bad manners!

Thought i would have a spit about a incident that happened yesterday while playing. I was playing with a friend who doesn’t really know how to play golf but just enjoys hitting the ball and being out with friends. Off the tee she hit the ball and it rolled along the ground. A group of guys behind us found it funny and had a chuckle. Now I’m all for a laugh when someone hits a bad shot as long as the hitter thinks it is funny too, but to laugh at a stranger hitting a bad shot is just plain rude. So we let them through after the next hole. I haven’t played a lot in a large crowd but are my feelings justified or does this happen a lot?

I wouldn’t laugh, ‘cause I know I’d get up right after and do the same thing.

Why not spend the rest of the round watching them play and laughing at them every time they mishit… “JACKASS !!”

I personally prefer is someone laughs when I play a shank…it puts into perspective…makes me relax….after bad shot silence annoys me more… buts thats me…if somone is pissing themsleves laughing at himslef its ok to laugh a bit along with that person…difference is your laughing with NOT at the person…..theres a massive difference!!

Pretty bad form in my books and just picking up the game myself I know I hit the odd bad shot – all laughs between mates but to have complete strangers taking the piss isn’t too nice. I would have let them play through but I’m the kind of guy to have a laugh with them about it as well so it wouldn’t faze me too much. Cheers, Mick

Agree with you there Seven. Being laughed at by total strangers is definitely rude behaviour. Unfortunately I see this sort of thing happen quite often on the course. I am quilty of it myself on odd occasions but I laugh internally. I definitely wouldn’t laugh out loud to harass the other player. Maybe I am just a nice guy and those guys were just your average dickheads.

I have seen some properly hilarious shots on the golf course, I never laugh outloud because we’ve all been there and hit those same shots but to crack up out loud when you don’t know the person and they aren’t even in your group is just retarded. It displays a truely bad attitude that probably means they’ll never play anything close to decent golf of thier own.

the idea of laughing at them did get mentioned around the group but that would just bring us down to their level. Let them through, forget it happened and enjoy the rest of the day. its sad to see a great game ruined by a bunch of dicks.

of course, it might have been spectacularly bad timing, i.e. someone told a joke at the same time

I bet none of them have ever topped a shot along the ground! All four were probably born professionals!!!! Some people have no manners and very short memories :(

The fact it was female hitting the shot makes it worse as generally women on the golf course are more self conscious regarding what others think. I have laughed at plenty of shots, they have all been my own, or friends who I know well enough to know they will be laughing too.
down and out…did ya get that? |
|
Muntz, if they were telling jokes while someone is trying to tee off then that’s truely bad form as well.

A rule of thumb for me is laugh only if you know them well… I have always found a universal code in golf (well I thought it was universal) where golfers have a lot of sympathy when someone is struggling. You can usually tell after you have a horror hole (a real horror hole) or after a few consecutive wipes that people have sympathy.

I saw a guy get hit in the nuts on the course once from a stray shot. I laughed for 15 minutes. Was this poor form?
The fake Firey was just keeping the seat warm for me. |

Fyiripu. If you were that guy would you appreciate someone laughing at you when you got hit? You can call it whatever you like but it’s still harassment when your actions are not welcomed.
|
|
I only joke around with guys I know…laugh at topping, FRAT’s, 4 putts you know the normal things…it is poor form to take the p1ss off someone you don’t know. Fyiripu, not really poor form if you can take it…I find things like that funny too…obviously you are not running up to him and pointing and laughing at him and I assume you had some concern for him even though you found it funny. Genki, sheeeeesh, lighten up..Harassment?

only laugh between mates i feel, have a quick laugh, move on.
|
|
live4golf, if your behaviour has affected another person in a negative manner i.e. make that person feel embarassed, feel be-littled, play badly etc, then it’s harassment. I call it for what it is.

Welcome back Fyiripu – perhaps some of you guys have forgetton Fyiri’s potential for stirring the pot shall we say. Different year, but the same larrikin.

Please stop harassing me. :) I think the general gist of most of the posts is poking fun at mates is fine, I don’t think there are many (if any) golfers in general that outwardly make people they don’t know feel harassed or discriminated against.

Not trying to harass you mate. I just don’t like people trivialising any problem by saying things like it’s “just accident”, “involuntary reaction”, “no harm intended”, “not a form of harassment”, etc. First step to rectifying any problem is to recognise there is a problem to start with. But I respect the fact that maybe you haven’t experience or seen/recognise this particular problem and hence think all these comments were a bit over-board ;) You seem to be playing in nicer clubs then some of us. I play mostly in public courses so it’s not a surprise that many people I encountered have bad golf ettiquittes.

Nice thought, but …..... naaaah!
Golf balls are like eggs - they're white, sold by the dozen & you need to buy fresh ones every week! |
