Discussion for Tiger: The Power and the Passion

Look at the photo…can you say flat left wrist.

down and out…did ya get that?

It just makes sense that a person like Tiger would take every part of his training to the limit. That’s why he’s the best, no argument!

That was the first thing I noticed on the page! I’m in awe…

Interestingly, I was making the exact point a few weeks ago about resistance training and golf.

FHW – people! (The H & W stand for hard, work, I’ll let you work out the F for yourselves!)

Please help me guys..I have been away fighting a war for our country and my golf game has gone to the shit. Had a few clubs over there in the desert n we would dig a hole n make an imaginary hole to chip n putt n stuff. Used to play off 20 but I think seeing so much death has affected my golf game n I can’t play like I used to. I used to shoot 75 but my swing has been so badly affected. what can I do to get the swing back n take my war memories off the golf course.

Well Mr Bush, always here to give a helping hand to a digger. I am guessing you are an Aussie? If you played off 20, and used to shoot 75, many people here would love to have you as their 4BBB partner in the near future. I am not taking the piss out of you mate but just go out on a course, bash the crap out of the ball, have a few beers and you know what, I have a mate who can have 9 stubbies around a course and still break par. He is a freak.

Well you sound like you know what you r talking about there,I don’t drink though…should I smoke some hooter you think instead

Your in the army and you do not drink? I suggest you perhaps start to have a beer. Smoke some Hooter? Smoke the ball Mr. Bush…

Going back to the topic, I have over the last 6 months started to go to the gym for free weights 3 times a week and do 3 days of cardio a week. I also had some lessons as I never used to have a swing (I used to cover drive the ball).

Due to these 2 reasons I have gone from a 110 shooter down to an early 90’s and hit my first 87 last weekend (18 over). Not only have I cut scores I now hit 150 metres with a comfy 7 iron whereas I used to have to use a 5 iron.

If I have a week or two of slackness and miss a few gym sessions, I feel weaker over the ball and definitely have a looser/less consitent swing. Also hitting out of sand and hitting through thick rough is so much easier being stronger.

A great article which is worth reading, taking in and potentially living by!

Although tiger is undoubtedly stronger than anyone else, and more focussed, there is a BIG difference that wasn’t argued in detail there. And that’s technique.
No one else has a perfect swing. Adam Scott’s pretty swing elevated him to what? no 5, and thats with pretty streaky putting. But even Scott’s swing fluctuates.
Everyone else just plain doesn’t employ the absolute ideal swing mechanics.
Els is a little off balance on his follow through, cabrera has a bent left arm, mickelson collapses his right leg because of lack of flexibility, and jim furyk? forget it…
It must go hand-in-hand with tiger’s focus, but he is far and away more consistent because he is a perfectionist in dealing with his swing. If it’s not perfect, he’s dissatisfied.
A huge difference is in the way the other top golfers in the world take the swing they’ve more or less always employed (mickleson, furyk, JB holmes are great examples) and try to manipulate it into something a bit better with their coach.
What tiger has done twice in the past for months if not years, is completely scrap a method of swinging the club if it’s not absolutely perfect, and start again. He then hones his new swing and makes sure it stays perfect.
in ‘97 he won the masters by 12, realised that despite this his swing wasn’t perfect, and, true to his mantra of perfectionism, scrapped it.
In 2003 or 04, he realised the swing that had won him 4 majors in a row was putting undue stress on his body, so he scrapped it, lost the no. 1 ranking for a little while, and started again. What’s the product? The way he’s playing now; untouchable.

That’s a circular argument though, because the desire to rebuild his swing when he sees it as not being perfect that you are rightly talking about IS the work ethic the article discusses.

I think its just safe to say he is a phenomenon in the true sense of the word.

The undisclosed coach response to the player just puts into perspective what it takes to be like Tiger. I guess we only see him on the course and never see his workout routine and what he does on the range and gym to get to where he is.

I can’t believe he puts for three hours (if that is true!) It takes a ridiculous amount of mental strength and focus to practice putting for 3 hours every time you’re out there.

Selks13…believe me, he does put many hours in on a putting green. It does not take mental strength to be on a putting green for 3 or so hours. It may become boring for your average golfer but putting is what makes the difference in this game at times. I have been lucky enough to play a round of golf with him and I did shit myself mate when it happened. He is just a normal person with talent to burn…

You are kidding yourself if you think you can make it without hard-work.

Check out the wiry strength in Tiger’s arms – like girders. While you will find this sort of strength in all good pros Tiger is very well put together, especially in the arms, back and shoulders.

He is a big unit, mentally strong, dynamic and I cant think of anyone who comes close to him, stength-wise. He is a power golfer in the true sense of the word.

Oh yes, he can also finesse it with the flat stick.

Guys,
Do you think it’s talent or he’s more driven than any other man out there, Not sure if this is true never seen the article, but stuart appleby said how can we compete when tiger practices from 6am, plays then continues to 2am every morning, he only sleeps 4 hours? Stuart said I need I minimum of eight hours sleep.
Does anyone know if this is true?

I think there are lots of myths with Tiger.

However, I would suggest that when he works on something, it is 100% focus.

been there done that mate, talking to anyone about it and dont take to the piss or weed.
Try to focus on your swing down at the range, when your swings not working go over to the short game, talk to your pro about how he goes about his game, talk to the greenskeeper about the course and how he maintains it, what does he look at when sets the course up. just keep your thoughts moving in a positive direction.
I dont know if your still in, but if you can try and do so volunteer work there.
Relax on the golf course mate, dont patrol, your days are done come home.
cheers peter

If it is your dream, make it happen….

Yeah that’s a fair point. I guess it takes a lot of mental strength FOR ME to be on a putting green for 3 hours or so whilst for them, putts really can make the difference between a good round and a great round (which translates in hundred of thousands of dollars!)

I’m sure the drive to be the best and beat their competitors is what really drives them.
