What is it with Americans of 'a certain age'?

In Ryder Cup years why do septic tanks of a certain age start playing well?

Couple of years ago it was Jay Haas, now it seems like it’ll be Kenny Perry.

Its great from a European point of view as 5 games in 3 days is way too much for most people never mind someone almost fifty!

I resemble that remark….and I bet I could play 5 games in 3 days after a some basic conditioning on YOUR ear….. geez all your doing is playing golf, it isn’t a marathon after all, and physically it isn’t that hard.

Cliff is correct if you are fit then there is nothing stopping you.

My parents are on a walking holiday at the moment they are both over 70 and would be walking 20+ ks a day with a day pack so i don’t think it would be too surprising that someone 25-30 years younger would be able to manage 2 rounds of golf a day.

I have also seen 20 year olds struggle to manage 9 holes.

Kumbaya! I have gravity poisoning!

I think it depends on fitness rather than age. Some older Americans (and Australians, or any other nationality) are good golfers but look like puddings, and would find intensive golf over 3 days very taxing. Some young golfers look the same. :-)

I don’t think it’s good to stereotype everyone approaching 50 as lacking endurance. While there’s been an increase in obesity at one end of the continuum, I think there’s also been a huge change at the other end … many people in their 50s and 60s are quite fit and more like the 40 year olds of previous generations.

I’m 57 and still run up to 10km through hills four times a week. I’m still an active hiker, and two years ago walked the length of the Australian Alpine Walking Track (700km).

If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ?

I reckon playing Ryder Cup would be more taxing on their mental well-being than their physical endurance.

Don’t forget they play 4 rounds (competition) per week plus practice rounds, range and gym time anyway.

and it’s not like they have to carry their bag or anything!!!!

Living in a slightly remote area as We do up here Pennants is arranged in divisions with 4 clubs to a division & 4 divisions. we play our Pennants on a promotion relegation system. This year we are Playing at Pioneer Valley Which means an early start Friday morning . A 5 hour bus trip & 18 holes of practice when we arrive. Sat morning 6 o-clock start ,play 36 holes ,Sun. 6 o-clock start again, play final round 18 holes stay for presentation & then the 5hour trip home. we do this trip every 4 years. the others being shorter trips. Most of these players in B & C grade pennants are over 50 years of age & have no trouble with this program.I might add we walk all 72 holes as well. In no way would I class myself as fit as Publish, but 72 holes in 3 days is no problem for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.

A bad day on the golf course is better than no golf at all. :(

I’m nearly 61 and 72 holes in three days in 28-30C temp, well just done 90 ( 2 times 36 and one times 18 ) over the past three days. I just love seeing 25 year olds falling by the wayside !! The only reason the last day was 18 was that it pissed down with rain, with thunder and lightning and we couldn’t play!! By the way my playing buddy is 62!!

Perhaps I should have changed what I posted ever so slightly.

I should have said, to play 5 games in 3 days and to play to the highest standard in the world during those 3 days with many millions all over the world watching, is too much for the young fit men but even harder for someone like Perry who looks like a bit of a salad dodger in any event!
