Lie angles and club fitting, a bit confused now.

Hi guys, I have been fitted 3 times before and all have given me different 5 iron angles so now I am getting confused. I am between 5ft 8 and 5ft 9. I added my height as I saw on another posting before someone said that a person of that height would probably need more flatter lie angles. Anyways in about the year 2000 i got a fitting done at golf world and they said i was about a 64 degree 5 iron. In 2003 i went to golf club innovations and was told about a 62.5 degree 5 iron. I wont mention names but he is highy regarded and i told him my last 5 iron and he said there is no way you could be that upright. In the last year or so i was measured by another golf fitter who worked out about 63.5 for a 5 iron. All these measurements were done on lie boards. I’m really confused and I dont think i have had some drastic changes in my swing that would have changed these measurements. Anyways any advice and who should I go to see to get a fitting (I’m in Brisbane). I just want to do a fitting to get specs and dont want to buy clubs, i might then get my clubs adjusted by them.
Cheers guys.

Oh and a few more questions, will a change of ball position effect the lie angle and if so how? When a club is longer how much does it effect lie angle and by which way eg if I am a 63.5 and 38 inch 5 iron what would happen if the club was 38.5 inches? Also how much does the shaft flex effect the lie angle?

Cheers

If you go longer clubs you will need flatter lie angles.

If you go a softer shaft you may need lie angle to be a fraction more upright due to droop.

Ball position is an interesting one, part of me wants to say it will not make a difference, but might have to think that through some more.

It is hard to know who is right regarding your lie angles, do you know if those clubs were all the same length?

down and out…did ya get that?

As I mentioned a few days ago, fitting is an art and a science. I would be concerned if you have been given 3 different 5 iron angles from “different people” getting fitted for the weapons of your choice. Thing is, many people are in the process of trying to change/improve their skill/swing to improve and they have a lesson off one pro, go to another person for a fit, change again, lada lada lada. It is great to try and get the best fit for your game but at times, give it a rest okay and just enjoy what you have.

Yeah, It’s possible each of the fitters are seeing different things in your swing. One fitter may think you come over the top (slice) hence you need your irons more upright. Another may think differently or not take your swing path into account. It’s possible your swing may have become more inside over the years and now you don’t need clubs so upright. Shaft lengths obviously had an effect on lie angles. I guess you need a technical explaination from the fitters.

I’m 6’ 2” and use a 63 deg 38.5” 5i. This is how I was fitted in 1992 and 2 independent fitting in 2007 showed nothing changed. If I got around more it’s possible fitting results may be different;-)

I would suggest you go to Lawnton Drummond Golf – I know a Pro (northern suburbs Golf Club) who made a statement to me that the young man there Andrew is a wizz at fitting – worth a try anyways! I also believe Drummond have the best fitting system.

Political Correctness is doctrine fostered by a delusional minority and by the media, which holds forth the proposition it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Gotta agree with Ditty here.

Drummond Lawnton are very good. I have used them a bit since they opened.

Andrew is very good and also a nice young chap.

My question is could i go to drummond and have my specs done on their equipment without me actually having to buy clubs?

Yeah, this whole fitting thing turns into a nightmare.

Have been looking around for new irons and in the 4 places I have looked I have been ‘measured’ and given 4 different specs.

I have been informed I need shafts +1”, +0.5”, standard and – 0.5”, won’t even bother with the lie angle specs!

BTW:- I am 6’1” with longish arms so on the wall chart they use for hand to ground measurement I come up standard!?

No wonder people buy off the rack gear!

This fitting thing is like opening a can of worms. How can we trust someone to know they have it correct?

Hi toolish,
Yes they were all the same length club – 38 inch 5 iron.

Hi toolish,

The different way that the three people looked at your swing during the fitting is only part of the whole evaluation for your lie angles.
Even though you had the same specs with your 5 irons, it seems that you had atleast 2 different types of 5 irons. Which means that the shafts will not be exactly the same, either.
The lie board test is just a starting point for determining your lofts and lies.
Without seeing you hit balls and test in the flesh, then we can only surmise what the real lie angles are.
For what it’s worth, Gary Calder from GCI, is the Qld state junior coach, PGA member and a very astute clubfitter/builder. My money would be on him for the correct fitting ( sight unseen ). It is interesting that you have confused the issue by going to so many different people for opinions.
Part of finding the right lie angles for the individual is also about the feedback that we get from you, after setting you up for the first time. Usually the short irons are the best indication whether your lie angles are set correctly or not.
How does the other two businesses test your clubs to find out what the current angles are ?
How do they change those lie angles for you on your irons, after the lie board tests ?
Jon…

ps: If they can’t physically do any of the work on your bats and only quote numbers from a catalogue, then you need to look elsewhere to get them done with any confidence.

So true.

Hi,

Where is Gary Calder working now? I think i remember seeing a posting saying golf club innovations has closed down. Not sure if this is correct.

Cheers
