rough, just before the water, leaving him short-sided, with a 25 ft. chip for par.

And indifferent chip ran 12 feet by the hole and, when he missed his bogey putt, Gavin had to settle for a very disappointing double-bogey six.

Gavin still ended up placing tied 8th, his best finish on the PGA TOUR since his t-7th at the 2005 Houston Open. This top ten, along with top 20s in his two previous TOUR starts, puts Gavin in a very good position to retain his TOUR card for 2009. We’ll be pulling for him.

Fingers crossed for Gavin.

Thanks for the updates. I was just flicking channels and Fox was replaying the final round so got to see Gavin’s bunker shot on 18.

Yeah he was unlucky. Bit of a choke on the 18th. Hard hole though. How was Allenbys form on the first playoff hole. Taking an iron (i presume 2 iron) and booming it like 280 yards. He was longer than the other two who hit 3 and 4 woods. What a player.

The 3 shots hit into the 2nd playoff hole were probably the 3 closest all day!! These guys are good :)

Nice to see the little turd miss out. What goes around comes around.

The MP32s are here. The results are promising!

Trophies not won on the tee though ;)

Leonard held his nerve better then Immelman and Allenby on the Par 3 green (16th?) for the second play off hole – thats what makes a great player

a bit harsh… i wouldn’t have called him “little”

I don’t think Gavin has a full pga tour card this year. He is still playing events on the Nationwide tour and won earlier this year. Since that win he hasn’t played too many Nationwide events and but has posted some decent TOUR finishes as you mention. Hopefully his gamble in playing TOUR events over Nationwide pays off and he gains full exemption in 09.

..i'll come up with one soon..

Gavin simply choked.
He was thinking about the money.
I believe if Gavin had a PGA victory under his belt, he would have gone for the win over the money. A good experience for him to learn from.
BTW how many players double bogeyed the 18th on the final day?
Answer Gavin Coles.
How many double bogies did Gavin have in the tournament?
Answer one.
Gavin choked badly.

Just thought I’d revive this thread, as Gavin has fired a second-round 62 to storm into tied 2nd at the US Bank Championship, in Milwaukee.

Of course this event, and its victor, will be much over-looked this weekend. But Gavin still has a shot at a big win.

sad

I realise i’m going back a while here, but i was just wondering if “the_phantom” can read everyone’s thoughts, or just Gavin Coles’?
And, is Gavin Coles aware that the_phantom knows exactly what he’s thinking at any given time?
