Forgive me if this has been discussed before but what do you consider a fair price for a game of golf ?

I couldn’t imagine paying that much for a game and I don’t think I ever will. There will be alot of people with alot of money who may do it for the fact that the course will probably never be busy. One course i’d love to play is Cape Kidnappers in NZ but there’s no way i’m laying down $300 – 400.

Anything $100 or under for the better tracks is reasonable although many seem to be dropping thier prices lately, to attract more players I imagine.
A bad day on the golf course is better than no golf at all.

This is a common opinion, not just among us average joe golfers, but even the pros are expressing it… what’s the point of having a lovely course with no one playing it? You may as well charge half and at least golfers will actually play it….

Where is Twin Creeks? It cost me $68 to play The Vines on New Years Day and ended up on the Lakes Course with a buggy, I found that good value. The Vintage with an ISG voucher is $72-$94 To play a top course $100-$150 wouldn’t worry me, what does it cost to play St Andrews? I’m sure most of would pay whatever it is.

Three years ago in the high season the Old Course was 120 pounds – which was AUD $300 then and AUD $240 now. Probably gone up a little since then. I think there are more expensive courses in Scotland – anyone know how much Gleneagles costs? I forked over 80 quid ($200) for a round on the Old Course in the shoulder season on a perfect spring afternoon and never felt the money leave my wallet. (PS: See avatar.)
Reverse every natural instinct you have and do just the opposite of what you are inclined to do and you will probably come very close to having a perfect golf swing. - BEN HOGAN, POWER GOLF |

The reason i ask is I recieved an email from Twin Creeks offering me a game for $130.00 with nothing else but a cart thrown in. I said to my wife good track but not at that price Played there a few weeks back with a member, only cost $65.00 with a cart. Was hardly anybody else on the course, so yeah, apart from members, I think they are struggling. Good course with a bucket load of bunkers. If your in the rough either side, just get a new ball out of the bag. Because its cooler now, the brown snakes shouldn’t worry you that much.
The key to success is to learn to do something right, then do it right every time. Oh I wish..... |

It’s only worth what people are prepared to pay… Kennedy Bay being a classic example

I travel around ( hence the nickname) and play a lot of courses. I have an aim to play as many of the “top 100” lists as i can, but i keep finding new lists – top 50 country courses; top public access, etc. So the list of courses to play keeps growing. I have played 68 of the current AGD top 100 list. So those are my qualifications to comment. You can get on most courses as a member of an interstate golf club as long as you are willing to pay the freight. For a “one off. tick it off the list” I am willing to fork out whatever is required. The most i have been quoted was Huntingdale at $192-50. This was about 2 years ago. I found a cheaper one at the time that i hadn’t played. The most i have paid is $170 for Metropolitan in 2003. Royal melbourne, Victoria and Royal Adelaide were $160 at the times i played them . I find that $120-$140 is fairly common but if you do your research you often find a cheaper day maybe once a month when you can get on. I think Coolum was a good example where they had an open day on a Thursday that was only $80 with a cart which was magnificent value for that course. Have played a couple that i pulled strings to get on (sanctuary cove Pines; The grand) that would have cost a substantial amount if I had been successful incoming thru the front door. ONly course i played overseas was the Plantation at Kapalua in Maui. Home of the Mercedes championship. I think that cost me $200US as a resort guest. Have played better courses in Australia but it was fun all the same. ken

I played the Plantation course @ Kapalua on Maui in October last year while on my honeymoon. Got ass – raped for $295US!

To answer the original question, I’ve paid $150 to play RM on a charity day in Australia and this is the most I’m willing to pay + CPI. I just paid $120 yesterday for a round as a guest at The National and it was worth every dollar. The most I have paid out of my own pocket was Glen Eagles, which was £220 (at the time that was $550). The most that has been paid for me to play was £260 (at the time $650) at Wentworth, having said that one of the times I was playing there the World Champs was on and over on one of the other tees on one of the other courses was Ernie Els teeing off. You can’t pay for that!

I paid £200 to play 36 at Muirfield a couple of weeks ago. That was pushing the boat out for me and I’ll not be doing it again. On the same trip we paid £120 to play Kingsbarnes. Have to say, I’d play that again in a heartbeat, it is the most stunning course I’ve ever played. One way I would justify it is to get a really good accommodation deal. Save money on the hotel to leave more for the golf and beer. Locally, I wouldn’t pay more than £20. Generally I look to get signed on by members to keep the cost down.

I agree Styles, Kingsbarnes is in my top 3 courses that I have played. I just got an email from them today for a Pro-am in September. Looks lie fun, pity I’m now on the other side of the planet.

There is always a point at which a round of golf becomes an experience verses a round of golf. Marquee courses deserve to charge a premium because of the history, or the initial setup cost with being there in the 1st place. If St Andrews was 500 quid, I’m sure they would still fill the place, just because. That said there are some pretty ordinary places now charging $30 – $50 that should still be $15 and be grateful for everyone that comes through the door! Ironically I paid $40 a reasonably well known track a couple of months ago and felt completely and utterly screwed. The greens had just been chopped, it was full of hackers and it was generally a fairly depressing sight. I specifically asked if the greens were OK when I rang and was informed they were good and I asked if they were busy with bookings to be told there was no one around. Such is life.
