Hi
I live in Strathpine area Nth Brisbane – I was a member of Beerwah Golf Club but since moving to Brisbane found it too far to travel – I’m thinking of joining either Wantima or Northlakes – is there anyone that has knowledge of either/both clubs that may help me make up my mind? Thanks

I also live in this area and currently a member at Pine Rivers.

Mate,

If I was in Brissy (It is my home away from home), I would advise you to consider Virginia, Nudgee or Redcliffe Golf Clubs on the Northside before Wantima or Northlakes.

Pine Riners – Darren still got the Pro-shop there?

go to Keperra just 20 mins from Strathpine, 27 good golf holes

You could also look at Caboolture. Northlakes looks like a good course though.

Giva Wantima a miss, Ordinary course & quite dangerous Northlakes is a good course but a little expensive. Pine rivers is ok if you like climbing up & down hills all day. I would recommend either Caboolture or Keperra. Or if expense is no problem give Northlakes a go. Used to live in lawnton so have played all of them except Keperra but know it.s reputation.
You blokes should start your own club. Sarg is in Narangba Ditty around Strathpine DDasey in that area & I believe theres a couple more ISGers in that area.

A bad day on the golf course is better than no golf at all. :(

Northlakes is fantastic! Its our social clubs favourite haunt! Great facilities and challenging course.

Also a bit easier to get on in terms of comp day.

See theres another one. Believe ther,s still a bit of spare land on Russell island. Plenty of water too.

North Lakes is always in immaculate condition but is a boring design requiring target golf to avoid penal hazards. Try Redcliffe, interesting design and bloody good value.

I’ve been a member at Keperra for about 5 months, It’s good value but I’ve got a few gripes, some of the tees are in poor condition (grass as long as semi rough & not level) especially on the third nine. generally the bunkers are in poor condition and the course is full of visitors outside of comp times so you will struggle to play a round in less than four and a half hours – I think this is because they are still half a million in debt. As a result I’m seriously considering North Lakes as an option for next year, a mate of mine went to the club this weekend to ask about membership and chatted with some members, they were very pleased with the time it takes to play in the weekend comps and the quality of the course speaks for itself, the practice facilities are top class and you can say what you like about the modern design but most serious golfers would give up a lot to play on a track of this quality every week. The only downside is the cost but if you compare it to say joining Brookwater or Pacific Harbour then it’s amazing value…

you do need to compare apples to apples though, from what I hear about Keperra it is a lot cheaper than North Lakes so maybe not as good condition wise but I have never had a problem getting a social game there and it is quite quick except for the weekend but that is the same everywhere, Keperra is 75 years old and the debt was over 1 million a few years back when they spent a lot of money improving the facilities so if it is down to half a million sounds like things are moving in the right direction

What’s the course like since the new head of greenskeeping has taken over, improved at all?

Agreed – I’m not saying Keperra is bad value for money but the frustration that I have is unfulfilled potential. With just a little more care and attention the course could be spectacular, the layout has lots of potential and the greens are in pretty good nick but the condition of some of the tees and the bunkers are letting it down at the moment and I don’t see that changing when the course is filled with visitors so they can generate as much green fee revenue as possible. Talking to other members I get the impression that progress has been slow and the situation is unlikely to change dramatically in the near future.

Yeah it’s definately on the improve. The course was suffering badly from the drought, but since the rain everything is on the improve and it is looking good.

The greens are starting to come along and it is good to have a`greenkeeper who has migrated over from North Lakes.

Thanhks Pom – good advice – I did join Pine Rivers but was the youngest there – they have a “live board” for handicaps and most of the members check it out weekly to ensure they’re still with us… anyway I’ll check out Keperra (think we’re playing there soon) and if not I’ll join Northlakes.. they have a silver special on at the moment which sounds okay to me… again, tks!

Chrisal – thanks for that info – I think the value is there also and a members comp round is finished in 3 1/2 hours probably due to it being all motorised… the silver membership seems like a deal but you pay $29 for a cart each game – the other membership is $2500 and it includes insurance, golf link and $300 bar/pro shop spending… sounds okay as I intend to play 3 times a week after I retire (soon)..

After much thought I’ve decided to join North Lakes. I played there again at the weekend and the course is as close to immaculate as you can reasonably expect. You can argue the merits of the design but the fact is it’s in the top 2 in Brisbane. Silver membership costs basically the same as Keperra if you hired a cart every time (the only difference is Keperra is walkable if you want) but the difference between the two golf courses is like chalk and cheese, North Lakes is a championship grade golf course & it is so far ahead in terms of condition that silver membership actually makes it a bargain in relative terms.

Hey Chrisal – I joined Northlakes recently when they decided to waive the nom fees – like the course – very challenging.. how are you finding it since joining?

Might have to join you two for a round next time I come to Brissy. Really enjoyed myself last time I played there.

I was fully intending to join Northlakes and I still would have been happy to sign on but shortly after I made that post we got some membership information (figures) from Pacific Harbour that we asked for a little while previously. They invited us to the club to show us the facilities and for a free round of golf. In the end I was blown away by experiance and the costs over 5 years was comparable to northlakes (joining fee is much higher at PH but annual subs for country membership with full playing rights is lower). In the end it was a tough decision as Northlakes is closer & has better practice facilities (especially short game area) but the course at Pacific Harbour is pure ‘golf porn’ and my wife can use the country club facilities while I play golf, which really cutts down on the guilt factor of spending all Weekend playing! I wil still be heading to NorthLakes for the odd game though but a wrist injury is keeping me from playing at all at the moment….

Mate that would be a pleasure – as long as we’re in the country – let me know when you’re heading this way…

Chrisal – what was the deal and what area do you live… ?
I’m now playing about 3 days a week so Northlakes suits me just fine – may blow out my handicap a bit though :-)

I live in Newstead in Brisbane so it is a long drive, about 1:10h so it was a tough call but the bonus is I can spend the day up there using the pool/gym etc to offset the travel time. The deal comes in at $300 a month for the first 3 years (8K joining fee plus $850 subs for ‘island escape’ (country) membership) then around 850 bucks for anual subs after that. Membership is also transferable so if you decide to leave after 3 years the club will re-sell your membership and give you back 80% of the fee at that time. You also get the Troon Golf advantage program which lets you play 2-3 rounds per year at each of the other Troon Golf managed courses in Australia, this includes Brookwater and Hope Island in Queensland and about 6 or 7 other courses in NSW and VIC.

So far I couldn’t be happier and I’m sure that would also have been the case at North Lakes as the two layouts are certainly in the premier league. In the end Pacific Harbour had the ‘x factor’ and that just edged it for me and the non-golf facilities are a bonus that make it worth the extra drive time.

It certainly sounds like a deal that would work – the winner would be spending the day there and utilising the other goodies on offer.

I would probably have to spend at least half the week there to feel I was getting bang for buck…lol

Northlakes offers just a golf course along with ideal practice areas and clubhouse which I feel is great apart from all the corporate days. Even then you can get on and the staff in the pro shop are fabulous people (especially Lee Hunt and Gary Cozier) unlike the 1st lot that were in there where everything was too much trouble for them.

I hope you continue to enjy your new club chrisal! Are you retired or similar?
