Jaggy Hole-In-One question....

OK, here’s the situation…I played at a course called Hillcrest in Fort Lauderdale today and was playing fairly well. Got to the 11th and I skinnyed an 8 iron and it skimmed the small shrubs in front of the tee, hit the rough and tracked towards the hole…it hit the pin and stopped dead, didn’t go in, my playing partners gave the big ‘OHHHHHHH’...anyway got me thinking ‘would I want my first hole in one to be a jaggy shot in a social round?’ I was sort of glad that it did not go in for the reason it was a jaggy shot but then part of me wishes I had got it so I can say I got a hole in one…what do you think? – do you care if your hole in one is a jaggy hole in one? – Is a jaggy hole in one as good as a good shot?...I suppose they all count the same in the end.

A bad day at golf is better than a good day at work.

Mate they all do count! But have to say I’d rather hit a nice iron in with a little backspin for an ace rather than a lucky mishit. I had a bird on a par3 at my course last week where my tee shot was crappence, but i hit a tree and kicked next to the hole (about 1.5 feet). always happy with a bird but felt like i didn’t really earn it yeah?

whats that reality tv saying, “its not the destination, its the journey”?

still i’d take the ace any day though! :-)

You don’t need to draw pictures in the score card:)

Having said that one of the guys at our club jagged an ace in one of his first ever games, sculled it along the ground and in, he is very embarressed every time someone asks about it (usually in the bar and they notice his name on the honour board)

I think it’s OK to claim an ace under those circumstances as long as you celebrate it by riding your club Happy Gilmour style. :)

One man’s mis-hit is another man’s good course management. :)

I may well have the worst short game in Australia.

I’ve never had one, but many times I’ve played a good shot only to have a dodgy bounce. very frustrating. Claim it I reckon. who cares how you got it.. when talking to strangers, just change the story :)

..i'll come up with one soon..

Nup. Disagree.

A bloke at work got one by hooking it way left and bouncing it off a hill onto the green. The fact that he got to write 1 on his score card doesn’t give it the genuine thrill of hitting a “perfect” shot that ends up in the cup.

Anyone holed out after hitting a ball OOB or into a water hazard?

I got an eagle after putting a ball in a water hazard…drove into a small creek about 18m from a par-5 green, took my drop and then dropped the next shot…although it was a lucky bounce too :)

Reminds me of the story about this golfer who was known for cheating. He once had a Hole in One and wrote 0 on his card ! Derrrr…....

A hole in one is a hole in one. If I bounce one off some ladies head on the cart path, hit a tree, roll down a hill, across the green, and into the cup, you better be damn sure it will be marked down as a “1” on my score card and I’ll be proud of it either way.

Of course luck is involved. But when your ball is hit straight and the right distance, you’ve done your part, the rest is physics and good fortune.

Missing the green altogether with a crappy shot then getting a fluke bounce onto the green… well, I just don’t think it would be the same.

You could say that no-one “means” to hole out from a bunker, but the pros do it fairly regularly, whereas I’ve never seen anyone do it in a comp. Skill to be able to get the ball close does come into it.

Muntz,

I like the word you mentioned “skill”....

The meaning of skill in regards to golf is ” Thou shall practice night and day”.. The more you do it correctly, the more fair bounces you get. This eliminates bad bounces off fairways into hazards and introduces better bounces on the green when you can spin it back or work your shot into a green. Go down to your practice bunker at you course one afternoon, do it every afternoon Muntz if you really wish to improve and do not leave that bunker until you start holing shots. It is the same for hitting chips and pitches. Trust me. It pays off.

I agree, they’re tuff enuff – I play at a course that has a shortish par 3 where you can hit to a hillside to the left of the green & if you can angle your ball well enough it can run all the way to the pin (depending on pin placement, of course!!!) – no I’ve never done it!

Golf balls are like eggs - they're white, sold by the dozen & you need to buy fresh ones every week!

agreed, but that doesn’t mean it was deliberate. I personally have had a hole in one, however, everyone I have talked too will tell you it was lucky, regardless of how close they hit it.

Classic example I suppose is I was playing, my 12 year old was along for the ride, bit of fun, I hit a close approach from a LONG way out, he says, gee dad that was lucky. I told him luck didn’t come into it, I mean’t to play the shot, and I played it.

So you say tamarto, I say tamayto, same thing in the end I suppose. My point was it is always lucky, just some are a bit luckier than others really.

One swing to hit the ball,
one swing to find a score,
One swing you bring to all,
And on the fairway find them.

You are so wrong in that statement. I would have to guess that you have NEVER scored a hole in one. We know that a certain amount of luck is involved, the same as a chip in or long putt, but I ask the question “where are you aiming at” !!

Had a mate who was running alte to the first tee at Taree – 190m par 3 with about 40m drop to the green. His partners were already halfway to the green, he yells out, plays his shot which he pulls left near the OB fence. Swears appropriately and grabs another ball for a provisional (stroke rd). At this time the following group are now approaching the tee. He hits his provisional – you guessed it – 2 bounces and in the hole.

The following group hadn’t seen the firts shot so they are busy congratulating him while he is just trying to get away in ahurry so he can catch up. – now it gets better

He gets down to the green to find that his first ball is still in and he makes a bogey with it!!!

On the subject of lucky/unlucky shots – I’m sure that Kenny Perry would have taken it if his second shot to the playoff hole today had hit the tree and stopped a foot from the hole. Instead it bounced off the tree into the dam and he lost.

I know a bloke who bounced one off a buggy that was waiting next to the next tee and back across the green and into the hole. Thats one of the better ones I’ve heard of.

I’m not saying there wasn’t skill involved, but no one can tell me a hole in one was deliberate.

What difference does it make whether I have had on or not? I haven’t but so what? I would still say it was lucky if I had one…..

I plya on a course that has bery soft greens. Most balls , even when hit with a long iron or wood, bounce once or twice at most. If hit with a short iron it will often plug in its divot or just roll a couple of inches from the divot.

Compare this with a course that has hard fast greens and the chances of having an ace are greatly increased. The increase is only in the “luck and physics” dept – no difference in my skill if i play at either course.

my point is i guess that we are always trying to get the ball in the hole, but there are so many outside influences impacting upon it that the element of luck is what decides our fate in the end.

Hopefully one day the golf gods will be on my side

I can see what cliff means guys, I can honestly say when I set up for a par three I might think to myself I’m going left or right or short to avoid a hazard, take a bunker out of play etc. But I have NEVER said to myself, right i’m going to try to put it in the hole.

This is not to suggest that some of you other guys don’t do that, I don’t profess to be a mindreader lol!

But i think (and apologies if i am wrong) that Cliff may be referring to this type of theory?

Still, a one is a one, and like i said previously i might not get as much satisfaction out of “lucky bounce” ace as a crisp straight one, but once I’ve tried both I’ll let you know lol

He gets down to the green to find that his first ball is still in and he makes a bogey with it!!!

That’s superb! How about if you holed out with your first ball then found you had teed off from the wrong markers? Aaaaargh….
